Actually, this sounds perfectly reasonable to those of us who still use the
furry critters.

I tried gopher://sallib.sals.edu in IE 3.02 and it worked.  I never tried one
with a port number.  Considering the problems I had with IE telnet, it doesn't
surprise me that gopher might have difficulties.

This may be unrelated, but in case it's of value to someone: the problem I had
was getting the proper form of the file name to link on our Web site.  If you
gopher to sallib.sals.edu and point at the "About Southern Adirondack" choice,
the URL which displays in the status bar is of a slightly different form that
what displays in the address bar if you actually go to that file.

I ended up using the form with the % signs and hex values in my link, which is
what you see if you go there with an actual gopher client and press the = key.

It works.  I'm not going to question it.
