gopher links for IE

I'm trying to put a like to a gopher file (on a sun with regular gopher
server) on our intranet (IIS). 

Using a form like gopher://host.domain:port/ I get a host invalid message
in IE 3.x and 4.0.

This works fine in netscape.

Any hints about how to do this?

(Oh, why would anyone want to do this? I have my reasons!)
