html table problem

I had a similar problem with a table I created.
The coding looked as if it should work, but wouldn't.
I finally used the "&nbsp" space code in front of and follwing my text
until my table cell expanded to the appropriate width.  It was a pain, but
it worked. It also ignored my "center" command and the &nbsp took care of
that as well.
My html looks horrible, but at least it works!
