24 hour library computer lab - physical layout and design

We are in the process of completing an architectural program for an
academic library addition that will contain a space purposely designed for
24 hour access. Since we currently provide via a web interface a
considerable amount of full text, this 24 hour space in the library will
be more a computer lab than anything else.
I would appreciate comments about the physical layout and design for a
computer lab in the library that is/will be open 24 hours. I'm
particularly looking for design suggestions or examples of physical
layouts that enhance security of the workstations and enable efficient
staffing patterns in a 24 hour access area. Since this will be a new
service for the library, what kinds of staffing are commonly used for
computer labs open 24 hours? Has there been a break from perhaps, what we
call a library assistant (I, II, or III) to a computer specialist (I or
II)?
Site visits are being considered. I would appreciate suggestions of
examples of library computer labs in the southeastern U.S. that we might
be able to visit. Of course, comments about architectural designs that
don't (didn't) work, could be just as helpful as comments on what works.
Please direct replies to me personally, since this may not be of wide
interest. I was hoping in choosing this listserv, I would be targeting
some of the right audience.
