Hosting search engines

There's been a lot of discussion on this listserv and many articles
published on the various attributes of search engines for the end user.

I've been looking, unsuccessfully, for information on issues relative to
hosting a search engine on your own web server. Issues such as obtaining
search engine software through purchase or freebies, installation concerns,
strengths/weaknesses, etc. are of interest for both NT and UNIX platforms.

Any ideas or experiences anyone would like to share?
