"304" Web log report

Web Server 101 question:

I'm curious about a Web log report code I don't understand.  We know 200
"Jes' fine", 404 "Not found", 401 "Unauthorized", etc.

But what is 304 "Not Modified"?

Haven't seen that anyplace obvious I've looked.  Such as our O'Reilly
Website software documentation.

Could anyone give me a short & clear explanation?
