Hello From Online Educator,
Here are the five Education Super Sites for the week of June 8, 1997 from
The Online Educator, creators of "Point, Click and Teach.".
1. HEALTH
Help your students gather important information about teen pregnancy via
the NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT TEEN PREGNANCY.
Teen pregnancy continues to be a hot-button topic across the country. This
developing Web site is devoted to reducing the incidence of teen pregnancy
in the U.S. by one-third by the year 2005. The site currently contains
information on how you can get your students and community involved in this
effort. Coming soon: Online resources for parents and teens. The National
Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is a completely private
(non-governmental), nonprofit, and nonpartisan effort led by a
distinguished National Board. The Board Chairman is Thomas Kean, President
of Drew University and former Governor of New Jersey. Isabel Sawhill,
Ph.D., serves as the Campaign's President.
2. LITERATURE
Teach writing and critical thinking skills while your students watch
television with the TV CRITIC PROJECT.
Who says watching television can't be educational? Turn your students onto
this fun project, designed by the Los Angeles Count Office of Education,
and you'll see how it can be done. This lesson plan not only will help
cover some essentials in writing and expression, it will help you teach
valuable media literacy concepts to your kids.
3. TOOLS FOR TEACHERS
Don't make costly technology errors. Turn to THE CALIFORNIA INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY CLEARINGHOUSE for help before you invest in classroom technology.
You've heard about some new classroom software, but it's expensive and you
really want to make sure it's good before you buy. You need the California
Instructional Technology Clearinghouse. The database maintained on this
site contains teacher evaluations of scores of products that have been
reviewed for use in California classrooms. If it gets good grades here, you
can use it with confidence in your school.
4. SCIENCE
Use your classroom computer to explore the human body with INNERBODY.COM.
Anotomy and biology can be tough subjects to teach, particularly if you
don't have easy access to a lab. With innerbody.com, you'll never have to
wait for the lab to open up again. This innovative site contains animations
that show the how various parts of the body function. You'll need a
Java-enabled browser to view these cool animations.
5. ARTS
Keep a pile of ready-made lesson plans on your hard drive, compliments of
TEACHERS HELPING TEACHERS.
Looking for a quick music lesson for your third-grade class? How about a
fine arts activity for your high school kids? You'll find a growing list of
teacher-tested lesson plans and activities at this awesome site, created by
Los Angeles middle-school teacher Scott Mandel. After you've gotten your
art fix, check out the offerings he has for other curriculum areas. This is
one URL you'll want to save.
