DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs file maintenance on Unix computer system.  Installs and 
maintains software on Unix system.  Manages Internet information 
services on Unix system.  Assists with the design of Web pages.  
Assesses and remedies security needs of Internet-accessible Unix 
hosts. 

WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Must 
be able to use a computer to access/input information.  Position 
requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 
pounds.  Must meet the requirements of the City of Houston Policy on 
the Operation and Use of a Vehicle by Employees. 

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS  
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management 
Information Systems, or a related field. 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 
Three (3) years experience required in data communications analysis 
and design, programming systems design and maintenance, operating 
systems software support, or a closely related field. 

PREFERENCES 
Knowledge of Solaris 2.x {Unix} operating system, CGI scripts, PERL,
TCP/IP, and HTML preferred.  Experience configuring and maintaining
Sendmail and primary DNS server.  Thorough knowledge of Unix and \
TCP/IP network security.  Minimum of one (1) year experience 
administering a Unix host on a TCP/IP network preferred. 

SALARY INFORMATION  
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the 
candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other 
employees in this classification.  The minimum to midpoint of 
this salary range is:  $29,874 - $41,054 Annually
