graphics formats

I didn't give complete info on a couple of statements I made.
I said that .jpg is smaller than .gif, which is true in most
cases. It is NOT always the case for line art, graphics with
lots of solid colors in them, etc. Yes, .gif supports
transparency (often nice) and animation (usually is
abominable, never good, IMHO). I still use .jpg whenever
possible, even if files a few bytes larger. In the big picture
that doesn't matter much if they're in the same ballpark.
For all the info on any of these, see Ency of Graphics File
Formats, 2nd ed. It includes a CDROM that will install on
mac, pc, u**x, and there are examples and other info galore.
There will be more than most of us ever care to know about
graphics formats, down to the bit by bit level. Great
reference source, but not bedtime reading for most sane
people. o-)
cheers
dan
