Thomas Dowling notes in passing:
>neither Netscape nor Microsoft manage HTTP connections and HTML rendering as
>fast as they should, and their current emphases don't suggest that they're
>working too hard on this.

Another interesting phenomenon is that the new version of HTTP, 1.1, that was
supposed to make the web much faster, is actually disasterously *slower* than
HTTP 1.0 unless implemented very carefully in both the client and the server
(server changes must include changes both to the HTTP server software and to
the underlying TCP stack). So browser speed also depends critically on the
details of the server that you are contacting. See:

Heidemann, J (1997). Performance interactions between P-HTTP and TCP
implementations. Computer Communication Review, 27 (2), p. 65-73.
