difference between types of telnets

"Plain" telnet usually emulates a DEC VT100 terminal when it connects to
a host. TN3270 emulates and IBM 3270 terminals. Mainframes usually
insist that you have a good working emulator of one of these terminals if
you run programs that use function keys or that try to draw on your
screen. Codes designed to communicate with a 3270 terminal cause
terrible problems on vt100 emulators, and vice versa. VAX & Unix
machines usually accept vt100; IBM mainframes like 3270, but can often
accept vt100.
