Managers in MARS (Machine-Assisted Reference Services) Discussion Group
The Ghost in the Machine: Dealing with Culture Conflicts
Sunday, 2/16/97, 4:30 - 5:30 pm
Loew's L'Enfant Plaza - Monet I, II
As information technology and reference services become more and more
interdependent, reference service managers have to deal with more and more
'culture conflicts'. Not only are there hereditary rivalries between
'teach them' and 'give them what they want', but it's librarians vs.
techies, touch vs. tech, computer nerds vs. librarians.
Cultural differences may affect every level of our services, from printing
citations right up to the organization of our workplace.
We will be discussing how reference professionals have worked with culture
differences, overcoming conflicts and making use of differences to provide
optimum reference services. Please come and share
your experiences with others!
