live demonstrations of various leading-edge Internet-based library
applications.
This session is co-sponsored by the Emerging Technologies Interest Group of
the Canadian Library Association
Moderator: Jane Beaumont, Consultant, Beaumont & Associates Inc.

1. Tools and Procedures For The Creation of Digital Libraries
Speakers: Bill Oldfield, Networked Information Research Associate,
University of Waterloo Library; Steve Sloan, Systems Librarian and Campus
Webmaster, University of New Brunswick

What is SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) and why is it
important for digital libraries? Learn what SGML is and how it can provide
answers for the access, delivery and preservation of digital library
resources. Also learn XML (Extensible Markup Language), an SGML derivative,
which could become the dominant markup language of the Web.
The session will also cover the practical aspects of work in an
electronic text centre including markup, imaging, indexing and filtering for
the World Wide Web. Live demonstrations will be based on the work at the
University of New Brunswick's Electronic Text Centre
(http://www.lib.unb.ca/Main/Texts.html).

2. COMPARING NETSCAPE AND INTERNET EXPLORER PUBLIC SECURITY FEATURES
Speaker: Su Cleyle, Systems Librarian, Memorial University of Newfoundland
This session will be full of "how to batten down the hatches" tips and
tricks for your public accessible web surfers or opacs. Browsers
to be highlighted: Netscape and Internet Explorer.

3. Java and ActiveX Applications and Issues for Libraries
Speaker: Art Rhyno, Systems Librarian, University of Windsor
What are Java and ActiveX technologies and how do they work? What are the
current/potential applications of Java and ActiveX in libraries? What are
the security issues associated with using Java and ActiveX?

4. Configuring Z39.50 Clients and Servers For Prime Time: Dirty Little
Secrets
Speaker: Slavko Manojlovich, Head, Library Systems Office, Memorial
University of Newfoundland
The Z39.50 standard enables libraries to provide one-stop access to a
variety of Internet-based resources (library catalogues, full-text
databases, etc.) using a single user interface. Unfortunately, an
understanding of Z39.50 alone is not enough to ensure that libraries will
be able to take advantage of the promise of Z39.50. This session will
provide attendees with a behind-the-scenes look at Z39.50 and practical
advice for configuring access to a variety of serves including
SilverPlatter ERL and OCLC FirstSearch.
