'License or perish?'
A Workshop on the Licensing of Electronic Resources
Ottawa, October 27-28, 1997
Purpose and Overview
Increasingly, information resources are available electronically.
In this exciting but uncertain environment, information providers who
need to protect their investments are turning to licenses to define
and control the use of their products. As licenses become standard
business practice for providing access to and use of electronic
information, we must pay attention to both the details and the
cumulative effect of these agreements on users, institutions, and the
process of scholarly communication. Library and information centre
managers are now faced with negotiating terms of use for each
electronic resource that satisfy both the information provider and
the user. In the realm of license negotiation, one can learn that a
clause was missed and we have agreed to restrictions that would be
unacceptable in either a print or digital environment.
This one and a half day workshop will provide participants with a
clear understanding of the complexities of the electronic license
environment, including:
- the legal aspects of licensing (definitions, authentication,
contract law, copyright and Intellectual Property Law as it relates
to electronic licenses)
- a detailed understanding of how to read and interpret a contract
- trends, developments and predictions in the international arena
- the opportunities for Canadian libraries.
