POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

TITLE: Senior Programmer/Analyst (#52999)

DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a highly motivated
individual to administer and support its AIX/Unix (RS/6000) systems in the
research and medical libraries. The candidate will also manage databases,
write programs to support applications, and implement advanced CGI/Perl/Java
scripting for its Web and Intranet. The successful candidate will work at
planning to integrate client/server systems, particularly the migration of
MVS databases to Unix. Other duties will include the management of daily
system operations with others in the automation team, and analyze system
performance. Occasional weekends and evening hours work required for systems
maintenance and databases updating. This position is in the classified staff
(non-facutly) line.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a service-orientation with the
ability to work in dynamic, quickly changing team environment. Familiarity
with AIX/Unix (RS/6000) administration, TCP/IP networks, and LANs. Advanced
knowledge and significant experience with AIX/Unix, C/C++, Perl. Ability to
write, maintain, and document code. Good communication and analytical
skills. Experience in library automation preferred. College degree in
computer science or information systems highly desirable. Experience working
in a culturally diverse environment highly preferred.

ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University is a publicly-supported urban,
research university in Richmond, Virginia. It serves 20,000 students on both
the academic campus and at
the Medical College of Virginia. The library has close to 1.2 million.
Systems in operation: NOTIS with locally mounted databases in both a
maifiame and client-server environment, 3 AIX (RS/600) and 1 NT servers,
OCLC, Novell, Logicraft CDserver networking software, over 250
microcomputers, and a variety of software packages and CD-ROM products. The
librarary operates its own WWW home page
(http://exlibris.uls.vcu.edu/library), participates in a statewide
networking consortium for shared access to electronic resources, offers a
variety of remote access databases, and has Open Text's software for
fulltext management. The library is participating in University's
implementation of the IBM Digital Library project
(http://www.vcu.edu/vcu/oit/dl/index.html) for management and distribution
of electronic text and other electronic objects.

SALARY: $36,535-57,040. Benefits include 7-21 days leave, choice of health
plans (including HMOS and dental plans), choice of retirement and annuity
plans (including TIAA/CREF); remuneration for University course work; and
paid life insurance.
