Hello everyone.
Many thanks to those who responded to my question about magazine back
issue distributors on the web. Below are the responses. More than one
person recommended the USBE and READMORE sites. I have forwarded all of
the information to our acquisitions person, who will be checking out the
sites.

Julie: Your colleague may be interested in these:
Alfred Jaeger is a back issues dealer, covering all, or at least many,
subject areas. Jaeger's URL is http://www.ajaeger.com/
There is a site that provides links to several exchange services. I'm not
sure if this is what you mean by "distributors," but the site might be
worth a look: http://www.uvm.edu/~bmaclenn/backexch.htm
I'm not sure that USBE's site (USBE being the Universal Serials and Book
Exchange) is included in the above set of links. Just in case, it's URL
is http://www.usbe.com/

Saw your posting to Web4Lib on this subject.
Have you looked at the Readmore site? www.readmore.com
They sponsor a service called Backserv. It's sort of a bulletin board, or
matching service for those with magazine surplus & those needing back
issues.

USBE (perhaps the major back issue supplier in the country) has a Web
site at www.usbe.com. It includes their entire back issues shelf list of
titles available to member libraries.

Julie,
Your request for an elctronic source for back issues was passed on
to me by our Government Docs Librarian. I'm on a Listserv which is
not a distributor, but rather, is a duplicate exchange among
libraries. I have found it quite helpful in acquiring back issues
very cheaply (usually just for the cost of postage). People advertise
their duplicates, which anyone may then request. You may also
advertise your "wants".
To subscribe to this list, send a message to:
listserv at sun.readmore.com
with no subject line that reads:
subscribe backserv firstname lastname
If you want more information before subscribing, you can contact
the list administrator: Marilyn Geller, Email:mgeller at readmore.com
Phone:(617)484-7379.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Dear Ms. Castelluzzo:
We have received your request for comprehensive back issue vendors on the
Web. I am not sure if your library is in contact with Marilyn Ng at the
Doe library as they have been utilizing our back issue services for quite
some time.
Please allow me to introduce myself, Glenn Jaeger. I currently manage
Faxon's back order department called Faxon Quest. The Faxon Company has
decided to close this division in order to concentrate on their core
subscription business.
In response to this, we have formed Absolute Backorder Service. My
partner Tracey Clarke (V.P.) and myself (President) have been building an
automated inventory of current material. Our philosophy is that over 80
percent of domestic requests are for the past 2-3 years. We will continue
to concentrate on stocking titles of this time period.
Our plans are to build a Web Page by mid-1997 that offers more than what
is currently available. Right now, you can access several dealer's Web
Pages for general listings they may (or may not) have. Our offerings are
issue and volume specific for what is readily available from inventory.
Additionally, we buy and sell with many of the out-of-print back volume
vendors around the world. My eighteen plus years in the business has
established preferred relationships with most.
Lastly, we also inquire with the publishers for the fulfillment of your
requirements.
This comprehensive service saves you countless hours of staff time in
locating and acquiring back volumes and issues. Absolute searches,
orders, receives, inspects, claims, consolidates and ships the required
back volume and issue material.
Here are the particulars on our organization:
Absolute Backorder Service, Inc.
P.O. Box 336
Foxborough, MA 02035-0336
TEL# 508-543-1950
FAX# 508-543-2878
Emails (available in two weeks): jaeger at absolute-inc.com
clarke at absolute-inc.com
Our automated inventory will be available on diskette around mid-October.
Please send your requests to the above address.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
Glenn Jaeger
