The following position is available at the Frances Loeb Library of Harvard
University's Graduate School of Design:
TITLE: Information Services Specialist
GRADE/JOB FAMILY: 56/Frances Loeb Library
REPORTS TO: Associate Dean for Information Services and Loeb Librarian
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- provides support to Library staff for all matters concerning application of
computers and information technology to the needs of the Frances Loeb Library,
including access to HOLLIS (Harvard's online catalog), HOLLIS Plus (Harvard's
internet gateway), other University and Internet services and systems, and
databases such as CD-ROMs, subscription services and others;
- works with the Visual Resources Librarian and other Library and Computer
Resources staff to assist in the design and implementation of a relational
image database, providing technical and programming support for the image
database and its linked data files, as well as for on-going image projects in
support of the GSD's curriculum;
- works with the Design School's Computer Resources Group to ensure smooth
delivery of information resources over the network to students, faculty and
staff;
- serves as local webmaster for Loeb Library, responsible for coordinating the
growth and development of the Library's WWW site and resources;
- advises the Associate Dean of Information Services and the Director of the
Computer Resources Group on the growth and development of the GSD's computer
infrastructure and network, especially in the areas of appropriate information
services technology and computer hardware/software systems.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to work
patiently and efficiently to support end-users with a wide range of
experience; must be able to problem-solve efficiently. Strong team player
with the ability to be flexible to meet demands that arise in a day-to-day
busy technology-dependent environment.
BA degree. 3-5 years experience in a similar environment. Knowledge of
operating systems, protocols, installation, configuration, troubleshooting
for: Windows NT (server), UNIX (pref. Linux and SunOS/Solaris), Windows 95,
Windows 3.1x, TCP/IP, DOS. Also desireable: Windows NT Workstation, Netware
3.x, Macintosh, Samba, SMB (Windows NT/95/WfWg) networking. Knowledge of
applications as follows: Netscape browsers; NOTIS/HOLLIS (Harvard OnLine
Library System; OCLC Passport software; Microsoft Word, Excel, Access; Wilson,
SilverPlatter/CD-ROM searching software; POP clients; Telnet, FTP clients.
Knowledge of library workflows, procedures, etc., knowledge of current trends
in client-server library systems all extremely useful. Familiarity with HTML,
with either Perl, Java, shell-scripting, C, ActiveX or Visual Basic helpful.
Knowledge of hardware management and initial troubleshooting necessary.
