Here is the very prompt , well reasoned, and very understandable response
from CNN. They want us to link to their site in a big way!!!!

Bill,

Here's the scoop on using the CNN or CNN Interactive logo on library sites.

CNN Interactive does not allow anyone to reproduce our logo or graphic on their
site unless we have a special business relationship with them. This is because
we need to keep a very close watch on how our brand name and likeness is
utilized. I'm sure you can appreciate why we are nervous about letting people
duplicate our logo without us being able to control what they do with it --
especially on a medium like the web.

Therefore, we've decided not to give permission to anyone (unless it's a
business partner) to use our logos on their site. People who use the logo
anyways are subject to legal action from our lawyers, who _will_ take action.

That being said, I encourage you to provide a link to our site for your users.
It is perfectly legal for you to have a text link to us, and we've love it if
you'd provide one. In fact, it you want to design and create your own custom
graphic to use as a graphic link to CNN.com, that would be great too. Just
don't use the CNN logo as a part of it and you'll be OK.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clear all of this up. I would
appreciate it if you would post this response on the Web4Lib group, because we
don't want to scare anyone away from linking to us. We want as many people
coming to visit us as possible!

If you have any other questions about our site, please don't hesitate to send me
an e-mail.

Yours,

Jordan Goldman
Marketing Coordinator
CNN Interactive

PS -- Links should go to "http://CNN.com". You could also link to our other two
sites: AllPolitics (http://AllPolitics.com), which a joint venture with TIME
magazine, or CNNfn (http://CNNfn.com).

Topic: CNN and pointers to it from other pages.

There has been a very lengthy discussion on the library
discussion list Web4Lib about an incicdent that I'm
not even sure happened. One librarian stated that they
were required by CNN to remove any links to the CNN webpages.
I would like to know what CNN's position is on this issue?
Can I make a link to WWW.CNN.COM on pur library pages
without out fear of restribution from CNN?
