HOT TOPIC ROUNDTABLES
CALL for PARTICIPATION
Invitation to Participate:
The LITA/LAMA National Conference Program Committee invites you to
submit proposals for Hot Topic Roundtable discussions. The table talk
program format affords the opportunity for conference attendees to
discuss late breaking and current "hot topics" in an informal small group
setting.
The focus of Hot Topic Roundtables will correspond to the theme of the
LITA/LAMA National Conference which is leadership and technology for
the Information Age. Each table talk must have a discussion facilitator
whose role is to introduce and moderate the hot topic for discussion,
and to encourage lively discussion among the participants.
Three no-conflict time slots have been reserved during the conference
for the Hot Topic Roundtables. These time periods are:
* Monday, October 14, 1996 - 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
* Tuesday, October 15, 1996 - 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
* Tuesday, October 15, 1996 - 4:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA) and the
Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), divisions
of the American Library Association (ALA), and the ALA Office of
Information Technology Policy Have jointly developed and exciting
national conference scheduled for October 1996 in Pittsburgh. This
conference affords a unique opportunity to participate in an event that
will bring together for the first time a blend of technologists and
leadership from two ALA divisions. The conference will serve as a
convergence point for showcasing the latest developments and as a
forum for engaging in critical thinking concerning the future of library
service.
"TRANSFORMING LIBRARIES: LEADERSHIP AND TECHNOLOGY FOR
THE INFORMATION AGE" is the conference theme. Conference
programming will focus upon four principal perspectives.
* The STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENT in which information services face
a challenging environment for continuous change. Planners must
look to innovative approaches to organization, management, and
the delivery of services in order to realize the greatest
potential use of information technology.
* The OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT in which the day to day service
environment is increasingly reliant upon sophisticated and
complex technologies. Selecting and sustaining these technologies
have created a new context for the management and delivery
of services.
* SOCIETAL ROLES in which the nature of service and who is served
are changing as a result of new technological capabilities. As
new services evolve, organizational structures and human
resources requirements are undergoing significant and often
radical change.
* COLLABORATION in which partnering is a major factor in
the delivery of services based upon information technology.
Users, vendors, and the providers of information services
are working together in new ways to develop and deliver services.
The Program Committee is seeking to develop a conference which is a
meaningful learning experience through enhancing the ability of each
conference attendee to:
* Envision the future of information services
* Implement new service concepts and strategies
* Facilitate change processes
* Manage and influence the evolution of technology applications
