David Siegel and his book certainly have provoked some controversy
on this list. For those interested in examples (beyond his Killer Sites
book) that he feels exemplify good or innovative web design, check the
other site he maintains:
http://www.highfive.com
This site displays a winning site each Wednesday that is chosen on the
basis of design, conception, execution, and content. It also includes
an archive of descriptions and links to past winners. Past winners
have included:
National Geographic Online, Carnegie Hall, Counting Crows, Suck and others
back to May 1995.
While they obviously won't all appeal to anyone, it demonstrates
many aspects of design that work for one reason or another. This is such
a new medium, many web designers are exploring how to attract an audience
and guide them thru a virtual space. Even though libraries are primarily
information providers, we can learn some lessons from these pages. That's
my two cents.
