AOL recently hired one of our students as one of their webmasters. He
probably was hired as much for his visual design ability than his information
organization skills. Both are very good. They were also considering
another student but it looks like she'll take another position developing
networking information resources. She also has a strong visual design
background. I've also been called by AOL and a couple of other pretty big
info orgs to see if I have other students like these folks but I don't
they are getting jobs pretty easily. Each year I try to track down
incoming students with visual design backgrounds to make sure they
realize that the combination of visual skills and an MLS/MIS with a good
dose of programming thrown in is an incredibly marketable skill. Nothing
is hotter than a librarian/info designer who can draw, perl and
categorize at the same time.
