HyperLib is a three year collaborative project between
Loughborough University and the University of Antwerp which
will conclude in December 1995. It is part-funded by the
CEC Libraries Programme (CEC Project LIB-HYPERLIB/3-1015).
The project is dedicated to improving access to existing
on-line services of a university library, thereby
enhancing the library's utility to its users. This objective
has been achieved through the design, implementation and
evaluation of user interfaces which are both powerful and
easy to use. Where appropriate the project has exploited
advanced technological applications such as SGML, Hypertext
and the WWW to provide innovative methods of information
presentation and retrieval. In order to ensure that the
resulting interfaces support a broad spectrum of library users,
the project has adopted a Human Factors design methodology,
i.e. that of User Centered Design. The project focusses on
implementations such as OPACs, electronic guides for end users,
manuals for library staff and navigation tools for
subject classification. The HyperLib toolkit has been
embedded in the WWW services of the University of Antwerp
http://www.ua.ac.be/ualib.html] and is portable
to other library software environments.

The closing meeting will give an overview of the project
(human factors design and technical approach) and provide
demonstration of the various HyperLib products. Keynote
speaker will be Dr. J. De Vuyst (NBBI-The Netherlands)
with a presentation titled Towards the Information Society.
