For a comprehensible treatment, not too old, take a look at:
  Alberico, Ralph, and Mary Micco.  Expert systems for reference and 
information retrieval.  Meckler, 1990.

An easy way to get current info...hey, we're on the Web!  Search "expert
system" on some of the Web search engines.  I tried the simple (singular) 
form search on MetaCrawler and got a BUNCH of good hits in about 20 seconds.
