What's wrong with virtual reference?

There's been a discussion on the DIG_REF list today about the following
Op-Ed piece:

I know that there are a number of Web4Lib folks who are interested in this
topic, but who are not on the DIG_REF list. I'm curious to hear what you all
think of this article.
