POSITION  ANNOUNCEMENT:

The Suburban Library System in suburban Chicago has an opening for a new
position, Internet Development Specialist.  The beginning salary range is
$27,205 - $34,006, dependent upon qualifications.  Applications will be

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Internet Development Specialist
Exempt - Grade 107
Suburban Library System
Information Technology Services Dept.

DEFINITION:

Position responsible for the implementation and maintenance of SLS
Internet services for member libraries.  No supervision of others is
required, but may exercise leadership as required. 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:

Under general administration of the Information Technology Services
Director, serves as staff specialist for the implementation and
maintenance of Internet tools for SLS, including the World Wide Web server
services and mail list services.  Develops and manages user documentation
for SLS Internet services and assists in providing user support.  Consults
and works with the SWAN Service staff.  Consults with programmers and
graphic artists as needed to develop SLS Internet services.  May require
extended hours. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

In consultation with SLS staff and committees, develops and supports
maintenance of the SLS Gopher and World Wide Web home pages for SLS staff. 
Identifies or develops courseware for HTML and related training programs. 
Consults with member libraries about the development, loading, and
maintenance of their own home pages.  Establishes, manages, and monitors
SLS mail lists in response to the needs of the SLS membership.  Responds
to questions from member library staff regarding Internet and World Wide
Web services.  Attends conferences and workshops to maintain current
awareness of trends in Internet services and software. Serves as a
resource person for SLS Internet groups and Information Technology
committees. 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience with Internet tools,
including mail lists, Gopher, the World Wide Web, graphical browsers, and
HTML, including HTML authoring software.  Experience developing and
writing automation documentation.  Demonstrated ability to communicate
technical ideas and plans both verbally and in writing to non-technical
clientele in a helpful and friendly manner. Must have the physical ability
and manual dexterity to input data on a keyboard and read computer screens
and other print materials.  Must have access to a vehicle for use on SLS
business in performance of position requirements or hold a driver’ license
valid in Illinois.  In addition, working knowledge of Windows 3.1,
Microsoft Office suite software, including Word and PowerPoint desirable. 
Background in graphic arts and page layout desirable. 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

  Bachelor’s Degree
  Two years’ work experience in a network environment
  One year’s experience with HTML
