Message-ID: Dear Subscribers, The University of Notre Dame, through the very kind broker Eric Lease Morgan, has hosted Web4Lib for a number of years. I am very, very grateful for their support. I have now been informed that all UND lists will be migrated to Google Groups or shutdown. Thus, I must decide to either migrate the list to Google Groups, find another hosting situation, or shut it down. I am considering whether to shut it down. I want to make it clear that although the question has been called due to the need to make a hosting decision, I do not feel in any way that the University of Notre Dame is shutting us down -- they are not. However, I think is a good time to consider whether the list is worth continuing. Although I feel like a list that is for discussing web issues in a library context is still potentially important, the list archive proves otherwise. What we find are a litany of announcements but very little actual discussion. So we must decide, as a group, what to do. Does this list provide value? Do you want it to continue in Google Groups? To find out what you want, I've created a poll: http://bit.ly/1T3ANjw Please let me know what you all think. Even traffic like announcements is useful and having a platform allows for other uses in the future. I am also on the ALCTS list and I do not remember seeing much action on that list but now they have started to have two day unconferences on a topic using the list and its so interesting to learn and participate on topics you may or may not be interested. Two recent ones of interest to me were on retirement and middle management. These are topics that could have easily been on another list buit is was this forum were librarians came together for two days (sort of a serendipitous community discussion among friends ). The informal nature of the topic and list, allowed for a rich dialog and I got quite a bit from both of these topics. For a more recent topic that was not of interest, I just deleted the entries. So, lists can have ebbs and flows and as long as it meets a need for some, it is worth keeping. But, its always good to take a look once in awhile to see if a topic is still relevant -- should be broader, more encompassing, narrower, or disappear. In this case, I definitely vote to have the list continue, especially since there is an offer of a new home! Where are the posts on social networks? posts by public librarians? on the Internet of Tbings? on the mobile web? etc. And in an era of a global digital library, why is there also a UK list, an IFLA list? That's just some food for thought. But, I do think it is important to have a place where, as has happened with ALCTS, that librarians can start an unconference-like two day discussion on a topic of interest. So, much of it is in the hands of the community. But, without a space, and I guess there is much more comfort with listservs, these kinds of options would not be possible. A mixed bag as always in a disruptive environment. I prefer the more inclusive sounding list name ?Web4Lib? but I find that if I post questions on Code4Lib or ERIL-L I get more responses. I?m not sure why listserv traffic seems to ebb and flow, but it definitely seems down here. As such it candidates as an event fostering collaboration between (i) Library and information scientists working on the identification of new publication paradigms; (ii) ICT scientists involved in the definition of new technical solutions to these issues; (iii) scientists/researchers who actually conduct the research and demand tools and practices for Open Science. The expected results are advancements in the definition of the next generation scientific communication ecosystem, where scientists can publish research results (including the scientific article, the data, the methods, and any ?alternative? product that may be relevant to the conducted research) in order to enable reproducibility (effective reuse and decrease of cost of science) and rely on novel scientific reward practices. ###### Workshop topics ###### The topics of this workshop are of interest to, but not limited to, the following research avenues: * Classification (models and ontologies), description (e.g. metadata), identity management of products of science different from the traditional article; * Representing, exchanging, sharing, assessing (peer-reviewing), depositing, preserving products different from the traditional article * Publishing workflows for products different from the traditional article, e.g. submission, review, scientific reward (e.g. software publishing, research data publishing) * Interlinking and contextualization of products: mining techniques, LOD, data models, relationships (citation, versioning) between research results, etc. * Findability of products of science: indexing, searching, browsing challenges; * Controlled access to products of science (e.g. anonymization, role-driven views) * ?Packaging research results?: identification, representation, description (metadata), deposition, preservation, evaluation, and interoperability of ?research results packages? (e.g. Research Objects, Elsevier?s ?article of the future?, executable papers, RMap) * Systems, tools, paradigms, publishing workflows towards favouring repetition, replication, reproduction, or re-use of science. ###### Paper Submission ###### Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers. Submitted manuscripts will have to be in the range of 4000-5000 words and edited with OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word, following the "Matters of style" section in the author guidelines for D-Lib Magazine. Papers submitted to the workshop will undergo a single-blind peer-review process by Program Committee members. Accepted papers will be published as a special issue of the D-Lib Magazine journal, in the first Quarter of 2017. To be published on the proceedings, accepted contributions should be revised according to the reviews and consider the feedback from the workshop. Moreover, at least one author is required to register and present the paper at the workshop. ###### Submission System ###### Research papers must be submitted via the workshop submission system, available at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=repscience2016 ###### Important dates ###### Research paper submission: July 4th, 2016 - 23:59 CET Notification of acceptance: August 1st, 2016 Revised paper re-submission: after workshop date, to be agreed with D-Lib Magazine Workshop day: September 9th, 2016 ###### Workshop Organisers ###### - Amir Aryani, Australian National Data Service, Australia - Oscar Corcho, Universidad Polit?cnica de Madrid, Spain - Paolo Manghi, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, ISTI), Italy - Jochen Schirrwagen, Bielefeld University Library, Germany ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2016-05-10 From primarydat at AOL.COM Tue May 10 10:29:33 2016 From: primarydat at AOL.COM (James Moses) Date: Tue, 10 May 2016 10:29:33 -0400 Subject: Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Institutional Digital Repositories, 2016 Edition, ISBN 978-157440-3862 Message-ID: Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Institutional Digital Repositories, 2016 Edition, ISBN 978-157440-3862 The 150+ page study presents detailed data on budgets and spending, man hours devoted to the repository, revenue generation and fees, access policies & content viewing restrictions, levels of cooperation from faculty and parent institution staff, marketing, cataloging, downloads and other user statistics, ePublishing & peer review efforts, and much else of interest to library staff and suppliers interested in repositories, content distribution & publishing and open access. The study presents data and commentary from 37 institutional digital repositories worldwide including but not limited to: Johns Hopkins University, the Association of European Research Libraries, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, OECD, Rutgers University, University College Dublin, Iowa State University, Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, Oregon State University, the World Bank, the University of Seville, Qatar University, Montana State University, Utrecht University and the University of Canterbury, among others. Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: ? The digital repositories in the sample were operational for 5.18 years on average, with a maximum of 16 years. ? About 86% of repositories sampled do not charge users a fee in any form; none of those charging a fee were educational institutions. ? Level 1 or Level 2 Carnegie Class Research Universities in the sample (and their equivalents outside of the USA) had a mean of 1,104,140 downloads in the past year. ? For US-based repositories, 27% of downloads came from countries other than the US itself or Canada. ? In case of BA or MA Granting Institutions less than half (43%) of the repository downloads come outside the parent institution, while for other types of educational institutions at least 76% on average comes from outside the parent institution. ? Non-US repositories sampled experienced higher increases ($16,562 on average) in their repository budgets than their US counterparts ($5,006). Presentations from the workshop may be encouraged to be submitted as extended papers for a peer reviewed journal publication. *Themes for the 16th NKOS workshop will be:* (1) KOS Alignment. KOS alignment or terminology mapping plays a vital role in NKOS for many years. This year we want to sort out the needs (use cases) of KOS alignments in the new environment of Linked Open Data. We plan to collect methodologies, best practices, guidelines and tools. This includes manual and automatic alignments. (2) KOS Linked Open Data. Recent years have seen an increasing trend to publication of KOS as Linked Data vocabularies. We need discussion of practical initiatives to link between congruent vocabularies and provide effective web services and APIs so that applications can build upon them. (3) Subject metadata for research data. With increasing recognition of the need to manage research data as part of universities research output, subject metadata represent particular challenges that need to be addressed from theoretical as well as practical perspectives. We plan to discuss existing issues, especially in terms of interoperability across disciplines as well as applications, and strive towards establishment of best practices and guidelines. *Further timely presentations/demonstrations will be selected from the following topics in the CfP:* (4) KOS-based recommender systems. The suggestion of the right meaningful concepts is a mission critical phase for searchers in modern DL. (5) Meaningful Concept Display and Meaningful Visualization of KOS. (6) Standards developments. (7) Evaluation of KOS-based systems ? methods and practical experience. *KOS applications are a regular and important part of NKOS workshops. Example topics include:* (8) KOS in e-Research metadata contexts - intersection between research data, KOS, Semantic web. (9) Social tagging. What is the role of social tagging and informal knowledge structures versus established KOS? (How) can tagging be guided and informed by KOS? (10) Users interaction with KOS in the online environment. (11) KOS and learning. What is required to use KOS effectively to convey meaning, to assist users to express their information needs to assist in sense making and learning? (12) Multilingual and Interdisciplinary KOS applications and tools. (13) Specific domains, such as environmental, medical, new application contexts, etc. More information on the workshop can be found under https://at-web1.comp.glam.ac.uk/pages/research/hypermedia/nkos/nkos2016-dc/call-for-papers.html We hope to see you in Copenhagen, Denmark.
