Database Support Specialist, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences / Margaret Herrick Library

Reports to: Head of Library Systems
Provide technical expertise, day-to-day administration, and broad support for traditional and emerging library software solutions and standards. The database support specialist uses a variety of technologies, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to provide the best possible experience for library patrons and staff as they seek, access, and maintain the information in our library systems. The job includes first-line support as well as maintenance and implementation in a broad range of systems that currently includes Ex Libris Voyager, Inmagic DB/Textworks, Drupal, WordPress, and a digital asset management system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Maintain and support databases, search forms, edit forms, and reports for desktop and Web use, using database software and coding in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML and XSLT.

·         Ensure usability, efficiency, and organization of data structures.

·         Troubleshoot and resolve database performance and display issues; follow up with vendor support staff when necessary.

·         Provide training and documentation for database users.

·         Migrate data between systems.

·         Monitor and manage periodic updates of online databases.

·         Interface with vendor support staff and hosting company staff.

·         Support a diverse community of users with a wide range of computer skill levels.

Position Requirements

·         Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library and Information Science preferred.

·         2-4 years experience working with database systems in a library or archive.

·         Experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

·         Experience with XML and XSLT.

·         High level of comfort with learning new software tools.

·         Familiarity with library online public access catalog software.

·         Ability to review and interpret technical information and translate for a less-technical audience.

·         Strong problem solving skills.

·         Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills.

·         Ability to multi-task and work independently.

·         Position requires prolonged computer use.
