The report helps its readers to answer questions such as: What role is the library playing in the development of online courses? Does the library assist in content development and if so to what extent? Does the library play a role in the licensing of copyright videos and other content and what role exactly? How much is being spent on these resources? What resources in terms of manpower and budgets are libraries committing to distance/blended learning students? How are colleges serving students in MOOCS? Our concern was very much that people would try to use LibGuides for everything, rather than using our blog system and library website for non-guide content. The class starts October 18th and sign up is at http://www.artmuseums.com/graphicdesign.htm or contact art259 at hotmail.com crafts at artmuseums.com Graphic Design for Librarians Online Workshop for Librarians and Staff (No Prior Art Background Required) Fun, Relaxed, Informative! Recommended by Librarians. Enroll today for the October 18th workshop. Mary wants parents to know about her Mom and Me reading program in her neighborhood library. She also likes to have visuals on hand when she presents at the department meetings. Todd has been asked to create a library guide for patrons to use when librarians are not available. He also is responsible for making the informational signage for general patrons. Youth Service Librarian, Sandy has a large group of teens who rely on blogs to gather their information about new books, craft programs, and clubs. Her job is also to create wall displays and other art for the teen corner. You have decided on a general theme for your Summer Reading Program but you want to carry the idea over to announcements, flyers, posters, bookmark incentives, and the bulletin board. Librarians are often asked to communicate or speak a visual language. The Graphic Design for Librarians class gives you the rules and tools for making that challenge not only possible but fun. It is designed for you specifically. The four week class gives you an opportunity to network and share ideas with others who are actively engaged in what you are doing. No prior art experience is needed or required to learn simple guidelines for making those graphic design tasks easier and more effective-no matter the project. Ignite your creative spark while learning basic skills needed to produce practical projects with the hardware and software you have already. What are librarians who have taken the workshops saying about the class? I found the section on fonts particularly informative. . .The information on fonts was most helpful. I learned that I need to be more aware of font, color, and placement. I liked the guidance and direction that was given to us for this project, but I especially loved how you let us use our own creativity for the project. So much fun! It really does help to see how others lay things out and what the possibilities are not just for posters, but for calendars, business cards, letters, and brochures. All of these are things that I have been called on to create at some point or another. The links to the templates and the link to the free graphic design software was particularly helpful. Overall, the visual examples and the links to resources have been the most helpful to me. The exercise of creating a flyer from scratch was eye-opening and enjoyable. . . The video clips were clear and informative. I have enjoyed the class and have learned quite a bit. I have already started using what I learned in creating at least a 1/2 doz new flyers for our programs during the last few weeks! What is so satisfying is that people are noticing that the flyers are a lot more interesting to look at and I have gotten several compliments on them (yeah!) Learn art fundamentals that will help you create effective design projects. Through illustrated lectures, hands-on assignments, and discussion groups you will explore basic principle and design elements, attention grabbers, and tips for creating the layout, font, and content techniques you want to project. Week 1-The first week you will network with others and share your most successful projects. You will also learn how to ?read? art designs by exploring the elements of composition and principles of design. Selecting materials, supplies, and software that you may want or need will be presented. The variety of projects that a librarian may want to create using graphic design techniques will be addressed. Week 2-The second week will combine the techniques that you learned in the first class and then merge them with more tools for creating effective designs. Specific projects such as posters, flyers, signage, displays, and other basic graphic design tasks will be created and critiqued. The importance of Font will be included in this second class. Week 3-We will look at the rules of Layout and White Space in Week 3. Brochures, newsletters, guidebooks, and other more challenging projects will be analyzed and reviewed. Week 4-Content and themes come together in Week 4 as we explore electronic design. We will look at the good and the ugly as we learn how to create aesthetically pleasing websites, blogs, and other internet project designs. In fact, we learned quite a bit from LG1 which informed out current guidelines for LG2. You've probably been inundated with guidelines by now, but I would add the following to the conversation: I think its very common to have different cultures in an organization that view web content differently. It became a chief concern of the LG2 Project to establish an understanding that certain parties should have authority over certain decisions by virtue of their professional focus. For example, Library Instruction should have ultimate say over pedagogy (guidelines for guides), but Digital Services should over Info Architecture/Usability and Tech Services should over organizing the resources. I think we all need to be better at learning to lean on the expertise around us and not think any single person knows it all. Well, anyone except Neil deGrasse Tyson.... To illustrate this, I've noticed that most librarians still don't think in terms of responsive design and so their guides are often designed with full-screen users in mind. Because of this issue, we enshrined the concept of simple, linear narratives within our guide creation guidelines and locked-down templates to keep people from missing this critical usability issue with a responsive site. At the same time, we allowed the subject expert total freedom in terms of how many pages they create and how they label/organize those pages. Before that I was basically a UX specialist for 8 years. One part of my new duties is to help get DSpace running, customized, and filled. We have been trying off and on since April and are having an awful time on all counts. This is really my introduction to working with anything command-line or any coding past HTML, CSS, and very basic PHP. What I really need is a super-easy breakdown of DSpace, or someone who can help me answer questions in a very simple manner. (I promise I'm not dumb - this is just new to me and until I have that "eureka" moment I need a little help.) Does anyone know if such a resource exists? I'm trying to work with the official documentation and post questions on the mailing list and StackOverflow, but our timeframe is very tight and my comprehension level is...not very high right now. Googling my issues is problematic at best. We're running DSpace locally in a Windows environment. I'm able to make changes and successfully rebuild, but when I try to update ant the site 404s. I can go into more detail with anyone who thinks they can help. Any insight will be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Julie D. Fast-forward 4 years, and we have gone through a massive redesign of the website, with a renewed focus on the website as a tool for resource exposure and library information. We also stipulated very specific design rules based on our own usability research, and the available literature - we do not feel that design and navigation have anything to do with intellectual freedom, and are furthermore of such importance in terms of providing the user with a consistent experience that we really needed to specify navigation, layout and what a page should consist of in terms elements, blocks, etc. We do have a single librarian who manages and admins libguides, and that is very helpful when it comes to compliance and interaction with the rest of the librarians for compliance and enforcing standards / best practices. Fast-forward 4 years, and we have gone through a massive redesign of the website, with a renewed focus on the website as a tool for resource exposure and library information. All 'intellectual' content has been moved to either wordpress blogs or into libguides 2.0, creating a distinct separation between website content (resources, research, library info), libguides content (class and subject support), and blog usage (kitchen sink, news, personal, etc.). Non-Members: Register by November 2nd for Early Bird Pricing Libraries have been working with ebooks for a number of years now and in a variety of ways. The landscape, however, has continued to shift - sometimes under our feet. It is time to take a day to assess where we are. Some libraries work within the limitations of existing services, providing exceptional value for their communities. Others create their own services from scratch, while still others take advantage of both scenarios. What are you doing to enhance your ebook services? Have you studied your statistics, run user or usability studies, tried an assortment of marketing techniques? Have you created partnerships or worked with specific groups? Gone "where no library has gone before?" Your experiences could help other libraries. Sessions include topics to tempt public, academic, and special libraries: * Two sessions on Demand-Driven Acquisition - one a 4-year evaluation of use at their library and the other assessing the short-term DDA model. * How a library worked with a vendor to present sessions to other libraries, but had the unintended consequence of nudging the vendor to make changes to their interface. * Thoughts from a public librarian on subscription-based ebook platforms like Freading/Freegal, Hoopla, and Total Boox. * How two library with space limitations have used ebooks as a way to keep pace with the needs of their communities. * Description and evaluation of a public library that provides one-on-one ebook assistance for their patrons. * New way to enliven the classics through the 50 x 50 campaign. * Overview and demonstration of Amigos' new ebook project, the Amigos eShelf Service, which will be available to all libraries in November. Online conference sessions will run 45 minutes each throughout the day. Recordings will be available to attendees after the conference. All Librarians, Teachers, Volunteers, Staff, and Library Science Students Welcome. It has been completed by librarians from across the US and internationally. You will network with other librarians and start your makerspace plan. Take the class as a group or individual. The following sampling of recent comments from the September 2015 class: Maker space programming is a simple way to reinvent your library space into a fun learning environment for your patrons and community. Programs that are geared to smaller crowds work well in our indoor physical space but larger programs and projects work well on our large lawn. I like knowing that there doesn't have to be a product, but rather the process of learning is your gift. Thank you! The most helpful information I gleaned here are the programming ideas that can be discovered through the lecture links. I know I can be organized, but coming up with ideas is not so easy. Looking at what others have done can help my library get this maker program up and running. I'm glad to say that I'm feeling very inspired by this class. I'm also glad to say that my department head is excited, too, so I think, by January, we'll have something going. I've gained some new ideas for programs and activities that I hope to incorporate in our new space. I've also learned more about what safety equipment we should have on site, and what safety rules and regulations we should post. I think there can be a lot of value in Maker Spaces in the School Library. It will be a little different to implement and manage than in a public library setting, but still very feasible! I intend to try one different project per term this school year, starting with the 3D pens (2nd term), origami (3rd term) and making a chair for the Media Center out of cardboard boxes (4th term). This class helped me to clarify my vision so that I could successfully implement a plan. There is a kind of revolution going on in library programming. Whether you call them Maker, Community, or Hacker Spaces, these DIY working areas in libraries have become a popular meeting and creative program space for patrons of all ages. Much more than a make it and take it the Maker Space provides the tools, instruction, and company of others that inspire and enable creative making. The programs are most popular with teens and young adults but can include all ages. Lego programming for young children for example is a popular activity for this age group Maker. Maker program participant activities range from learning Fine Art Painting skills to creating Ancient Astronomical Instruments and everything in between. Co-creaters and subject experts may collaborate to build robots, a new business, 3-D graphic T-shirts, or bicycle sculpture. It's not just primarily physical doing that happens at the Maker Space. Teens Maker workshops can include poetry making, writing workshops, language coding and other intellectual pursuits. Participants will receive excellent resources that they can begin using immediately to plan and present a Maker-station and Space program of their own. Online Workshop 12 hours Overall Unit 1-This week we will explore the definition of MakerSpace. We will look at specific examples in various libraries and begin to learn how to create one yourself in your own library. Unit 2-Week 2 we will continue to look at techniques for creating a maker-station, tools and supplies you will need and how to locate materials and experts to facilitate programming. Safety issues will also be addressed. Designing space. What skills do participants learn? Unit 3-The best of Makerspace Programming ideas. This week we will look at libraries that have been successful in creating effective workspace programming in their libraries. What do they know, that will help you? Unit 4-Sorting programs using Age, Interest, and Budget as a factor. Create a MakerSpace program proposal. Please feel free to forward to any library IT staff member who might be interested in participating. Thanks. Janet Dear Library Technology Professional, Would you like to participate in research that may help make library workplaces more pleasant and rewarding? We are writing to invite you to participate in a research study that aims to identify factors associated with recruiting and retaining IT staff in libraries in the United States and Canada. We want to know which factors-and types of factors-are most likely to attract you to a library IT job and encourage you to stay at a library IT job. There are no direct benefits to you, but we hope this information will help library and other leaders to create workplaces that are more attractive to library IT personnel. You must be over age 18 and currently employed in a library IT-related position in the United States or Canada in order to participate in this study. If you consent to participate, you will be asked to complete an online survey, which should take about 15-20 minutes to complete. This research is being conducted under the direction of Janet Crum, Northern Arizona University, Cline Library. To provide consent and participate in the survey, please visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B2RVW77. To thank you for your time, you will be given the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $50 gift card: 1. Participation in the research study is not required to enter the drawing; 2. Entries are limited to one entry per person -subjects under age 18 must have written consent from a parent or lawful guardian; and 3. The session will take place on the 29th of October 2015 ? 11:00 Rome Time [3] and will be presented by Thembani Malapela, Knowledge and Information Management Officer working in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [4]. ABOUT THE WEBINAR AIMS is a community of practice for agricultural information management practitioners worldwide. The strength of AIMS lies in its two fold ability. Firstly, that it is the portal of choice providing information about standards, technology and good practices in the context of Open Access and Open Data. Secondly, that it a true community where members collaborate and share their experiences, ask questions through blogs, news items and discussions. The primary aim to get news and updates about information management in agricultural research and also to review various approaches that AIMS Community members can interact with AIMS ? this include how to receive news, how to subscribe to content, how to share news items and join discussion groups. The AIMS taxonomy and the platform capabilities for doing such will be reviewed. Why not make a date and find out how you can participate. We welcome proposals from anyone who feels they have something to offer regarding library technology. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide financial support for speakers. Because of the limited number of programs, LITA IGs and Committees will receive preference where two equally well-written programs are submitted. The Open Preservation Foundation (OPF) took over stewardship of JHOVE in February 2015 to provide it with a permanent and sustainable home. The focus of this release is on stability of the code base, so very little code has changed. The JHOVE README ( https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/blob/integration/README.md) provides an overview of the steps we have taken to put in place automated build, testing and deployment, and mavenisation of the code base. The main functional change is that JHOVE now has a dedicated cross-platform installer. Installation instructions for Windows, Mac and Linux users are published in the README (https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove#installation) . Instructions are available for developers to try including the new Maven version in their own projects ( https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove#for-developers-jhove-jars-via-maven). It should continue to work identically to the previous version apart from one or two small output details (e.g. version number, mentions of OPF). We welcome feedback on the new release. Please tell us whether the installer is an improvement on the previous zip distribution package and what we could do to make installation and configuration of JHOVE easier. The best method for providing feedback is by using the JHOVE issue tracker ( https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/issues) on GitHub. Here is an example of a recently logged and fixed issue ( https://github.com/openpreserve/jhove/issues/44) . The JHOVE web page (http://jhove.openpreservation.org/) has been restructured to make it easier to navigate. The logo has been refreshed and work will continue on the look and feel over the coming weeks. A new mailing list for the discussion of use and development of JHOVE is being set up and will be available shortly. This JHOVE beta release and plans for future development have been made under the guidance of the JHOVE Product Board ( http://www.openpreservation.org/technology/products/jhove/) . OPF members received a preview of this release to test and provide feedback. A summary of responsibilities is below. The full description can be found here: http://cusp.nyu.edu/career-prospects/careers/research-information-scientist/ The CUSP NYU data facility has been established to support the empirical study of cities in conjunction with New York based researchers, agencies, and citizens. It uses modern approaches to reduce the multiple technical, legal, bureaucratic, capacity, and cost barriers to access so that the full research and policy benefits can be realized. The facility has two goals: (i) ensure that new and existing urban data are made available to and used by current and future members of the research community in a state of the art facility, and (ii) staff in government agencies and local citizens are engaged by the ability to use the facility to addressing important urban problems. The research information scientist will serve as an information specialist, programmer, and ETL engineer, in order to support the full CUSP data life cycle, including data curation, data ingestion, data discovery, and researcher access. The research information scientist will be responsible for collecting, developing, collating, archiving and communicating information about research datasets in the CUSP data facility. In that role, s/he will oversee the metadata management system and design/implement new features or services as needed, which requires strong programming and database skills. S/he will provide programming support to software engineers, in order to adapt in-house data profiling and discovery software to build and update in-house software. A successful research information scientist candidate will also be able to develop basic and execute complex ETL scripts for data ingest and researcher database development. This person will lead CUSP?s metadata knowledge management ? structural and domain information about data assets. In this role, s/he will communicate with domain experts on NYC and related open data, urban policy research data, and physical measurement data, creating a database to facilitate data discovery beyond the standard laundry list approach. It was therefore somewhat of a surprise to the library community when, less than a year later, the global library cooperative OCLC introduced Schema.org structured data markup into the pages for the 300 million plus resources on Worldcat.org. Things have changed significantly since those early days. Schema.org structured data is now published on over 10 million web domains; the vocabulary has expanded to include over 600 Types and nearly 1,000 Properties; it?s core capability for describing bibliographic resources has been greatly extended. There is now a specific bibliographic extension -- bib.schema.org and, Schema.org implementations and discussions are becoming common in the library community. Join Independent consultant Richard Wallis, former Technology Evangelist for OCLC, currently working with Google on Schema.org, for this two part, in-depth mini-series look at Schema.org, its use, and extension in the bibliographic domain and beyond. *PART 1 WEBINAR: Fit For a Bibliographic Purpose* *Date/Time:* Wednesday, 18 November 2015 at 10:00am-11:15am EST (UTC 15:00:00 - *World Clock:* http://bit.ly/Webinar-1_Wallis) *Abstract:* In this first webinar in the series, Independent Consultant, Richard Wallis, traces the history of the Schema.org vocabulary, plus its applicability to the bibliographic domain. He will share the background to, and activities of, the Schema Bib Extend W3C Community Group he chairs; why it was set up; how it approached the creation of bibliographic extension proposals; and how those proposals were shaped. He will then review the current status of the vocabulary and the recent introduction of the bib.schema.org and auto.schema.org extensions. Although Richard will be using bibliographic examples, the content of this webinar will be of interest and relevance to those in other domains, and/or considering other extensions. *PART 2 WEBINAR: Extending Potential and Possibilities* *Date/Time:* Wednesday, 2 December 2015, 10:00am-11:15am EST (UTC 15:00:00 - *World Clock:* http://bit.ly/Webinar-2_Wallis) *Abstract:* In this second more technical webinar in the series, Independent Consultant, Richard Wallis, explains the Schema.org extension mechanism, for external and reviewed/hosted extensions, and their relationship to the core Schema.org vocabulary. He will take an in-depth look at, demonstrate, and share experiences in designing, and creating a potential extension to the vocabulary. He will step through the process of creating the required vocabulary definition and examples files on a local system using a few simple tools then sharing them on a publicly visible temporary cloud instance before proposing to the Schema.org group. *ABOUT THE PRESENTER:* Richard Wallis Independent Consultant, is a distinguished thought leader in Linked Data and Semantic Web who has been at the forefront of the emergence of these technologies for over 20 years. He is Chair of the Schema Bib Extend, and Schema Architypes, W3C Community Groups and evangelist for the adoption of Linked Data in cultural heritage and the wider Web. He has an international reputation for insightful and entertaining keynote sessions at library, Web, and Semantic Web focused events. Currently working with OCLC, Google, and the banking industry on the extension, application and use of the Schema.org vocabulary; he is a pragmatist who believes in searching for implementable solutions. --*Free Registration now for Part 1* at http://bit.ly/wallis-part1 --*Free Registration for Part 2* (announcement coming soon on Webinar Website) ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-10-28 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am interested. > Have you gone through this process for your organization? Yes, I did this from 1998 through 2002, when I was the Librarian--the only librarian--at the Technical Resource Center at ALSTOM Signaling in Rochester, New York. ALSTOM Signaling is a manufacturer of railroad signals and railroad control systems with accounts all over the world. The Technical Resource Center was an engineering- and technology-oriented library whose customers were the engineers and project managers at the ALSTOM Signaling engineering and manufacturing facilities in Rochester, New York. (When I was there, the number of employees varied between 500 and 600 employees.) The Technical Resource Center had its own intranet site, on which the library created an on-line catalog of its collection and provided various other customized on-line resources that the library created to meet specific information needs of its in-house customers. In a number of cases, these customized on-line resources were developed to make it easier for employees to share the specialized knowledge that many of them had. > If you are also responsible for the intranet of an organization will mind to > contact me? I no longer work at ALSTOM Signaling, but when I was working there, I was a Web/intranet developer as well as a librarian, and I was the person who set up and maintained the library's intranet. > I will like to see what areas I should keep in mind to do > so and what services should be the best to maintain and focus on.
