All our other EBSCO database subscriptions use URLs that go directly to the database search screen. Since we have over two dozen EBSCO databases, it's really clunky to have people click on a "MyHeritage Library" link on our web site and land on a screen with dozens of choices and icons. Customizations to "Select Services" seem to be limited to putting some text at the top and bottom of the screen, and choosing between 1, 2, or 3 columns. I don't see any way to limit the number of databases ("profiles") that display on the screen to anything less than our entire list. Has anyone found a way to automatically get people through the screen and on into MyHeritage Library? It is part of our research project here at Utrecht University that aims to chart the changing landscape of scholarly communication. It generates data through a global survey available in (simplified) Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish and soon also in Arabic and Japanese. Its results will not only simply tell what research tools people use, but by that also show revealed preferences regarding scholarly communication in various cultures. https://innoscholcomm.typeform.com/to/Csvr7b?source=ML Anyone carrying out research or supporting research can take it. It is easy to do: just click the tools you use. It takes 8-12 minutes to complete and you can opt to receive a visual characterization of your workflow compared to that of your peer group. The survey will run until February 2016. Over 5,500 people responded so far and over 60 institutions/libraries are partnering in distributing the survey (in return for institutionally tagged data). The data (anonymized) will become available for analyses by others. All details, other language versions, preliminary results and more are at https://101innovations.wordpress.com/. This survey, now in its ninth annual iteration, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow librarians who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. If you have responded in previous years, please respond again this year to help identify any trends regarding improvement or worsening of the products or support services. For more information about the survey, for instructions on how to participate, and to see results of previous year's survey reports, see: http://librarytechnology.org/web/breeding/AutomationSurvey/ I hope to see a large number of responses from web4lib members. Are you thinking about ways that libraries can improve services to users? The American Library Association (ALA) gives an annual grant for those conducting research that will lead to the improvement of services to users. The Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant is given to one or more librarians or library educators who will conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group of people. The grant, up to $3,000, will be given to a proposed project that aims to answer a question of vital importance to the library community that is national in scope. Among the review panel criteria are: * The research problem is clearly defined, with a specific question or questions that can be answered by collecting data. The applicant(s) clearly describe a strategy for data collection whose methods are appropriate to the research question(s). A review of the literature, methodologies, etc. is not considered research (e.g., methodology review rather than application of a methodology) for purposes of the award, except where the literature review is the primary method of collecting data. * The research question focuses on benefits to library users and should be applied and have practical value as opposed to theoretical. * The applicant(s) demonstrate ability to undertake and successfully complete the project. The application provides evidence that sufficient time and resources have been allocated to the effort. Appropriate institutional commitment to the project has been secured. Any ALA member may apply, and the Jury would welcome projects that involve both a practicing librarian and a researcher. Deadline is January 15, 2016. Procedures and an application form are available at: http://www.ala.org/offices/ors/orsawards/baberresearchgrant/babercarroll. Regarding Deep Freeze... I shudder at the thought of having to thaw the systems and update the antivirus dat files manually each day (being a municipal public library, the city's IT dept has the license for the enterprise management console, so I can't centrally manage the AV software). In any case, I have our Deep Freeze config set to thaw the systems on a nightly schedule, and have our AV software update schedule coincident with that Deep Freeze thaw schedule. Another suggestion (which I've yet to try myself) is to repartition the drive, creating a rather small partition that will be excluded from being frozen (according to Faronics' tech support, it's better performance-wise to do this rather than to have the Deep Freeze config create a thawspace partition). Using the GroupPolicy and/or permissions, protect that drive from being accessed by patrons. Then check to see where the antivirus dat files are stored by the AV software and either change the settings for the AV software so that the dat files are stored in the "unfrozen" partition or use the Windows mklink command to create the equivalent of a Linux symbolic link such that the AV software's appdata directory is linked to the unfrozen partition. There's the outside chance that simply installing the AV software to that partition will be all that you need to do if whatever AV software you use stores its dat files somewhere with its program files (which is not a good practice). I suspect that this would be a better solution to the one we're currently using, if for no other reason than power consumption and all those systems downloading dat files around the same time. I'm not a big fan of it, but it seems okay. The other uses Avast's free to libraries and schools. I'm happier with it. Neither can update a frozen PC. > Each morning, we thaw Deep Freeze and manually update the anti virus dat > file. Is there a better approach? Yes, what John Lolis wrote. Use Deep Freeze's configuration to automate the process. It is very similar to the process for automating Windows Updates.
