But wait: Windows 10 is supposed to use facial recognition software to unlock your computer.

This lead Dark Reading to create a cartoon where the main character said "My biometric recognition app said I needed a shave."

I think it’s much more likely in the near future to use wearables to replace cards. A library app on a person’s watch could let them walk in and out of the building with items, login by proximity, etc. etc. I think biometrics are probably logistically an extension of wearbles. Once the infrastructure is built to send information to and from an array of devices on a person without necessarily engaging that device to behave in a particular way, then the next step to remove friction is to replace the wearable entirely with something that is always on you – or in you.

One should also keep in mind that fingerprints are relatively easy to copy well enough to fool a scanner (hand prints are better suited).  There may also be enough people for whom a given biometric is unsuitable (I frequently lose my fingerprints due to eczema)  that cards will would still have to be issued as an alternative.  There are likely related problems with facial, voice, and retinal scanning.

Hi,

We use library cards with barcodes. Can biometrics be used to replace these cards, or is this technology simply too expensive? I believe that it is possible to store a number based on your finger print without having to store an image of the actual finger print. I know it might be difficult to reassure the public of this, but, on the face of it, the benefits of biometrics would be considerable.

I think our self-service stations would work much better if they employed biometrics rather than barcode scanners.
