The solution we arrived at was to move one of our fax-enabled Canon copier/printers behind a service desk and have staff do the faxing for patrons. One of the possible solutions I proposed was to set up a dedicated scanning station that had the Canon fax software installed. In that case, patrons would have been able to fax either scanned hardcopy or document files by printing them to the Canon fax copier. We decided it would have been too complicated a process, especially since faxing hardcopy would have entailed scanning the pages to a file first and then "printing" them. As for recouping the cost for faxing, it would be interesting if EnvisionWare's LPT:One print management software could be tweaked to charge for printing to a fax device. And I'm sorry... I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have to ask... anyone out there had any experience in offering a FREE fax service to the public? pax. We are now accepting proposals for publication in our 29th issue. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share your ideas and experiences. To be included in the 29th issue, which is scheduled for publication in mid July, 2015, please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals at http://journal.code4lib.org/submit-proposal or to journal at code4lib.org by Friday, April 10, 2015. When submitting, please include the title or subject of the proposal in the subject line of the email message. C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics that support the mission of the journal. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Practical applications of library technology (both actual and hypothetical) * Technology projects (failed, successful, or proposed), including how they were done and challenges faced * Case studies * Best practices * Reviews * Comparisons of third party software or libraries * Analyses of library metadata for use with technology * Project management and communication within the library environment * Assessment and user studies C4LJ strives to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure. Writers should aim for the middle ground between blog posts and articles in traditional refereed journals. Where appropriate, we encourage authors to submit code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code. For more information, visit C4LJ's Article Guidelines or browse articles from previous issues on our website: http://journal.code4lib.org. Remember, for consideration for the 29th issue, please send proposals, abstracts, or draft articles to journal at code4lib.org no later than Friday, April 10, 2015. Send in a submission. There might be some that are ad-supported, but I have not heard about any. It would be possible to build your own, however you would either need a modem and phone line or lines, or a connection to a SIP provider. I think that would stretch the free model. In order to repeat an earlier study, to apply data from an earlier study to a new model, we need to be able to precisely identify the very subset of data used. While verbal descriptions of how the subset was created (e.g. by providing selected attribute ranges and time intervals) are hardly precise enough and do not support automated handling, keeping redundant copies of the data in question does not scale up to the big data settings encountered in many disciplines today. Furthermore, we need to be able to handle situations where new data gets added or existing data gets corrected or otherwise modified over time. Conventional approaches, such as assigning persistent identifiers to entire data sets or individual subsets or data items, are thus not sufficient. In this webinar, Andreas Rauber will review the challenges identified above and discuss solutions that are currently elaborated within the context of the working group of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) on Data Citation: Making Dynamic Data Citeable. The approach is based on versioned and time-stamped data sources, with persistent identifiers being assigned to the time-stamped queries/expressions that are used for creating the subset of data. We will further review results from the first pilots evaluating the approach. *Presenter:* *Andreas Rauber* is Associate Professor at the Department of Software Technology and Interactive Systems (IFS) at the Vienna University of Technology (TU-Wien). He furthermore is president of AARIT, the Austrian Association for Research in IT and a Key Researcher at Secure Business Austria (SBA-Research). He is co-chairing the RDA Working Group on Data Citation together with Ari Asmi and Dieter van Uytvanck. He received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology in 1997 and 2000, respectively. In 2001 he joined the National Research Council of Italy ([http://www.cnr.it/sitocnr/home.html CNR]) in Pisa as an ERCIM Research Fellow, followed by an ERCIM Research position at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA), at Rocquencourt, France, in 2002. From 2004-2008 he was also head of the iSpaces] research group at the eCommerce Competence Center (ec3). ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-04-05 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The longer length allows the depth of coverage of a conference coupled with the convenience of a webinar. *Date:* April 29, 2015 *Time: *11:00 am - 5:00 pm Eastern *Event webpage: * *http://www.niso.org/news/events/2015/virtual_conferences/assessment_toolbox/* *ABOUT THE VIRTUAL CONFERENCE* Every day libraries and publishers are asked to demonstrate the value of the content they provide through quantitative metrics and assessments. Existing metrics, such as the Journal Impact Factor, and tools, such as COUNTER and SUSHI, have proven their worth in providing useful data. But as both the forms of content and the way content is used evolves, alternative forms of assessment are also needed. Data at the container level, e.g., the journal, is no longer sufficient. Downloading full text in a PDF file is no longer the only (or even primary) way that users access content. Citation alone is not sufficient to capture all the new social media ways that content is shared. Traditional assessment techniques are being modified, completely new measures are being developed, and both old and new need to be blended in a meaningful way that creates a trusted system. Both the creation of these new or blended metrics and the information the metrics provide are generating new services and products. This Virtual Conference will examine some of the innovative ideas and techniques that are being employed in the never-ending struggle to measure how content is accessed and used. It will include discussions related to usage statistics, altmetrics, gaming the numbers, and open access. NISO's Alternative Assessment Metrics Initiative will also be discussed. *NEW: Training Thursday!* All registrants to this virtual conference will receive a login to the associated Training Thursday on *Implementing SUSHI/COUNTER at Your Institution* to be held on *May 7 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)*. I believe that it is possible to store a number based on your finger print without having to store an image of the actual finger print. I know it might be difficult to reassure the public of this, but, on the face of it, the benefits of biometrics would be considerable. I think our self-service stations would work much better if they employed biometrics rather than barcode scanners. Hi, We use library cards with barcodes. Can biometrics be used to replace these cards, or is this technology simply too expensive? I believe that it is possible to store a number based on your finger print without having to store an image of the actual finger print. I know it might be difficult to reassure the public of this, but, on the face of it, the benefits of biometrics would be considerable. At one time, after noticing so many intrusion attempts from China, I had wanted to block by country code, but our director didn't care for that, raising the question, "What if one of our patrons travels to China?" ?But after reading the message below on the ezproxy listserv earlier today about a forum in Persian that provides EZProxy passwords, I may raise the issue again, at least as far as blocking access from the .ir top level domain to our ezproxy port. And of course, blocking access by country code doesn't totally block would-be hackers from those countries... all they'd have to do is go through some proxy outside that country. ### Hi folks, We?d been having some sustained intrusion attempts, (skipping around on IP addresses etc.) so I?ve been keeping an eye on our log files. Started noticing an interesting referring url from the .ir domain. We cover HTML5, CSS3, Usability, Accessibility, User-Centered Design principles, Technology options, etc. I require each student to work with a 'client' to redesign an existing Web site or create a new Web site for a non-profit organization, preferably a special, academic, school, or public library, or library organization, but other organizations or even for profit small business sites are welcomed. The Summer 2015 semester is May 18 - August 6., 2014. The Fall 2015 semester is August 24 - December 9. These are Library School students working through Distance Learning who are just beginning with Web Design, HTML5 and CSS3. What we are looking for is small scale redesign projects, e.g., one area of a larger site - or a new design for a special patron group. Students work for you will be an example or dummy site constructed with simple HTML5 and CSS3, that you may choose to use or not use. They will also choose an open source CMS or Template site as a secondary option to implement your example or dummy site design. That also you may choose to use or not use. (e.g, Wordpress, Googlesites, Weebly) Please NOTE: We cannot work with anyone who is looking for Web development (e.g., PHP/Python programming, Mysql or other database management, server maintenance, proprietary content management systems, etc.) and We cannot work with those who merely want link-checking, spell-checking, and general clerical work. I cannot guarantee that any of my students will choose your projects. Also, some larger scale projects, the students may form teams to work on them. Students may also choose the library they currently work in or a non-profit organization known to them to work with. So, if you would like to be on the list of projects for my students to consider please email me with the following information: What I need from you: 1. Contact person(s) with email and telephone numbers (this would be the 'client' that students are expected to interview and interact with cooperatively to come up with design options) 2. The URL of the current Web site (if there is one - otherwise URL of the overall site associated with your organization) 3. Brief description of what you would like to have done with the site. 4. A commitment by the contact person(s) to be available by email or Webchat from June 14 - August 7, 2014 to work with my students during the Summer Semester.Availability of a contact person is critical. Supported by expert facilitators Cal Lee and Kam Woods from the University of North Carolina, participants will get hands-on experience using the BitCurator tools including the latest developments with BitCurator Access . The BitCurator Environment is a suite of open source digital forensics and data analysis tools to help collecting institutions (libraries, archives, and museums) process and provide access to born-digital materials. Agenda The agenda and further information about the event is available on the OPF wiki page: http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/KB/2015-05-29+From+the+Toolbox+-+BitCurator+Digital+Forensics+workshop Who should attend? This workshop is intended for archivists, manuscript curators, librarians or others who are responsible for acquiring, transferring and/or providing access collections of born-digital materials, particularly those that are received on removable media. We will assume that participants are familiar with basic digital curation issues and practices. Though it is not mandatory, participants will ideally know how to create disk images; generate and verify cryptographic hashes of files; and examine the contents of a file in a hex editor. It will also be helpful to understand the role and purpose of filesystems, file headers, and file signatures. Knowledge of Linux command line operations will also be beneficial, but is not a necessary prerequisite to participation. We'll be on hand to help with tasks, and many of the tools have graphic user interfaces. Why attend? Participants will learn about and get experience using BitCurator environment tools that can assist with various aspects of digital curation, including pre-imaging data triage; forensic disk imaging; file system analysis and reporting; identification of private and individually identifying information; and export of technical and other metadata. They will also learn about tools that are currently available but undergoing significant further development for providing access to data from disk images and redacting sensitive content. Participants should leave with a practical understanding of how to apply these tools in their own institutions and with contacts in peer institutions who are undertaking similar work. Register http://opf-fromthetoolbox-bitcurator-digitalforensics.eventbrite.co.uk. OPF members are invited to attend free of charge. The price for non-members is 75 Euros. Workshop on Digital Scientific Communication (WDSC2015) @TPDL2015 Message-ID: [*** Apologies for cross-posting ***] ****************************************************************** Third Int. Workshop on Digital Scientific Communication (WDSC 2015) Reuse, Sharing, and Assessment of All Research Products Pozna?, Poland, September 18th, 2015 Web site: http://wdsc2015.research-infrastructures.eu/ E-mail: wdsc2015 at isti.cnr.it Twitter: @WDSC2015 In conjunction with the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2015) Proceedings published as special issue of the D-Lib Magazine Journal (http://www.dlib.org) ******************************************************************* ###### Workshop Objectives ###### The Workshop in Digital Scientific Communication (WDSC) aims at addressing all issues arising in the attempt of revising current scientific communication practices and surrounding or related ICT or RI technologies in order to deliver to scientists a complete picture of existing research results. The main motivations and challenges are the identification of solutions for partly or fully sharing scope and/or results of the scientific process in order to maximize reusability, accessibility, and assessment of research activities. WDSC takes over the LCPD workshop series (held in Malta 2013 and London 2014, in conjunction with TPDL conferences) from a broader perspective and as such it becomes its natural continuation. ###### Workshop topics ###### The topics of this workshop are of interest to, but not limited to, the following research avenues: * Classification (models and ontologies), description (e.g. metadata), identity management, of products of science different from the traditional article * Representing, exchanging, sharing, assessing (peer-reviewing), depositing, preserving products different from the traditional article * Interlinking and contextualization: mining techniques, LOD, data models, relationships (citation, versioning), etc. * Findability of products of science: indexing, searching, browsing challenges * Controlled access (e.g. anonymization, role-driven views) * New publishing workflows for products different from the traditional article ###### Special theme ###### Although not mandatory, this year?s edition will also include a special focus on the ?publishing of scientific experiments?, i.e. any scientific products intended to convey and describe the scientific process (i.e. experiment) in such a way it can be ?repeated? by others. Special themes include, but are not limited to: * Identification, representation, description (metadata), deposition, preservation, evaluation, and interoperability for experiments * Enabling repetition (?same experiment, same laboratory?), replication (?same experiment, different laboratory?), reproduction (?same experiment, different input parameters?), or re-use of experiments (?use as parts of other experiments?) * Interlinking (and contextualizing) with other products of science, e.g. datasets, articles. * Research datasets, articles, and other product of research conceived to support experiment ?publishing?, e.g. executable papers, electronic notebooks, software journals, Elsevier?s ?article of the future?, software publishing, datasets embedding services. ###### Paper Submission ###### Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers. Submitted manuscripts will have to be in the range of 4000-5000 words and edited with OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word, following the "Matters of style" section in the author guidelines for D-Lib Magazine. Papers submitted to the workshop will undergo a single-blind peer-review process by Program Committee members. Accepted papers will be published as a special issue of the D-Lib Magazine journal, in the first Quarter of 2016. To be published on the proceedings, accepted contributions should be revised according to the reviews and consider the feedbacks from the workshops. Moreover, at least one author is required to register and present the paper at the workshop. ###### Submission System ###### Research papers must be submitted via the workshop submission system, available at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wdsc2015 ###### Important dates ###### Research paper submission: July 5th, 2015 - 23:59 CET Notification of acceptance: July 24th, 2015 Revised paper re-submission: after workshop date, to be agreed with D-Lib Magazine Workshop day: September 18th, 2015 ###### Workshop Organisers ###### - Lukasz Bolikowski, ICM, University of Warsaw, Poland - Paolo Manghi, Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (ISTI), National Research Council - (CNR), Pisa, Italy - Jochen Schirrwagen, Bielefeld University Library, Germany ---- Paolo Manghi Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione "A. Preserving the digital copy of the resource is an issue now being addressed, but what about the software used to create digital files? How can software on media which can no longer be read -- or no longer be read easily -- be preserved? If that software can?t be accessed, what happens to the material created by, and only read by, that software? Progress has been made in formulating standards for the preservation and description of digital materials and a framework for addressing digital item preservation has been proposed. Despite, however, meetings such as the Library of Congress? ?Preserving.exe: Toward a National Strategy for Preserving Software ,? no formal standard or framework yet exists for software digitization and preservation. This webinar will feature three presenters who will speak on aspects of software digitization and preservation, including a how-to approach (technical aspects), a metadata component, and observations from the field as part of the continuing discussion on the state of the field and the need for standardization. Topics and speakers are: ? *Software artifacts: Migration and Emulation* ? *Michael Lesk*, Professor of Library and Information Science, Rutgers University ? *Emulation in practice: Emulation as a Service at Yale University Library: Lessons learnt and plans for the future *? *Euan Cochrane*, Digital Preservation Manager, Yale University Library *REGISTRATION* *Registration is per site (access for one computer) and closes at 12:00 pm Eastern on May 13*. Discounts are available for NISO and NASIG members and students. NISO Library Standards Alliance (LSA) members receive one free connection as part of membership and do not need to register.
