building a photograph gathering website

Hi John,

Uh - sorry if this is a repeat. My fingers spazzed out and I don't know if I ctrl+sent the email or just closed the window. ANYWAY, I recommended just using WordPress and one of the many various "user submitted posts" plugins people have created for any number of reasons: crowdsourcing, social tagging, etc.

Here's a quick roundup:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/user-submitted-posts/
http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/wordpress-post-frontend-plugins/

Puzzling one together with a unrelated plugins http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-allow-users-to-submit-posts-to-your-wordpress-site/

Most of these ^ have "premium" versions, but it wouldn't be hard to write the functionality yourself if you are comfortable doing some dev [or finding one]. The basic thing you are doing is

* Allow a user, without logging in, to submit content for review

* You or another editor reviews and publishes.

which is, of course, what WP does best. Coupled with an attractive, useful theme that handles featured images nicely, you can make a good collection. These can be rolled with other CMS's, too, like Drupal or Omeka; but I gather you can patch one together with less hassle using WordPress. Then, if you need more robust metadata attached to media, you or another dev can extend WP as needed. If you go this route or hit snags, https://www.facebook.com/groups/wordpress.librarians/ is fun and helpful.

Subject: [WEB4LIB] building a photograph gathering website

Hi,

We are interested in creating a website that will allow the public to submit historical photographs of our region along with a short description of the photograph. The plan is to make these images available on a searchable website after each image and its accompanying description has been approved by a moderator.

Are there 'out of the box' tools that I can use? Has any organization attempted something similar?

I would appreciate any advice.

Regards
John
