In 1995, Walt Crawford wrote that, "Telling the average public library patrons or average undergraduate students that they can traverse the Web to find a good WAIS server that may help them locate the information they need is basically telling them to go to hell."
This criticism was about the inaccessibility of online search. A similar charge can now be made against clunky library catalogs, in comparison to web-scale discovery services--which are (warts and all) largely better tools.
I had the pleasure of speaking at the Amigos "Discovery Tools Now and in the Future" conference yesterday about making the case for discovery. My talk is now online, for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWqoaBMepJ8
Regards,
John
