From waltcrawford at GMAIL.COM Sun Nov 2 13:35:11 2014 From: waltcrawford at GMAIL.COM (Walt Crawford) Date: Sun, 2 Nov 2014 10:35:11 -0800 Subject: Cites & Insights 14:11 (December 2014) available Message-ID: The December 2014 Cites & Insights (14:11) is now available for downloading at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i11.pdf This print-oriented two-column version is 34 pages long. If you plan to read the issue online or on an ereader (tablet, notebook, etc.), you may prefer the single-column 6x9" version, available at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i11on.pdf The single-column version is 77 pages long, because the issue includes many tables, which aren't broken across columns or pages. The issue consists of one essay, really the second part of a two-part essay (and you'll want to read the first part, in the October/November 2014 C&I or its one-column equivalent, first): Intersections: Journals and "Journals": Taking a Deeper Look: Part 2: DOAJ Subset and Additional Notes If you've been reading various commentaries about Gold OA journals--including Part 1--you may be wondering where all those supposed no-fee Gold OA journals are. This piece helps to tell that story. Specifically, of 2,843 journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals as of May 7, 2014 that have an English interface version, aren't from either OASPA members or Beall-list publishers, and are not about aspects of medicine or biology--and that actually published one or more articles between January 2011 and June 30, 2014--more than 78% do not charge fees of any sort, and those journals published 53% of the articles published by the whole group during that period. Those percentages grow to almost 92% and more than 81%, respectively, for 1,426 journals in the humanities and social sciences. This article looks at the "DOAJ set" in depth, including new tables that show distribution of articles (and journals publishing articles during a year) on a year-by-year basis, including the percentage of free journals and articles from those journals for each year. But there's more: I also look at journals by broad topic (27 of them, in 8 even broader groups and two extremely broad supergroups), showing simplified tables for each topic within the DOAJ set and overall numbers for all three sets (OASPA, Beall and DOAJ). Broader groups are compared for all three sets. There's a brief discussion (with two graphs) of starting dates for journals. There's a less-brief consideration of average cost per article by topic, making some simplifying assumptions Those expecting my comments on the new DOAJ criteria and my thoughts on diseconomies of scale for some kinds of OA journal will have to wait for the January 2015 C&I, which will also look at (at least some of the) DOAJ journals omitted this time around. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2014-11-02 From lauren at ARCH-IVE.ORG Mon Nov 3 12:11:10 2014 From: lauren at ARCH-IVE.ORG (Lauren Meyers) Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2014 09:11:10 -0800 Subject: Save the date - TCDL 2015, April 27-28 in Austin! The intensive 230+ page report gives detailed comparisons and data about how these libraries are handling an array of issues and developments, including but not limited to: trends in staffing and use of personnel, operating budget, capital budgets, digitization strategies, use of open access, 3D printing, grants management, technology investment, employee productivity growth, database licensing and much more. Data is broken out separately by library staff size, region of the world and for corporate/legal libraries, university libraries and for other non-profit/government libraries. Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: ? More than half (54.55 percent) of all survey participants report that librarian salaries and benefits at their respective institutions have ?more or less declined in real terms? over the past year. ? For nearly half (45.45 percent) of all survey participants, the library?s capital budget has not changed over the past three years. Only four participants report that it has increased ?somewhat,? while the remaining eight libraries reported a decrease in the capital budget over this time. ? 40.91 percent of all survey participants say spending on acquisitions of new IT equipment stock has stayed the same over the last three years. ? 54.55 percent of university libraries are open to the prospect of digitizing the out-of-copyright books from their special collections. ? 27.27 percent of libraries in the sample reported an increase in personnel in the Public Relations & Marketing department. ? The libraries in the sample spent a mean of $1.71 million on all database licensing. ? 39.23 percent of the subscription budgets at university libraries consist of consortia purchases, compared to a mean of 13.33 percent for the government/non-profit libraries in the sample and a mean of just 1.25 percent for the corporate/legal libraries. This survey, now in its eighth annual iteration, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow librarians who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. If you have responded in previous years, please respond again this year to help identify any trends regarding improvement or worsening of the products or support services. For more information about the survey, for instructions on how to participate, and to see results of previous year's survey reports, see: http://librarytechnology.org/web/breeding/AutomationSurvey/ I hope to see a large number of responses from web4lib members. Also, feel free to forward this request to any other library-related list. Please let me know if there are any questions regarding the survey. The organizers are pleased to invite you to contribute to the program. This year's conference theme is: # LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD: OPEN REPOSITORIES AT THE CROSSROADS # OR2015 is the tenth OR conference, and this year's overarching theme reflects that milestone: Looking Back/Moving Forward: Open Repositories at the Crossroads. It is an opportunity to reflect on and to celebrate the transformative changes in repositories, scholarly communication and research data over the last decade. More critically however, it will also help to ensure that open repositories continue to play a key role in supporting, shaping and sharing those changes and an open agenda for research and scholarship. OR2015 will provide an opportunity to explore the demands and roles now expected of both repositories and the staff who develop, support and manage them - and to prepare them for the challenges of the next decade. We welcome proposals on this theme, but also on the theoretical, practical, organizational or administrative topics related to digital repositories. We are particularly interested in: 1. SUPPORTING OPEN SCHOLARSHIP, OPEN SCIENCE, AND CULTURAL HERITAGE ONLINE Papers are invited to consider how repositories can best support the needs of open science, open scholarship, and cultural heritage to make research as accessible as possible, including: * Open access, open data and open educational resources * Scholarly workflows, publishing and communicating scientific knowledge * Compliance with funder mandates * Considerations for cultural heritage and digital humanities resources 2. MANAGING RESEARCH (AND OPEN) DATA Papers are invited to consider how repositories can support the needs of research data. Areas of interest are: * Data registries * Storage * Curation lifecycle management * Management and digital preservation tools 3. INTEGRATING WITH EXTERNAL SYSTEMS Papers are invited to explore, evaluate, or demonstrate integration with external systems, including: * CRIS and research management systems * Notification systems (e.g. SHared Access Research Ecosystem, SHARE) * Remote identifier services (e.g. ORCID, DOI, etc.) * Preservation services * Archival systems (e.g. CALM or Archivists' Toolkit) 4. RE-USING REPOSITORY CONTENT Papers are invited to show case how repository content can be re-used in the context of: * Discipline-based repositories and services * Discovery services * Integration of semantic technologies * Repository networks 5. EXPLORING METRICS AND ASSESSMENT Papers are invited to present experiences on scholarly metrics and assessment services, particularly: * Bibliometrics * Downloads (e.g. COUNTER compliance) * Analytics * Altmetrics 6. MANAGING RIGHTS Papers are invited to examine the role of rights management in the context of open repositories, including: * Research and scholarly communication outputs * Licenses (e.g. Creative Commons, Open Data Commons) * Embargoes * Requirements of funder mandates 7. DEVELOPING AND TRAINING STAFF Papers are invited to consider the evolving role of staff who support and manage repositories across libraries, cultural heritage organizations, research offices and computer centres, especially: * New roles and responsibilities * Training needs and opportunities * Career path and recruitment * Community support 8. BUILDING THE PERFECT REPOSITORY Papers are invited to look ahead to OR16 and beyond to consider what the perfect repository would look like: * Key features and services * Who would be its users? * How would it transform scholarly communication? * What lessons have been learned since the first OR? * Or, is it a pipe dream and there's no such thing? Submissions that demonstrate original and repository-related work outwith these themes will be considered, but preference will be given to submissions which address them. # KEY DATES # * 30 January 2015: Deadline for submissions * 27 March 2015: Submitters notified of acceptance to general conference * 10 April 2015: Submitters notified of acceptance to Interest Groups * 8-11 June 2015: OR2015 conference # SUBMISSION PROCESS # ## cONFERENCE PAPERS AND PANELS ## Two to four-page proposals for presentations or panels that deal with digital repositories and repository services (see below for optional Proposal Templates). Abstracts of accepted papers will be made available through the conference's web site, and later they and associated materials will be made available in an open repository. In general, sessions are an hour and a half long with three papers; panels may take an entire session. Relevant papers unsuccessful in the main track will automatically be considered for inclusion, as appropriate, as an Interest Group presentation, poster or 24/7. ## INTEREST GROUP PRESENTATIONS ## The opportunity to engage with and learn more about the work of relevant communities of interest is a key element of Open Repositories. One to two page proposals are invited for presentations or panels that focus on the work of such communities, traditionally DSpace, EPrints and Fedora, describing novel experiences or developments in the construction and use of repositories involving issues specific to these technical platforms. Further information about applications for additional Interest Groups and guidance on submissions will be forthcoming. ## 24x7 PRESENTATIONS ## One to two-page proposals for 7 minute presentations comprising no more than 24 slides. Similar to Pecha Kuchas or Lightning Talks, these 24x7 presentations will be grouped into blocks based on conference themes, with each block followed by a moderated discussion / question and answer session involving the audience and whole block of presenters. This format will provide conference goers with a fast-paced survey of like work across many institutions, and presenters the chance to disseminate their work in more depth and context than a traditional poster. ### "REPOSITORY RANTS" 24x7 BLOCK ### One block of 24x7's will revolve around "repository rants": brief expos?s that challenge the conventional wisdom or practice, and highlight what the repository community is doing that is misguided, or perhaps just missing altogether. The top proposals will be incorporated into a track meant to provoke unconventional approaches to repository services. ### "REPOSITORY RAVES" 24x7 BLOCK ### One block of 24x7's at OR2015 will revolve around "repository raves": brief expos?s that celebrate particular practice and processes, and highlight what the repository community is doing that is right. The top proposals will be incorporated into a track meant to celebrate successful approaches to repository services. ## POSTERS ## One-page proposal for posters that showcase current work are invited from researchers, repository managers, administrators, developers and practitioners. There will be the opportunity to make a 60-second pitch for your poster during "minute madness" and a chance for attendees to view and to discuss your work during the poster reception. ## 2015 DEVELOPER TRACK ## Each year a significant proportion of the delegates at Open Repositories are software developers who work on repository software or related services. The approach taken by LRMI is to extend the schema.org ontology so that educationally significant characteristics and relationships can be expressed. In this webinar, Phil Barker and Lorna M. Campbell of Cetis will introduce schema.org and present the background to LRMI, its aims and objectives, and who is involved in achieving them. The webinar will outline the technical aspects of the LRMI specification, describe some example implementations and demonstrate how the discoverability of learning resources may be enhanced. Phil and Lorna will present the latest developments in LRMI implementation, drawing on an analysis of its use by a range of open educational resource repositories and aggregators, and will report on the potential of LRMI to enhance education search and discovery services. Whereas the development of LRMI has been inspired by schema.org, the webinar will also include discussion of whether LRMI has applications beyond those of schema.org. *SPEAKERS:* *Lorna Campbell* has worked in the domain of open education technology and interoperability standards for over fifteen years and has contributed to the development of a number of learning resource metadata specifications. Phil and Lorna were commissioned by Creative Commons to manage the third phase of the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative. LRMI is co-led by Creative Commons and the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP)--now the 501(c)(3) arm of the Association of American Publishers. *Phil Barker* is a research fellow at Heriot-Watt University who has worked supporting the use of learning technology in Higher Education for twenty years. For much of this time he has worked with Lorna M. Campbell as part of Cetis. His work focuses on supporting the discovery and selection of appropriate resources, and he has contributed to the development of a number of learning resource metadata specifications. He was on the technical working group of the learning resource metadata initiative and has since worked on the third phase of LRMI promoting its uptake and use. *************************************************************************** *For more information and to register, visit the event webpage:* *DCMI:* http://dublincore.org/resources/training/ or *ASIS&T:* https://www.asis.org/Conferences/webinars/Webinar-DCMI-11-19-2014-register.html ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2014-11-18 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Just a few of the report's many findings are that: . More than half (54.55 percent) of all survey participants report that librarian salaries and benefits at their respective institutions have "more or less declined in real terms" over the past year. . For nearly half (45.45 percent) of all survey participants, the library's capital budget has not changed over the past three years. Only four participants report that it has increased "somewhat," while the remaining eight libraries reported a decrease in the capital budget over this time. . 40.91 percent of all survey participants say spending on acquisitions of new IT equipment stock has stayed the same over the last three years. . 54.55 percent of university libraries are open to the prospect of digitizing the out-of-copyright books from their special collections. . 27.27 percent of libraries in the sample reported an increase in personnel in the Public Relations & Marketing department. . The libraries in the sample spent a mean of $1.71 million on all database licensing. . 39.23 percent of the subscription budgets at university libraries consist of consortia purchases, compared to a mean of 13.33 percent for the government/non-profit libraries in the sample and a mean of just 1.25 percent for the corporate/legal libraries.
