From waltcrawford at GMAIL.COM Sat Mar 1 12:47:46 2014 From: waltcrawford at GMAIL.COM (Walt Crawford) Date: Sat, 1 Mar 2014 09:47:46 -0800 Subject: Cites & Insights 14:4 available Message-ID: he April 2014 issue of Cites & Insights (volume 14, issue 4, whole # 172) is now available for downloading at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i4.pdf The print-oriented two-column edition is 22 pages. Those reading online or on a tablet may prefer the 6x9" single-column version, which is 41 pages long, at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i4on.pdf This issue includes two essays: Intersections: Ethics and Access 1: The Sad Case of Jeffrey Beall (pp. 1-14) The saga of Jeffrey Beall going from self-appointed investigator into "predatory" open access publishers and journals (and, notably, only OA journals) to ludicrous analyst of serials pricing and the reasons for OA--and beyond that to denouncing OA and its advocates? It's an odd story, and my version includes some really good ideas on avoiding sketchy journals (mostly from a notoriously worthwhile pseudonymous feathered library type) without buying into vigilantism. The Middle: Forecasts and Futurism (pp. 14-22) After skipping a year, it's time for another set of forecasts (short-term predictions) and futurism (long-term "predictions"), including some thoughts on the whole trendspotting game. Does that number in the title of the first essay suggest something? Why, yes, it does--probably two things, one of them almost certain to appear in the May 2014 issue, and involving another "B." ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2014-03-01 From roytennant at GMAIL.COM Mon Mar 3 14:12:42 2014 From: roytennant at GMAIL.COM (Roy Tennant) Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2014 11:12:42 -0800 Subject: mLibraries 5 early bird registration extension In-Reply-To: <663826664.1402848.1393870356839.JavaMail.root@mailid.telus.net> Message-ID: Forwarded by request. Recent research in the United States has suggested that the huge year on year increase in ebook titles is flattening out and that ebooks have become a fully accepted format for publishers, readers and libraries. However it is unclear at this point whether that levelling out is, in fact, the end point for ebook adoption ie that is there will be a continuing balance between print and electronic for some time to come - though it is difficult to say what that balance might be. But what is also clear is that there are other upcoming changes which go beyond what we currently think of as an ebook and that these changes may in turn promote another radical shift in digital content. So, what comes next? a.. There are now ebooks which derive from using a books' readership to create social networks which can both add to or redefine the ebook; b.. There are possibilities of aggregating ebooks so as to develop new bundled products - in effect packaged libraries - with different licensing and pricing models; c.. There are technological ways in which books can now be enhanced to provide new reading and learning experiences fully integrated with an individual's work flow or built into onlein courses such as MOOCs d.. There are opportunities for libraries and others to become publishers in their own right exploiting their own assets through ebook channels. Thus the 2014 Ebooks meeting will explore these themes in the context of academic publishing in the library and education sectors. It will bring together experts in digital publishing strategy, elearning communities and new business models so as to enable all partners to keep ahead of publishing changes. Speakers will include representatives of learning systems, digital publishing experts, specialist packaged services such as the Berg fashion library and experts in e-book procurement. There are agreed speakers from Sheffield University, Cambridge University Press, the Open University, Bloomsbury, JISC, SAGE, University of London and Proquest. The event will again be chaired by David Ball formerly PVC of Bournemouth University. As usual the meeting will be of interest to anyone concerned with the ebook and econtent business including librarians, ebook and other publishers, learning technologists and intermediaries such as ebook aggregators and resellers. If you need to get in touch with any one please email: malvia.plante at ucl.ac.uk The conference will, as usual be at the very economic rate ?115 for the day. It was further advanced as an important professional issue with the emergence into popular consciousness of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in 2011. The report presents detailed information on how many QR codes are being used, where they are used, how they are generated and how much they are being used. The study looks at the growth of QR codes in libraries over time, and at how libraries are monitoring, publicizing and educating their patron base about them. Data is broken out for size and type of library, and for the length of time that QR codes have been deployed in the library. Just a few of the study?s main findings are that: ? While just 8.7 percent of higher education libraries in the sample use QR codes for virtual reference purposes, this figure jumps to 42.86 percent for law/business and other special libraries. ? 30.61 percent of all survey participants use QR codes for LibGuides or other research guides. ? 18.75 percent of libraries with fewer than 10 employees track patron use of QR codes, this figure rises to 26.32 percent for the middle employee range (10 to 49) before jumping to 42.86 percent for the top range (50 or more employees). ? An overwhelming 93.88 percent of survey participants use free apps or services for QR code generation. Unlike accounts in the mainstream media and educational press, Invasion of the MOOCs is not written from the perspective of removed administrators, would-be education entrepreneurs/venture capitalists, or political pundits. Rather, this collection of essays comes from faculty who developed and taught MOOCs in 2012 and 2013, students who participated in those MOOCs, and academics and observers who have first hand experience with MOOCs and higher education. These twenty-one essays reflect the complexity of the very definition of what is (and what might in the near future be) a ?MOOC,? along with perspectives and opinions that move far beyond the polarizing debate about MOOCs that has occupied the media in previous accounts. Toward that end, Invasion of the MOOCs reflects a wide variety of impressions about MOOCs from the most recent past and projects possibilities about MOOCs for the not so distant future. Beyond that, the priorities they set for their libraries depend on the size and nature of their institutions and how many (or few) resources they have to work with. Those findings come out of a 2013 survey of American library directors, released on Tuesday by Ithaka S+R US. That?s the consulting and research arm of the nonprofit Ithaka group, which works on ?transformative uses of new technologies in higher education.? The survey went out to heads of academic libraries at all four-year colleges and universities in the United States; 499, or 33 percent, responded, according to the survey report?s authors, Matthew P. The report gives highly detailed data on library use of personnel for instructional purposes, trends in the number of in-class presentations, number of instructors used, students served and classes given. It pinpoints librarian opinion on the information literacy skills of their students in catalog, eBook and database use, facility with QR codes, search engine use, and use of special collections, among other areas. It serves as a guide to how students and information literacy instructors are assessed and what is the role of information literacy in college orientation. The report also gives detailed data on information literacy training requirements for graduation and on information literacy efforts for special populations, such as distance learning students. The report helps library planners to answer questions such as: what are norms for information literacy graduation requirements? What is the perception of the overall level of student skills in use of eBook collections? What percentage of libraries access faculty satisfaction with the information literacy effort? How high a priority is information literacy for college management? What is the role of instructional video in information literacy? Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: ? 29.41 percent of participating colleges offer an online or distance learning information literacy course. ? Librarians perceive that Information literacy is a ?high priority? for college management for 40 percent of the research universities in the sample, compared to just 6.67 percent of the 4-year colleges. ? 42.11 percent of community colleges in the sample say their librarians have faculty status; 100 percent for research universities in the sample. ? 35.29 percent of survey participants say the library administers information literacy tests to incoming freshman or transfer students. These are much more common among private colleges (52.38 percent) than among public colleges (23.33 percent). ? 50% of the colleges in the sample offer interactive information literacy tutorials. Many of these libraries are a long distance from headquarters. Ideally, we would like to have our public Internet PCs download a virtual desktop over the Internet using DSL broadband, on boot up. The virtual desktop would have to be capable of allowing users to view youtube flash videos. I am not sure if this is feasible. Changes would be made to the desktop at one place, and low spec PCs would be used at the libraries. Our second best solution would be to create bootable USB pens that would load Linux. These would be distributed to our libraries by post. My fear is that booting from a USB pen would result in a very slow browsing experience. Many users use the web to view Youtube. Is either approach technically feasible, and worth investigating further? I would appreciate any advice. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources that either reside in the public domain or carry a license that permits their free use, sharing and adaptation by all users. From textbooks to course materials, videos to software, journals to digital collections, the creation and sharing of open materials can reduce the cost of textbooks, expand access to knowledge, and support student success. This webcast will feature three librarians who have been leading OER projects on their campuses. Each will provide an overview of the project, discuss the impact achieved for students, and provide practical tips and advice for other campuses exploring OER initiatives. * Marilyn Billings, Scholarly Communication & Special Initiatives Librarian, University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries. Marilyn coordinates the Open Education Initiative, which has saved students more than $750,000 since 2011 by working with faculty to identify low-cost and free alternatives to expensive textbooks. * Kristi Jensen, Program Development Lead, eLearning Support Initiative, University of Minnesota Libraries. The University of Minnesota has emerged as a national leader through its Open Textbook Library, which is a searchable catalog of more than 100 open textbooks. The Libraries also partnered with other entities on campus for their Digital Course Pack project, which has helped streamline the course pack process and make materials more affordable for students. * Shan Sutton, Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication, Oregon State University Libraries. The OSU libraries are partnering with the OSU Press for a pilot program to develop open access textbooks by OSU faculty members. The program issued an RFP in the fall, and recently announced four winning proposals that will be published in 2014-2015. SPARC's Director of Open Education Nicole Allen will moderate questions during the webcast and relay them to the speakers. The report looks at the development of new versions of websites specifically designed for mobile access, at use of various paid and open source services and product for mobile device access, and at general library policies designed to ease the experience of mobile device users. The report presents highly detailed data on the extent of library website traffic accounted for by mobile devices, the impact on library resource use of the deployment of mobile friendly information products from vendors, and much more. More than 60 libraries contributed comprehensive data and insights to the report, and data is broken out by size and type of library and other useful criteria. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: what kind of apps are libraries developing for mobile technologies? How are libraries testing their sites for mobile device access? How many libraries and what kinds of libraries are using for-fee services to enhance mobile device access? What is the impact on use of library resources? What has been the experience of libraries with various open source products to enable mobile access? What are libraries planning for the future in this mission critical area? Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: ? 11.86% of libraries sampled have developed apps specifically for any kind of smartphone user. These apps were mostly devised by libraries outside of the United States, of which 36.36% of libraries have developed such apps. ? 20.34% said that they used both paid and free services to measure mobile device access metrics. ? Academic libraries were much more likely than others to use Google Analytics. ? Public libraries had the highest percentage of total web traffic accounted for by mobile devices, at 17.66%. NISO provides this Year in Review issue on an annual basis to keep readers apprised of all the accomplishments of our community in the past year. "NISO's standards and recommended practices development pipeline has more than 20 active projects," states Nettie Lagace, NISO's Associate Director for Programs. "In 2013, we published two new standards, four recommended practices, and a new technical report. We also issued drafts for public comment of one standard and two recommended practices. Four new projects were launched, two of them funded with grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. These are all described in more detail in this issue of ISQ." "NISO's role as the U.S. Administrator for the ISO TC46 Committee on Information and Documentation and the Secretariat for the subcommittee on Identification and Description ensures that our community has an active role in international standards development as well," explains Cynthia Hodgson, ISQ Managing Editor and a consultant for NISO who helps manage the ISO work. "The work of TC 46 and its five subcommittees during the past year -including the newly revised SC on Document Storage and Conditions for Preservation-is summarized in this issue of ISQ. Additionally, in May 2014, NISO will be hosting, on behalf of ANSI, the annual meeting week of TC46-the first meeting in the U.S. in ten years. A two-page spread in the issue highlights this meeting and its sponsors." "We also are celebrating this summer the 75th anniversary of NISO's founding," states Todd Carpenter, NISO's Executive Director. "The leaders in the library community who came together back in 1939 were visionaries who saw the need for our community to collaboratively solve issues through standards development. In 2009 for our 70th anniversary, we published a timeline of NISO's milestones since its 1939 founding; for this issue of ISQ we have updated the timeline with milestones over the past five years. NISO and its community of volunteers have much to be proud of, as this issue of ISQ clearly illustrates." The Spring issue also contains the annual reference listing of all of NISO's published standards, recommended practices, and technical reports. Information Standards Quarterly is available electronically in open access from the NISO website at: www.niso.org/publications/isq/. ISQ is also available in print format by subscription or in print on demand. Unfortunately, the report from Liblime Koha comes with multiple ISBN numbers separated by SPACES. Not tabs, not pipes, ,not commas - spaces. If there was a reasonable "special character" used to separate the multiple ISBN numbers, I wouldn't have this problem. Many of the ISBN 020$a and 020$z fields legitimately have spaces, because they list formats, prices and publisher names. In most records, the extra information in the 020$a is separated by punctuation, such as an open parenthesis character or a colon, but that's not always the case. Some of the extra information has alphabetic characters, but some of them are numeric. Here are some examples of what I'm getting in the 020$a field of the report: 0675204092 0671204092 9780671204099 0387054995 (New York) 0030810213 Trade ed. 0300015186 (pbk.) 0300015178 : $7.50 0389011592 : 55/- 0444100474 (American Elsevier) 0395109485 (v. 1) 9780395109489 (v. 1) 0395204461 (v. 2) 9780395204467 (v. 2) 026264004X (v. 1) varies 0719004012 : 60/- 3540050892 DM38.00 ($10.50 U.S.) 0521072336(v.1) Most of the extra data is clearly either a price, format, or publisher, but I don't know what the "55/-" "60/-" are supposed to indicate. This is why I haven't been able to figure a way to manpulate this with a large-file text editor. I do have the full version of EmEditor for situations like this, but I'm not much for writing regular expressions. I suppose one way to think of this would be that I need a regex to insert a tab before each continuous 10 or 13 character numeric string. I found that pasting large amounts of data into an OpenOffice spreadsheet takes an enormous amount of time, and ties up a good bit of my processing power for way too long . If someone would suggest another open source spreadsheet program that is better for this, I'd be glad to switch. Of course, if I can't figure out how to get the ISBNs into multiple columns, then the problem of pasting them back into the spreadsheet won't really come up.... Thanks to all who offered help. I will be contacting some folks privately. Not sure if this is the place to ask this. We have a very old EZ-Proxy user validation system, and the web page through which the validation occurs is through a third-party. The issue with this is, it is uncertain whether I can setup logic so that an error message displays if the credentials entered are invalid. How are others setting up this validations? Just curious.
