Whether for personal, social, professional or academic uses, people are using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to communicate information in a map format. Whether it?s using Google Earth to study urban change, or creating Google Map Mashups to deliver library resources, more and more members of society are turning to mapping programs for their visualization needs. With so many using GIS technology in their daily lives, library staff are now more than ever assisting library clients with their mapping queries. This course will introduce students to a variety of mapping tools and GIS technologies such Google Earth and the creation of dynamic KML files; ArcGIS Online and webmap publishing; Google Fusion Tables and geocoding; and GIS fundamentals with geospatial data creation. Students will be able to apply their GIS skills in their reference work, in digitization projects, in webpages, in library instruction, and more. Through hands-on exercises, pre-recorded demonstrations and lectures, students will receive a thorough overview of mapping resources that will enhance and expose their library?s resources. If you plan to read the journal on a computer, a tablet or other e-device (and if you plan to follow links), you're much better off--especially in this case--downloading the single-column online-oriented version at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i7on.pdf [Links may not work from the two-column version. Conversely, some boldface may not show up in the one-column version. This issue has two dozen tables, some of which have smaller type in the two-column version, making the one-column version easier to read.] The two-column version is 24 pages long. The single-column 6x9 version is 45 pages long. The issue consists of a single essay, all original material (except for a few excerpts from publisher pages): Intersections Journals, "Journals" and Wannabes: Investigating the List (pp. 1-24) Jeffrey Beall's 4P (potential, probable, possible predatory) publisher and journal lists total 9,219 journals in early April 2014. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) totals 9.822 journals as of early June 2014. 9,219 is 93.9% of 9,822. But: 90.8% of the journals in DOAJ are not represented in Beall's lists. A paradox? Not really. This special issue does something I don't believe has ever been done before (and is unlikely ever to be done again): looks at every journal from every publisher on Beall's lists to see whether they're plausible predators--whether they could reasonably attract any sensible author. Yes, I even used a control group: members of the OASPA. And two subject groups from DOAJ as secondary control groups. What's here? A discussion of my methodology (of course); the results; the control-group results; the subject-group results; some notes on "the name game" (anyone want to help start up International Journal of International Journals?); a few notes from some "publisher" sites; some comments on fee vs. free; discussing real and possible predators--and a list of potentially predatory characteristics of subscription journal publishers; a couple of other issues; and some conclusions, including a new and faster "Is this a reasonable journal?" methodology. If you read C&I 14.4 or 14.5 (and thousands of you did), I believe you must read this issue, the product of months of research and analysis. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2014-06-09 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As usual there will be more networking, wine and nibbles from 18.00. *Morning options* *a) Tutorial: Metadata management in Sharepoint* (10.00 -12.00) While Sharepoint 2013 offers more metadata capabilities than ever before, the range of options can make it hard to implement the most effective way. Management of controlled vocabularies is a particular challenge. This tutorial will enable you to pick the brains of an experienced consultant, Marc Stephenson of Metataxis. *b) Workshop: Vocabularies and the potential for linkage* (9.30 ? 12.30; now fully booked) Various approaches to the linkage of value vocabularies (KOSs) and/or element set vocabularies (metadata schemas) will be described by Pierre-Yves Vandenbussche (Fujitsu, Ireland), Dan Brickley (Google), Gordon Dunsire and Stella Dextre Clarke, with emphasis on the opportunities as well as the barriers to widespread adoption. After that is a case study from Johan De Smedt and Agis Papantoniou, both of TenForce, that draws on more than one technique. The subsequent discussion will address the prospects for take-up, aiming to help participants with application or development of similar techniques and projects. *Registration fee and booking* Full day, including lunch and a choice of tutorial or workshop: ?120 (or ?70 for members of ISKO, IRSG or DCMI and for full-time students); Afternoon only: ?60 (or ?25 for members of ISKO, IRSG or DCMI and for full-time students). *Booking is open at* < http://www.iskouk.org/events/metadata_June_2014.htm#introduction> *About ISKO UK* ISKO (International Society for Knowledge Organization) is a not-for-profit scientific/professional association with the objective of promoting research and communication in the domain of knowledge organization, within the broad field of information science and related disciplines. Founded in 2007, our UK Chapter has been attracting lively and steadily growing audiences to its afternoon meeting series (see slides and recordings at http://www.iskouk.org/events.htm). Message-ID: Hi- Following an update to Blackboard last fall, we began having a problem with the Library tab on our Blackboard site (I administer the library site but not Blackboard). The problem occurs when you open the library website from within the Blackboard frame; although the exact symptoms vary by browser, generally the main issues are 1) the library page doesn't load and/or 2) links which are not https won't open. This occurs because Blackboard is now a secure environment and doesn't tolerate links within it that are not https. It's also caused by safety features in browsers which will not load pages of mixed content. There are ways around this issue, but they require the user to configure their browsers ...so we've been treating this as "educational issue" rather than a technical one, since the solution seems to be out of our hands. That said, one easy way it could be fixed is to configure the link within Blackboard so the Library site opens in a new window/tab ...however this can't be done because the links that appear in the Blackboard tabs can't be set to do this. I suspect we are not the only ones who have run into this problem. Has it affected your institution? If so, did you find a workaround? Thanks for your reads and replies. The links would not open or would eventually reach an incompatible link. So we worked with the group that administered the Blackboard instances to set the default to be that all links will open in a new window or tab. I believe that what is the default is still within the control of the Blackboard admin, as is whether or not the professor can choose where to display the website. Another problem that happened frequently is that there is/was a character limit on the length of a URL that can be inserted in Blackboard. You can paste in a monster link but the link is truncated and there is no indication that the link has been truncated unless you look at the html code. Of course where the link was truncated determines how the browser responds. So we also recommend that professors use one of the URL shorteners available, i.e. tinyurl.com, goo.gl or bitly.com. **** Gayle Bradbeer Collection Development for Science & Engineering/User Support Librarian Auraria Library (http://library.auraria.edu/) An academic library serving University of Colorado Denver, Metro State & CCD gayle.bradbeer at auraria.edu **** From: Web technologies in libraries [mailto:WEB4LIB at LISTSERV.ND.EDU] On Behalf Of Chris R. To add to the problem, not all the resources we feature on our home page support https, so setting everything to that was not an option. We were told that a Blackboard update released in April solved this issue. I believe they said that it changes how Blackboard loads the items (they load in an iframe instead of a frame), but don?t quote me on that. The problem we are facing now is the blackboard folks don?t want to apply the update. They?d rather have the bugs you know, then create new ones. This is the word from my current institutional IT department: "Lisa, We are aware that this is an issue with Chrome. There are many issues with the Library "tab" as it was originally set up. Opening a webpage from the Blackboard frame from the top tab is problematic as it causes problems opening pages, and in the case of the library, even if the page does open, the use of the databases poses other issues as they do not always load correctly from within the Blackboard frame. We are testing alternative ways to open the library database index page to get around these issues, such as making the link be available from a "Quick Links" menu on the page. This allows for the page to open in a second tab or window. Ultimately, the way Blackboard is constructed, the use of the top frame tabs to open other web pages is not advisable and will always cause problems." My workaround for every class I have ever taught was to have students use Bb in one tab, the library in another. They can use the browser of their choice, they can keep tabs on what they need in Bb with what they are searching. Problem mostly solved. Also, Bb can die by the casting of a 1000 flaming suns but you know, that's a given. -lisa On Wed, Jun 25, 2014 at 12:53 PM, Chris R. Dear all, Happy Social Media Day! Coinciding with social media day (#smday), we thought you might be interested to learn more about our findings from our Twitter party on the use of social media in the library. We have created a 'Story' via Storify of our Twitter Party: https://storify.com/LibraryLantern/use-of-social-media-in-the-library#publicize Thank you to all those who joined us to share thoughts on: * The challenges and opportunities social media presents to the library community * Social media as a teaching tool - the role social media plays in information literacy * User engagement & perception of using social media in the library * Accessibility- how Social Networking Sites are being promoted in the library * Measurability - the impact of social media There were lots of useful and practical tips on using social media in the library that were mentioned at the party that we have scheduled for release once every hour today on #smday via @librarylantern so we hope you find these helpful. We will be consolidating our findings from the Twitter party, various focus groups and an online survey to inform our White Paper on the use of social media in the library.
