You'll find it at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i5.pdf for the 34-page print-oriented two-column version or at http://citesandinsights.info/civ14i5on.pdf for the 65-page 6x9 online/tablet-oriented single-column version. The issue includes two essays: Intersections: Ethics and Access 2: The So-Called Sting (pp. 1-20) John Bohannon wrote a news article in Science that either shows that many open access journals with APC charges have sloppy (or no) peer review...or shows almost nothing at all. This story discusses the article itself, offers a number of responses to it--and then adds something I don't believe you'll find anywhere else: A journal-by-journal test of whether the journals involved would pass a naive three-minute sniff test as to whether they were plausible targets for article submissions without lots of additional checking. Is this really a problem involving a majority of hundreds of journals--or maybe one involving 27% (that is, 17) of 62 journals? Read the story; make up your own mind. Libraries Future Libraries: A Roundup (pp. 21-34) Pretty much what the title suggests--not a sequel to a nineteen-year-old book I coauthored, but a roundup of some thoughts from other folks. A note on formatting I believe I've solved the "emphasis added" problem--that bolded material within quoted passages should now actually appear bolded. In the process, I've also cut the download size (and presumably time) considerably, especially for the print-oriented issue. I've retroactively done the same for all 2014 issues; let me know if you see problems. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2014-04-02 From lsergy at THEALBERTALIBRARY.AB.CA Thu Apr 3 14:23:57 2014 From: lsergy at THEALBERTALIBRARY.AB.CA (Sergy, Lauren) Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2014 12:23:57 -0600 Subject: Fwd: REMINDER: Netspeed 2014 Call for Speakers Message-ID: *Have you submitted your session proposal to Netspeed yet? The original recommended practice, issued in 2010, provided all parties in the information supply chain with straightforward guidance about metadata formatting-focused mainly on journal resources-to ensure the exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers. Building on the initial recommendations, the revision includes the more granular, complex issues that cause problems in metadata supply, including consortia-specific metadata and metadata transfer for open access publications, e-books, and conference proceedings. "The value of the KBART format is that it can be used for both human-readable and machine-readable purposes and can be a low cost approach to effective knowledge base metadata transfer for publishers," states Magaly Bascones, Data Manager at Jisc Collections and Co-chair of the KBART Working Group. "Since the first Recommended Practice was issued, over 75 publishers and content providers have endorsed KBART and demonstrated their commitment to good quality metadata provision. With implementation of the KBART recommendations, users can be assured that the providers' metadata is trusted and has the required level of granularity without the burdensome task of title-by-title checking. All of the existing endorsements will go through an updating procedure to ensure conformance with the revised Recommended Practice." "The experience of endorsing publishers and feedback from a survey of libraries and consortia identified the areas of focus for this expanded KBART revision," explains Chad Hutchens, University of Wyoming Libraries Head of Digital Collections and Digital Resources Librarian, and Co-chair of the KBART Working Group. "Historically, it has been difficult for libraries and linking vendors to obtain accurate title list data for customized consortia packages and the new KBART recommendations encourage content providers to establish metadata feeds specific to these packages. The recommendations also address some of the unique needs for open access publications, e-books, and conference proceedings by updating some of the required and optional metadata fields included in a KBART transmission." "The KBART project will now be transferred to Standing Committee status within NISO," states Todd Carpenter, NISO Executive Director. "This Committee will be responsible for managing the endorsement process, providing ongoing education and promotion of KBART, and maintaining the Information Hub on the NISO website that provides supporting materials about KBART-including the KBART Glossary, endorsement information, a registry of knowledge base supply chain contacts, and background information on OpenURL and knowledge bases." It's called "Enough PHP To Be Dangerous," and will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 a few blocks from the convention center. It's for people who don't know much about programming. You'll learn the basics of PHP, the most common web-programming language. Participants will compare a variety of social media pages for a variety of libraries, in order to think about what works and what doesn?t in using social media to do outreach for such institutions. They will also look at different ways of evaluating an effective presence and devise their own performance metrics to measure effectiveness over time. Participants will also draft social media policies (if they don't have them) or revisit existing policies based upon what they have learned and what goals they have for their social media presence. The metrics and policies should be related to each other, and will be resources that can be taken into the workplace at the conclusion of the course. The format of the course is hands-on and interactive, and asks participants to actively engage with the instructor and each other as they discuss effective social media strategies and construct policies. Is it possible for a library to use more than one aggregator, but present the results on one page? My idea is that the e-book search would be forwarded to the library's own server where a script would forward the search to multiple aggregators. The results would be returned from the aggregators to the script, perhaps as XML, and the script would then sort the results before presenting them to the browser of the client PC. Is this feasible? Any advice would be much appreciated. URL: From jeffw at PITT.EDU Tue Apr 15 08:47:37 2014 From: jeffw at PITT.EDU (Wisniewski, Jeffrey A) Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2014 08:47:37 -0400 Subject: academic libraries: effectively communicating withy faculty, on and off line Message-ID: Apologies in advance for the long post?. Hi, We here at Pitt have just engaged an external communications consultant to help us discover ways to more effectively communicate with faculty, both online and offline. We've begun this process because we have discovered, through a number of channels but primarily an annual survey we conduct on campus, that while in general our faculty are highly satisfied with the library, our collections, our website, and the services of which they aware, they indicated low awareness of a number of services we had hoped would be higher. We don't see this as a website usability issue. We tested our new site with numerous faculty, and the results across the board were positive. The problem, though, is that while they could effectively navigate to a page that, for example, describes a service we offer that pays their fees to publish in an open access journal, they didn't know such a service existed so would never had though to look for it on our website in the first place. In addition to a series of focus groups with faculty from various departments and at varying career levels, our consultant will be conducting an environmental scan of select academic library websites of peer institutions, as well as any other we identify, which is where you come in. Has anyone out there undertaken a similar initiative? Does anything think, or better yet know, they do an effective job of communicating with faculty online? Point me to your site! Thanks in advance. This webinar offers a short critical introduction to Linked Data by positioning this approach within the global evolution of data modeling, allowing an understanding of the advantages but also of the limits of RDF. After this conceptual introduction, the fundamental importance of data quality in the context of Linked Data is underlined by applying data profiling techniques with the help of OpenRefine. Message-ID: Hello all. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts about the following. Let's assume The following. That we already have a site running using Wordpress. A nice template we get with some plug ins. Banner rotating, security, edit, seo, simple ones I guess. It worked fine but with the grow of the web page we are facing a problem since the ajax in the ads (used by the plug in), the too much javascript on the page with the plug ins and the one used by the theme and with more visitors the page is getting daily ,now the site consumes, according to the isp we use, LOT of resources , more than the resources allowed by the isp on the level of account we have as a shared service. So we have to move to another level of service and use VPS virtual service or the smallest of a dedicated one. With the stats we have of the site, we can confirm the use of resources and yes, it is not normal, the iste s not hacked , everything works fine, just at times the overload is very big and that is creating the problem. I know there are options for hosting companies specialized on Wordpress and even Wordpress itself offers VIP services. We know those services exist and we are evaluating what we could afford it. We know that we can also do load balancing maybe with some tools, or even simple dns services. When talking about the consumption of resources with some of the collages we were talking about doing something strange maybe, and here is when I ask for your comments. Our needs: - Being able to update easily as with Wordpress, different levels of user, several users, restrict sections. All like Wordpress does. - Being able to have responsive web pages that detect movile devices or desktop and adjust to different resolutions (like our theme does it under Wordpress) that's all. (yes we know drupal, joomla, and others could do the job also but we believe that at the end we would be finishing with the same load on the server) So we were thinking that maybe could be possible to construct all using a tool that give us as a result simple html pages, that emulates, the best it could , the look and feel of a complex Wordpress site. Yes, we know that could be lot of static web pages. In fact using a tool for editing HTML we could emulate the look and feel now. Besides our page it won't change frequently on menus, sections, etc but it will grow in content. Do you know tools that we can explore that allows to do that? In a framework or package ,open source or commercial? that acts like wordpress BUT that constructs simple and fast web pages , like plain HTML and do not abuse of Javascript , Ajax, etc and does not consume too many resources? Even that works on a lan and not online could work even when that means to FTP the changes every time. Yes, it sounds stupid maybe but we can explore possibilities. Yes, not too fancy and elegant like wordpress but with the same results using static web pages? I know this could be solved with money , getting a cheap dedicated service for $150-350 USD per month. Or contracting shared service with a professional Wordpress service provider but issue is that this project will involve at the end several web sites of non profit institutions with very few financial resources. So if we can give them functionality like Wordpress in their old equipment and low bandwidth they could get it would be great. NO way to get extra resources , for now, since this is for institutions in Mexico and Central America. Any comments are welcomed maybe off-line if the subject is of not interest on the list. Thanks for the time and I am sorry for the long email. I thought there were still a few free webmail apps out there that didn't require a mobile phone/text option for a security code, but did not have luck helping elderly gentleman yesterday (his Hotmail/Outlook account now requires a mobile; he doesn't have one and using his land line did not work). When I tried to help him create a new account on Yahoo, Aol, etc., they now all ask for a cell phone number when you sign up. The only one that didn't was mail.com, but when we tried to create a new account for him on that service, it kept giving the message to try again later. Thanks in advance for any advice/tips... Yes you are right the problem is the plug ins we use. In a "normal" environment and a dedicated server it will be nor problem. This test site was done mainly to measure the load since it has to run on low end servers. Not so powerful ones, old equipment from donations. The idea is not to move to another CMS but to try to manage all on static pages, like he old times but trying to emulate , the best we could, the functionality of Wordpress on beimng able to update easily with different levels of users and have response web pages for movile devices. The latest is not a problem but will imply extra work. We will continue looking alternatives for a couple of days and then we decide the path to follow. Thanks for the time and help. A new "medium" instance should be plenty, and with a three-year commit, it should be under $25/Mo. You are likely going to run into this kind of issue with your current commodity host no matter what you do. The other alternative might be to go with a node.js-based static site generator. You can build this with Grunt.js or, if you want something already built and expandable, perhaps Harp or Jeckll . You might want to take a look at the self-proclaimed definitive list of 240 static site generators at . If you want to learn a new language (or work in a familiar one) there is something for everyone there. I believe this is the terminate signal for Apache. Every Monday, I restart Apache 2 and everything is fine. I suspect there is a chron task responsible for this. There are three weekly chron tasks which I did not add and I am not sure what they do. They are 'placeholder', 'cvs' and 'smsclient'. Were they added during the installation of Greenstone? Kovacs) Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2014 12:39:15 -0400 Subject: Looking for Web design projects for LIS590LWL for UIUC GSLIS LEEP Summer Semester 2014 Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, I'm happily, again, teaching LIS590LWL/LW2 Web Design and Construction for Organizations" for UIUC LEEP again this Summer 2014 Semester. We cover HTML5, CSS3, Usability, Accessibility, User-Centered Design principles, Technology options, etc. I require each student to work with a 'client' to redesign an existing Web site or create a new Web site for a non-profit organization, preferably a special, academic, school, or public library, or library organization, but other organizations or even for profit small business sites are welcomed. The Summer 2014 semester is June 14 - August 7, 2014 These are Library School students working through Distance Learning who are just beginning with Web Design, HTML5 and CSS3. What we are looking for is small scale redesign projects, e.g., one area of a larger site - or a new design for a special patron group. Students work for you will be an example or dummy site constructed with simple HTML5 and CSS3, that you may choose to use or not use. They will also choose an open source CMS or Template site as a secondary option to implement your example or dummy site design. That also you may choose to use or not use. (e.g, Wordpress, Googlesites, Weebly) Please NOTE: We cannot work with anyone who is looking for Web development (e.g., PHP/Python programming, Mysql or other database management, server maintenance, proprietary content management systems, etc.) and We cannot work with those who merely want link-checking, spell-checking, and general clerical work. I cannot guarantee that any of my students will choose your projects. Also, some larger scale projects, the students may form teams to work on them. Students may also choose the library they currently work in or a non-profit organization known to them to work with. So, if you would like to be on the list of projects for my students to consider please email me with the following information: What I need from you: 1. Contact person(s) with email and telephone numbers (this would be the 'client' that students are expected to interview and interact with cooperatively to come up with design options) 2. The URL of the current Web site (if there is one - otherwise URL of the overall site associated with your organization) 3. Brief description of what you would like to have done with the site. 4. A commitment by the contact person(s) to be available by email or Webchat from June 14 - August 7, 2014 to work with my students during the Summer Semester.Availability of a contact person is critical. I will respond to you with additional questions and/or whether your project fits our scope in terms of time and expertise of students and verify you want to be on the list. Thank you! There are three weekly chron tasks which I did not add and I am not sure what they do. They are 'placeholder', 'cvs' and 'smsclient'. Were they added during the installation of Greenstone? This does sound like a cron job, but you may not have found all of them. Unfortunately, there are many places to consider ... Cron jobs of user root: $ sudo crontab -l $ cat /etc/crontab # and look there for more directories, e.g.: $ ls -la /etc/cron.daily/ $ ls -la /etc/cron.weekly/ $ ls -la /etc/cron.monthly/ $ ls -la /etc/cron.d/ Cron jobs of user www-data (who runs Apache on Debian/Ubuntu): $ sudo crontab -u www-data -l There might me more cron jobs below /var/spool/cron, e.g.: $ sudo ls -la /var/spool/cron/crontabs/ It's a mess, I know! Methods and tools for metadata reconciliation and enrichment, such as Named-Entity Recognition (NER), are illustrated with the help of the same software. This webinar will refer to case-studies with real-life data which can be re-used by participants to continue to explore OpenRefine at their own pace after the webinar. The case-studies have been developed in the context of the handbook "Linked Data for Libraries, Archives and Museums", which will be published by Facet Publishing in June 2014 (http://www.facetpublishing.co.uk/title.php?id=9641&category_code=102). PRESENTERS: Seth van Hooland is an assistant professor at the Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he leads the Master in Information Science. After a career in the private sector for a digitization company, he obtained his PhD in information science at ULB in 2009. He is currently teaching a special course on linked data at the Information School of the University of Washington. He is also active as a consultant for both public and private organizations. Ruben Verborgh is a researcher in semantic hypermedia at Ghent University ? iMinds, Belgium, where he obtained his PhD in computer science in 2014. He explores the connection between semantic web technologies and the web's architectural properties, with the ultimate goal of building more intelligent clients. Along the way, he has become fascinated by linked data, REST/hypermedia, web APIs and related technologies. He is the co-author of a book on OpenRefine and several publications on web-related topics in international journals.
