I may provide more questions than answers, but I'm trying to help :-) I'm interested in what's going on behind the scenes. I went to the site you listed (Blood-orange...) using a Windows PC and IE 10, on a large screen. It displayed fine, spacially. I won't deal with pixel count or resolution here. When compared with the presentation in Adobe Reader, the browser showed considerable differences. I could see that the server was sending it as a PNG, so I saved it as a PNG. Viewed in Windows Photo Viewer, it appeared different yet. On the iPad (fairly current), it didn't show the picture at all! I can't explain this. I took apart the PDF (using my own tools) to see what it contained for the picture. The picture is 1480 by 1041 pixels, compressed using DCT compression (which is essentially JPG compression). No problems so far. But you might achieve better results if you told your converter to present it as a JPG instead of a PNG, if that is an option. The "colorspace" of image is "DeviceRGB". In PDF internal syntax, that means it is non-standardized color - it has no color profile. That means it will likely always be subject to some variation in color presentation. You may want to scan or produce this image using a color profile. But I believe the majority of the problem is in the converter, which seems simply to not be handling the colors correctly. The single-column 6x9 "online reading version" is 65 pages long. In fact, most of the regular version also fits into a 6" width; it's made up of book samples that didn't reduce neatly to the narrow column of the two-column version. The issue consists of one big essay in six smaller portions plus an introduction: The Front: Books, Books and (Books?) pp. 1-48 It's all about books--specifically, Cites & Insights Books for libraries and librarians: What may be happening with older books, two important new books, one *potential* new book and two new combinations of old material. Weeding the Virtual Bookstore pp. 2-3 Some of the existing Cites & Insights Books may go out of print (that is, be removed from potential production) shortly. This section explains why, which books are involved and why--if you actually want one of them--you need to act soon. Your Library Is...: A Collection of Public Library Sayings pp. 3-10 An inspiring and interesting tour through what America's public libraries choose as their mottoes and slogans on their websites, based on a complete scan of all 9,000+ libraries (or at least those for which I could find websites). 1,137 unique mottoes and slogans, plus 88 mottoes and slogans shared by 205 libraries. General comments, price and availability (this one's available as an $8.99 PDF!) are followed by the Cs: Sayings from libraries in California, Colorado and Connecticut, roughly 9.5 of the 157 text pages in the book. $4 to $1: Public Library Benefits and Budgets, Vol. 1, Libraries by Size pp. 10-24 Designed as a tool to help librarians and Friends tell their library's story to retain and improve funding, this book also provides a detailed picture of public libraries in FY2011 and how usage changed from FY2009. The section includes notes on how this study differs from *Give Us a Dollar..., *followed by portions of Chapter 1 and all of Chapter 4. $4 to $1: Public Library Benefits and Budgets, Vol. 2, Libraries by State pp. 24-38 This book does not yet exist. The section includes notes on what it would include and the circumstances under which it will be completed (basically, sales of the two books just mentioned), followed by the draft version of what would be the first two of 49 state profiles (DC and Hawaii, with single public libraries, get much shorter profiles), those for Alabama and Alaska. The Compleat Give Us a Dollar... Vol. 1 pp. 38-44 This book provides the most in-depth discussion of public library benefits and budgets you're likely to find, combining all but Chapter 20 of *Give Us a Dollar and We'll Give You Back Four* with graphs and commentary to flesh out the discussion. After a brief introduction, there's an excerpt consisting of roughly the first half of Chapter 4. The inCompleat Give Us a Dollar... pp. 44-48 This massive book (433 8.5" x 11" pages) combines all of the text from *Give Us a Dollar... *with all of the graphs and commentary--except for multicolor line graphs that won't reproduce well in a black-and-white book. (There are no such graphs in Volume 2 of *The Compleat..., *so this volume is a complete print replacement for that volume, but an incomplete replacement for volume 1.) In addition to commentary and pricing, there's an excerpt consisting of the section for Alabama. Do note that there are two ways to acquire *Your Library Is...*: You can buy the $8.99 PDF ebook (6x9, no DRM) or $16.99 paperback--or you can get a special deluxe PDF version by contributing at least $50 to *Cites & Insights.* (What makes the special deluxe version special? It adds the front and back mosaic covers from the paperback edition as first and last pages.) ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-09-03 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We're also wondering if we could simply create an Access database with a form on the frontend that we could all share via a network drive. I hope you don't mind, but I will be sharing my responses to your questions on the web4lib list. Several others have been asking similar questions off-list so I think there is value in sharing these answers with the list. We are grateful for your interest in our research. We are still gathering data so I don't have any results to share yet. We will share our results with all the lists to which we sent the survey. It will have to be after the Internet Librarian Conference, so look for the results in November. We included a bunch of software programs in the survey, but it is by no means an exhaustive list. If your library tested another program (including the many open-source/GPL products) please select the "other" category and specify the name of the product. Others on the list have asked why we did not include specific project management techniques (waterfall, agile, etc). We wanted the survey to assume little formal knowledge of project management techniques so we used the most general terms we could. Respondents can get more specific by selecting "other" and filling in a short answer. Others also asked if we are interested in individuals use of project management software or institutional use. We're focused on what tools institutions or groups use, not so much individual librarians. This is easier if you use Active Directory; but if not, it can still be done at each individual computer by editing Group Policy. Included: * Large amounts of secure, private storage plus unlimited public space. * Simple, institution-wide management and monitoring of all research outputs for institution staff with subject categorisation per department * Access controlled team sharing and collaborative spaces with the ability to add notes and comments to files. * An institutional dashboard with detailed metrics on the impact of publicly available data * All research outputs can be made citable, visualisable, embeddable and trackable with one click. * The ability to push research to any internal repository. * Institution?wide compliance with open data requirements of funding bodies. * Dedicated support team. With new funder mandates, researchers as well as institutions are faced with a research data management problem. figshare for institutions provides a solution for both of these stakeholders by catering to their individual needs. For researchers, they are given large amounts of private storage space, to better manage their research outputs in the cloud. The intuitive interface, which academics rarely get to see, allows them to quickly upload their data and just as easily find the files again by filtering on keywords and the type of file. When it comes to complying with mandates, these research outputs are then just one click away from being made openly and persistently available, as well as citable and trackable via a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). These publicly available files are aggregated at the departmental and institutional level, automatically providing a self-populating institutional repository with reporting capabilities. This survey will close Friday Sept. 13. Thanks for putting up with our cross & re-posting!**** ** ** Dear Colleagues,**** **** Please take the survey linked below to help us gather data on how libraries manage their many projects. We want to know how libraries manage, keep track of progress, and collaborate on projects. Survey results will show a snapshot of project management techniques used, project management software strengths and weaknesses, and what types of library projects are a good fit for which project management software.**** **** Please help us answer these questions by taking an online survey (estimated <10 minutes to complete). Findings will be reported at the Internet Librarian 2013 and CARL 2014 conferences, with the potential for future journal publications. Your responses will be anonymous, your participation is voluntary, and there are no foreseen risks in volunteering for this study.**** **** To take the survey please click on this link **** **** In case you are still on the fence about taking our survey, let us define what we mean by project management software and techniques. Project Management is a set of techniques used heavily in business, construction, and software development to describe and monitor work on large projects that involve multiple people over a long period of time. The various techniques help keep track of goals, tasks, deadlines, responsible individuals, progress toward completion, budget, and many more factors that contribute to project success.**** **** Within the library, a project might be implementing a discovery service, marketing a program to freshmen, renovating the building, redesigning the website, or weeding the humanities section. We want to hear from individuals who have contributed to projects in libraries. Please take our survey so we can learn from your collective experience.**** **** Thank you for your participation!**** **** Margot Hanson, Instruction & Outreach Librarian, California Maritime Academy **** Annis Lee Adams, E-Resources Librarian, Golden Gate University**** Andrew Tweet, Librarian, William Jessup University**** Kevin Pischke, Library Director, William Jessup University**** **** ** ** ** ** If you have any questions about the survey please contact:**** Margot Hanson: mhanson at csum.edu, 707-654-1091**** or**** California Maritime Academy Institutional Review Board**** IRB # CMA-IRB2013-014 (Exempt status) ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-09-11 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Gale Artemis provides an unprecedented, seamless research experience that helps students find a starting point, search across a wide array of materials and points in time, and discover new ways to analyze information. Gale Artemis not only integrates full-text content with metadata and subject indexing, it also provides workflow tools to analyze information. Here are just a few of the revolutionary ways Gale Artemis will change the way users research: Subject Indexing. The addition of detailed subject indexing aids content discovery across collections, drawing connections that simple search and retrieve cannot achieve?revealing related concepts and terms to expand thinking and exploration. Term Clusters. Users can see topics that commonly occur in relation to their search term, which helps uncover hidden connections, or can be a helpful starting point in the early stages of research. Term Frequency. This allows users to see the frequency of their search term(s) in the content over time, which can suggest the importance of particular concepts during given periods. Now, users can ask new questions of historical data e.g. Is there a connection between ?bread? and ?revolution?? Akers / Terri Pedersen Summey Academic librarians often face challenges reaching out to students and gathering feedback about library resources and services. As Kuhlthau (2004) discovered, the information seeking or research process contains a strong affective element. As students proceed through the research process, they experience a diverse range of emotions, including anxiety, isolation, and frustration. Students may be intimidated by the library and often perceive that they are the only individuals having difficulties. This perception might inhibit students from asking for assistance, especially from library staff who appear to be older, more knowledgeable, and more confident. Because of this apprehension, students may avoid the library and not be aware of the library resources and, more importantly, the services available to them. Although librarians work hard to ?spread the news? about library resources and services, they interact mainly with other faculty outside of the library. Interactions with students are often in a more formal library instruction setting or one-to-one at the service desks within the library when students are brave enough to approach someone. Often, students may seek out other students, including student employees, as informal peer mentors. ?When a student sees a classmate working in the library, there is an existing relationship upon which communication can be built. If the questions posed by our anxious student are met with good answers, a bridge to the library has been built? (Baird 2006, 4). This project explores current decision-making and practices underpinning the implementation or non-adoption of Web 2.0/ social media in libraries and archives. An anticipated outcome of this study is the development of a snapshot of key strategic issues and concerns faced by those involved in the planning, development, management and maintenance of digital cultural heritage. Our overall aim is to highlight issues, critical (success) factors and challenges identified, to offer suggestions for the way forward and to invite further discussion. The following people are involved in this research: Dr Chern Li Liew (Principal investigator) ChernLi.Liew at vuw.ac.nz Dr Gillian Oliver (Associate investigator) Gillian.Oliver at vuw.ac.nz Vanessa King (Research Assistant) Vanessa.King at vuw.ac.nz If you have any questions or would like to receive further information about the project, please contact ChernLi.Liew at vuw.ac.nz (Principal investigator). Now, there has been a push to reexamine the importance that tenure committees and journal reviewers assign to journal impact factors. Earlier this year, a group of concerned scientists and journal publishers signed an open letter known as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) to encourage review boards and tenure committees to ?eliminate the use of journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, in funding, appointment, and promotion considerations,? and to encourage the development of alternative metrics (altmetrics) to measure a scientist?s research contributions. A further aim is to propose the roles that Jisc and others might play in this system in future. Scope and focus 1.1.2 The general scope of this work is the creation and exploitation of citation data derived from peer reviewed academic research articles. However, the citation of datasets is specifically excluded. While bibliographic metadata associated with the referencing and referenced outputs is clearly relevant, it is not the focus of the work. Approaches to exploitation of citation data are also not the focus of the review, except in as much that this might increase or change the demand for different types of citation data. Assessment of scholarship is a critical component of the research process, impacting everything from which projects get funded to who gains promotion and tenure to which publications gain prominence. Since Eugene Garfield's pioneering work in the 1960s, much of the work on research assessment has been based upon citations, a valuable measure but one that has failed to keep pace with online reader behavior, network interactions with content, social media, and online content management. Exemplified by innovative new platforms like ImpactStory, a new movement is growing to develop more robust alternative metrics?called altmetrics?that complement traditional citation metrics. NISO will first hold several in-person and virtual meetings to identify critical areas where altmetrics standards or recommended practices are needed and then convene a working group to develop consensus standards and/or recommended practices. The project is funded through a $207,500 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Citation analysis lacks ways to measure the newer and more prevalent ways that articles generate impact such as through social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, or blogs," explains Nettie Lagace, NISO's Associate Director for Programs. "Additionally, new forms of scholarly outputs, such as datasets, software tools, algorithms, or molecular structures are now commonplace, but they are not easily?if at all?assessed by traditional citation metrics. These are two among the many concerns the growing movement around altmetrics is trying to address." "For altmetrics to move out of its current pilot and proof-of-concept phase, the community must begin coalescing around a suite of commonly understood definitions, calculations, and data sharing practices," states Todd Carpenter, NISO Executive Director. "Organizations and researchers wanting to apply these metrics need to adequately understand them, ensure their consistent application and meaning across the community, and have methods for auditing their accuracy. We must agree on what gets measured, what the criteria are for assessing the quality of the measures, at what granularity these metrics are compiled and analyzed, how long a period the altmetrics should cover, the role of social media in altmetrics, the technical infrastructure necessary to exchange this data, and which new altmetrics will prove most valuable. The creation of altmetrics standards and best practices will facilitate the community trust in altmetrics, which will be a requirement for any broad-based acceptance, and will ensure that these altmetrics can be accurately compared and exchanged across publishers and platforms." The exhaustive study covers a myriad ofissues including: cataloging and metadata, marketing and distribution, use ofimage management software and services, revenues and sales strategy, promotional uses of images, use of images on social media sites such asFacebook and on image sharing sites such as Instagram and Pinterest. The study also looks at the type of images maintained andhow these images were acquired, through, for example, in-house scanning, outsourced scanning, digital creation at the outset, or purchased from acommercial vendor or other means. Thereport describes the type of digitization standards used, the use ofcrowdsourcing, spending on rights and licensing, methods of image retrievalavailable to end users, permissions protocols, discovery and access tools, digital preservation policies and more. Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: 97% of higher education institutions in the sample considered in-house scanning to be their most popular means of image acquisition. Only 9.52 percent of survey participants, or 6 out of 63, provide screen shots for retrieval. 57.14 percent of all survey participants provide high resolution images for retrieval. This is more popular among museums/government agencies, where 75 percent provide such high resolution images. 26.98 percent of all survey participants provide collection access through Flickr, Among the 27 participants that use standardized content descriptions, 44.44 percent use CCO (Cataloging Cultural Objects), 29.63 percent use DACS (Describing Archives Content Standards), and the remaining 25.93 percent use MARC. The report also covers the estimated time it takes to create a LibGuide and its impact on library productivity. The study furnishes insights on the number of librarians in an organization who use LibGuides, the support that they receive, and the marketing of LibGuides to faculty and students, among many other issues. The study also points out the most admired LibGuides, the most used, and gives hard data on the number of LibGuides from institutions other than their own that libraries are using. Have libraries considered alternatives to LibGuides? How satisfied are libraries with LibGuides? What kinds of LibGuides are libraries developing and how are they encouraging students and faculty to use them? Just a few of the study?s main findings are that: ? The growth rate over the past year in the stock of LibGuides for the private colleges in the sample was an astounding 63%. ? College libraries with a budget in excess of $3 million maintained a mean of 109 LibGuides. ? 42.11% of the libraries sampled have one or more individuals whose primary job it is to create LibGuides or other kinds of research guides. ? Unfortunately this will have to wait for a survey of students themselves which we do every few years or for academic studies, two of which you cite. This study does offer some data from survey participants about end use; data on frequency of use offers at least some insight into ultimate worth, as do, for example, journal use and journal citation statistics. However, this study is more about the immediate operational impact on library management which is quite considerable and not generally covered in library science studies, and more our niche. The study also points out the most admired LibGuides, the most used, and gives hard data on the number of LibGuides from institutions other than their own that libraries are using. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how many libraries are using LibGuides as their library website? What are library plans for LibGuides in the future? Have libraries considered alternatives to LibGuides? How satisfied are libraries with LibGuides? What kinds of LibGuides are libraries developing and how are they encour! aging students and faculty to use them? Just a few of the study?s main findings are that: ? The growth rate over the past year in the stock of LibGuides for the private colleges in the sample was an astounding 63%. ? College libraries with a budget in excess of $3 million maintained a mean of 109 LibGuides. ? 42.11% of the libraries sampled have one or more individuals whose primary job it is to create LibGuides or other kinds of research guides. ? Only 3.51% of the libraries sampled have measured or studied how much staff time it takes to develop a typical LibGuide. ? 31.58% of the libraries offer courses, seminars, or otherwise provide formal training in use of LibGuides to library staff. Following the University of Toronto iSchool Institute?s first, and very successful, symposium, Creative Making in Libraries & Museums [snip] we are pleased to introduce the second symposium! Libraries are expanding their strategies in education and learning. Some public libraries are offering online credit courses and certificates. Some are offering credit recovery for high school drop-outs. Many are expanding the economic vitality and capacity of their communities. Things a re changing. Some academic libraries are exploring the role of the library in MOOCs and e-learning and distance education. And our schools for the professional education of librarians are diving into free MOOCs for continuing education. Is your library system considering and exploring these innovations and opportunities? Massive open online courses, or MOOCs, are a new type of college class based on Internet lecture videos. As the New Yorker magazine says, ?a MOOC is ?massive? because it?s designed to enroll tens of thousands of students. It?s ?open? because, in theory, anybody with an Internet connection can sign up. ?Online? refers not just to the delivery mode but to the style of communication: much, if not all, of it is on the Web. And ?course,? of course, means that assessment is involved?assignments, tests, an ultimate credential. When you take moocs, you?re expected to keep pace. Your work gets regular evaluation. In the end, you?ll pass or fail or, like the vast majority of enrollees, just stop showing up.? In the past two years, Harvard, M.I.T., Caltech, and the University of Texas have together pledged tens of millions of dollars to mooc development. Many other schools, from U.C. Berkeley to Princeton, have similarly climbed aboard. But how are the students supported? This two day event features speakers immersed in MOOCs as well as those struggling to create strategies for their academic, college, school and public libraries to support students who are learning more and more online and faculty who are faced with new ways of teaching and assessing students.
