Elegant - but I need a solution wherein we can charge for scans and other uses. I was hoping an MFD would hold the answers. I'm sorry to hear that the Toshiba eStudio device sounds difficult to use for printing from a USB.

For scanning to USB, I purchased an HP 6800 Pro MFC. After setting it up, I removed the duplexer and the paper tray so nobody could use it as a printer or copy machine. I tired feeding a piece of paper through to see what would happen, and without the duplexer, the paper shreds as it makes its way out the back of the machine. I turned the wireless off and it is not connected to a computer nor to the network. So a patron walks up to the machine, inserts their USB drive into the MFC, and it will scan to their documents to the USB drive. An inexpensive and simple scanning solution.

Thanks! The USB capability is not a 'billed' service on our lease.
The way the supplier explained it - only those functions that result in a use of consumables are billed.
We do not have sufficient patrons using ledger paper to justify the investment to a new coin op. It is on my back-burner for budgeting... but not soon.
So, scanning to USB is not billable on our monthly count.
Although, printing from a USB drive, is billable. (We do not allow this - most patrons are unaware of the function).
... I'm not worried about 99% of patrons even knowing how to do it... as I can't figure out how after about 3 minutes of nosing in the menus :)

We leased a Toshiba eStudio 206L.
It is a rather versatile machine - at the moment, we are limiting ourselves (no FAX modem, no Internet drop).
We went from a 13 year old Xerox to the new machine...
Due to patron demand, my initial RFP included requirements for scanning capability and a duplex platen (auto feeder).
We also requested triple tray capacity (letter, legal, ledger).
Do ask about your coin op device - as ledger is physically the size of two sheets of letter... older coin ops will only bill at 1-sheet.
Newer coin ops will allow multiple pricing. Just something to ask when the office shop asks "do you hope to reuse your existing coin acceptor?"
Also, inquire about charging for print from USB. (Due to inability to charge [age of coin op] we do not allow this).

What kind of copier, and model, are you using, Jim?
We are looking into what we can get to allow scans to USB, and to print standard file formats from USB, and to allow emailing over the wifi, if possible, without us running a server.

Whitehall Township Public Library recently leased a new copier.
This copier has the ability to scan to USB drive.
The scans are not billed under the contract (only jobs that use consumables are billed as a copy).
With no billing on the scans, we do not charge for patrons to scan to USB drive.
The copier has the ability to scan from 100dpi to over 600dpi.
We have it set to default at 150dpi...
I don't see why I couldn't bump it up to 600dpi for a patron, if they asked.
The size is limited to ledger originals.

I assume you're talking about scanning materials from your own collections. If not, please clarify on the list.

Our scans are done at publication quality. We have an ATIZ set up with wide angle lenses, and we also have a scan-back camera for oversized originals.
