You can still sign up for the event at:. http://opf-digital-forensics.eventbrite.co.uk/ *Agenda* The full agenda can be seen here: http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/KB/Agenda+-+Disk+Images+and+Digital+Forensics+%28Copenhagen%29 . *Why attend?* - Learn how to assess, analyse and preserve your digital data - Find out about different digital forensic tools and techniques, and how to apply them - Work with some of the leading experts and developers in the field - Discover how other organisations are working with digital forensics tools through practical use cases - Contribute your ideas and experience to the group, and help to build the knowledge base of 'Digital Preservation and Data Curation Requirements and Solutions' ( http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/REQ/Digital+Preservation+and+Data+Curation+Requirements+and+Solutions ) The best way of learning practical preservation skills is by getting hands-on experience of actually doing it. By the end of the event you'll have solved some preservation challenges, learnt new skills you can take back to the office/library/archive, and will have become part of a supportive digital preservation community. Take a look at this recent blog from Bram van der Werf, Executive Director of the OPF, about the importance of hackathons: http://www.openplanetsfoundation.org/blogs/2013-04-28-hack-preserve-increasing-your-organisational-competence . When asked what they liked best about previous hackathons, attendees said: *"It was very good to see the practical aspect of getting things done, rather than just theorising"* *"The discussion sessions were really useful. The speakers and facilitators were really passionate about their work"* *"I liked the goal-oriented sharing of issues and contexts, and the instant write-up in the wiki"* For more information about the event To find out more, visit: http://wiki.opf-labs.org/display/KB/2013-05-15+OPF+Hackathon+-+A+Practical+Approach+to+Disk+Images+and+Digital+Forensics+%28Copenhagen%29 . We have published continuously since August 1990. We are now looking for additional contributors. As a contributor, you would be expected to contribute one or more citations every month or so. We understand that other obligations or vacations may intervene, but you will be expected to contribute on a regular basis to remain part of the team. Citations should be brief but informative, be evaluative and insightful in nature, and -- if possible -- exhibit wit and humor. The point is to provide enough of the meat of a given article or book so that they may either gain enough from that alone or be intrigued to read the entire piece. Citations are contributed by filling out a web form, which is then reflected back in an email to the entire Cites team, mostly to prevent duplicates. Cites are due each month near the end of the month and the issue is published without fail by the last day of the month. In particular months (e.g., December), and at the discretion of the editor, the cites deadline might occur earlier in the month than usual. For examples see http://currentcites.org/ . To apply, please send an email to me describing why you think you should be selected to join the team. You might think of this as a side-effect issue, as both pieces grow out of work done for the Open Access preconference I did at the Washington/Oregon Library Associations joint conference last week: The Front: The Big Deal and the Damage Done: Available Now (pg.1) *The Big Deal and the Damage Done* ($9.99 PDF ebook , $16.50 paperback ) is a study of U.S. academic library spending between 2000 and 2010 for current serials, books (and all other acquisitions), and everything else--showing the effects of Big Deals and other constantly-rising serials prices. It looks at libraries by size, by sector and by Carnegie classification. The damage done? Primarily to the humanities and other fields that depend on monographs, to the ability of libraries to maintain the record of human creativity--and to library flexibility to do anything *except* write checks for current serials. (20% off through May 2, 2012, using code SILEO at checkout.) This roundup looks at current issues in defining the terms, CC BY, the Gold and the Green, problems, OA in general, specific recent developments, the White House actions, OA in the humanities and social sciences, direct actions and libraries. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-05-01 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A couple of quick thoughts: There are Wordpress tutorials on youtube, which I find much easier than reading the Wordpress wiki. Search for "Wordpress tutorial" and you'll find a lot of helpful information. Perhaps the teachers can sift through and pick out the ones that will be most helpful to their students. As for self-publishing, I would recommend starting at the Amazon how-to page: http://www.amazon.com/gp/seller-account/mm-summary-page.html/187-5896169-6050760?ie=UTF8&ld=AZFooterSelfPublish&topic=200260520 This will give you enough background information so that you will be better able to discuss the process and search for alternatives. The service, which uses open-source software originally developed and implemented at Cornell University, operates by harvesting data about researcher interests, activities, and accomplishments from academic, administrative, professional, and funding sources. Using a built-in, editable ontology for describing things such as People, Courses, and Publications, data is transformed into a Semantic-Web-compliant form. VIVO provides automated and self-updating processes for improving data quality and authenticity. Starting with a classic Google-style search box, VIVO users can browse search results structured around people, research interests, courses, publications, and the like -- data that can be exposed for re-use by other systems in a machine-readable format. This webinar, held by a veteran at the Albert R. Mann Library Information Technology Services department at Cornell, where the VIVO project was born, presents the perspective of a software developer on the practicalities of building a high-quality Semantic-Web search service on existing data maintained in dozens of formats and software platforms at large, diverse institutions. The talk will highlight services that leverage the Semantic Web platform in innovative ways, e.g., for finding researchers based on the text content of a particular Web page and for visualizing networks of collaboration across institutions. SPEAKER: John Fereira, a senior programmer/analyst and technology strategist at Cornell University, is a contributing member of the VIVO project team. He also consults on issues related to information technology in higher education with an emphasis on open-source, modular, distributed software systems and is currently working on systems based on VIVO software for international Agricultural Information systems communities. Registration closes one hour before the webinar begins. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are potentially one such technological innovation and have generated a lot of press in the past year. This live, interactive webcast will focus on the role of the librarian in these online courses. First, we will examine what librarians are currently doing to provide support for these institutional course offerings. Next, we will discuss possible future roles that librarians can play as MOOCs move from the margins to the mainstream. Learning Outcomes: Learn about current library efforts to support MOOCs (e.g. copyright and licensing). Learn about new strategic challenges that MOOCs present for libraries (e.g. scale and remote services for diverse course demographics). Learn about new strategic opportunities that MOOCs present for libraries (e.g. information literacy instruction and Open Educational Resources (OERs). Presenter: John D. Shank, Instructional Design Librarian, Associate Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT), Instructor in Communication Arts & Sciences, Penn State Berks Co-founder of The Blended Librarian Technical Requirements: ACRL Webcasts are held in an Elluminate virtual classroom. Time magazine said that free MOOCs open the door to the ?Ivy League for the Masses.? Two of the world?s leading MOOCs, Coursera and Udacity, earned venture capital in the amounts of $22 million and $15 million, respectively. Educators, politicians, and yes, librarians, are taking note of this disruptive educational technology trend, and the future it holds for the training for our future scientists, doctors, nurses, engineers, and others entering STEM fields. I remember back my library school days, how librarians were fearing and struggling to redefine their role in ?search? in the Age of Google, and now, they face another challenge, finding their role aiding professors and students in the Era of the MOOC. In this 6-course certificate program, you will learn the fundamentals of user experience (UX) and how to apply user-centered strategies to library websites and beyond. The program begins by teaching you the key concepts of UX design and how to employ them in your website projects. Next, you will learn the ins and outs of information architecture: how to structure and organize your content so that it is both discoverable and navigable in the easiest way possible. The next two courses will give you the tools to continually get feedback on your website through usability testing and other research methods. You will then learn how to better write for the web so that once your users discover your content, they can both understand it and act on it. Finally, you will learn how you can create a website content strategy, so that from that point forward all your content will be useful, usable, and findable. All together, these courses cover a breadth of topics that will equip you with the skills necessary to create, manage, and sustain library websites that provide an excellent user experience. http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/certificate-ux.php Courses in the series: Designing a Usable Website (Concepts of User-Centered Design) Dates: June 2013 Instructor: Carolyn Ellis Information Architecture: Designing Navigation for Library Websites Dates: July 2013 Instructor: Susan Teague-Rector Do-It-Yourself Usability Testing Dates: August 2013 Instructor: Rebecca Blakiston Beyond Usability Testing: Other Research Methods Dates: September 2013 Instructor: Sonali Mishra Writing for the Web Dates: October 2013 Instructor: Nicole Capdarest and Rebecca Blakiston Developing a Website Content Strategy Dates: November 2013 Instructor: Rebecca Blakiston Library Juice Academy P.O. Building a Community-Managed Knowledgebase On Friday, May 31, 2013 NFAIS will hold a 90-minute webinar from 11:00am - 12:30pm EDST to take a look at the Global Open Knowledgebase (GOKb) ? a new open, community-based international data repository that will provide libraries with information about electronic resources. It will include data such as publication information, related organizations, and model licenses, and will be accessible across all US and UK academic libraries. The initiative was funded in June 2012 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is being led by the Kuali OLE partner libraries and JISC. The expectation is that a beta version will be launched this summer. The ultimate goal of the effort is to enhance the supply chain lifecycle for libraries in managing electronic resources while mobilizing community effort to add quality, timeliness and economies to the library management environment. Our speakers will be Kristin Antelman, Associate Director for the Digital Library, North Carolina State University, Raleigh and Liam Earney, Project Director, Knowledgebase Plus, JISC Collections. Some of the issues that they will discuss are: ? The industry problems that led to the development of GOKb such as issues of data quality and inefficient data management across the supply chain ? The approach taken to develop the repository, including principles of open data, collaboration, enhanced data, and use of standards and best practices. ? How GOKb data will be used in current national and local-level services, such as Knowledge Base Plus in the UK and Kuali OLE ? How it could be of use to entities of all types across the supply chain, including publishers and vendors ? The approach to supporting community management of GOKb going forward In addition, a demonstration of a beta version will be provided. If you or your staff want to learn more about this new global initiative and what role publishers may play, register for the NFAIS webinar today. NFAIS members pay $105, Sister Society members pay $115, and non-members pay $125. An unlimited number of staff from NFAIS member organizations can participate for a group fee of $255. The group fee for an unlimited number of staff from any Sister Society is $275, and from a non-member organization is $295. That's the question on our minds as the world declares its love for massive open online courses, or MOOCs. Libraries are a major part of universities, but they're almost entirely missing from the MOOC conversation. That's a big mistake. Libraries offer resources, from research to licensing support, that are essential to the future of MOOCs as they grow both in numbers and in seriousness. As MOOCs become an increasingly valid and valuable resource, it's clear that they can benefit from another great educational resource: librarians. In this asynchronous, 4-week online course you will build a Drupal site from the ground up, gaining hands-on experience with Drupal core tools and concepts. We will pay special attention to Drupal features as they relate to the specific organizational needs of libraries and library web services. This is an introductory level course, and though familiarity with HTML and CSS will be helpful, they are not required. Each student will get a free development account with a cloud-based Drupal service and will have continued access to their course website after the course finishes. Learning outcomes: - Ability to build a website in Drupal 7. - Hands-on experience using Drupal core features: fields, nodes, modules, blocks, menus, users, and themes. - Knowledge of Drupal in the context of designing and managing library websites. Cody Hennesy is the E-Learning Librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, where he focuses on the intersection of the library, technology and learning. He has coded a variety of academic library sites and tools and recently developed the front-end for the online resource, Alternatives in Print: A Directory of Alternative Publishers and Critical Periodicals. The call for proposals here once again: Call for Proposals: SWIB13 - Semantic Web in Libraries Conference ("Semantic Web in Bibliotheken"), 25.11. - 27.11.2013, Hamburg Linked Open Data (LOD) has become a widespread method for the publication and management of data on the web. Many libraries and related institutions have already run projects or launched products that comply with the LOD paradigm. New projects, services and tools are emerging continuously. The SWIB conference aims to provide substantial information on LOD developments relevant to the library world and to forster the exchange of ideas and experiences among practicioners. SWIB encourages thinking outside the box by involving participants and speakers from other domains, such as scholarly communications, museums and archives, or the publishing and news industry. As in the years before, SWIB13 will be organized by the North Rhine-Westphalian Library Service Centre (hbz) and the ZBW - German National Library of Economics / Leibniz Information Centre for Economics. You can imagine all sorts bad uses [i.e., if I were feeling evil I would replace the "Copy Link Address" function with one that downloads a trojan]. If this kind of functionality is super important, what you could do is 1. Disable the default context menu 2. Create a div (styled however you want) to replace it. I would probably do something else with highlighting text. Maybe when the user highlights text, append that text as a hidden value to a "Search!" button. You can get the highlighted text simply with window.getSelection() var text = window.getSelection().toString(); I would definitely write in some checks to make sure you're not grabbing gibberish from an image that's been highlighted, but that's pretty much it. It's vanilla js so should work with no problem in any jquery function. Text publications are ? and will be at least for the near future ? the predominant way of publishing research output and challenges still exist for their optimal recording and dissemination. Meanwhile, scientific communities recognise the immense significance of storing, discovering, processing, preserving and re-using data sets as well as other types of research objects like workflows and software. Furthermore, Public Sector Information, potentially valuable for research purposes, is provided openly by governments although not always in forms that enable re-use. Metadata is a critical factor in this area, actually providing the means to promote black-box digital files to discoverable and re-usable objects. A key requirement is capturing and disseminating rich descriptions of research output in standard, semantically clear forms, including contextual and provenance information, such as relationships of publications and data sets with people, organisations, funding information, facilities and equipment. This metadata needs to be some extent independent of a particular research domain, to foster collaboration and re-use of data sets across disciplines and vertical communities, while still allowing the recording and utilisation of domain-specific information. A range of open issues have to be addressed towards these goals. The aim of this Special Track is to serve as a forum for experts to present recent results and experiences, establish liaisons with other groups and reflect on the state-of-the-art of metadata and semantic aspectsof open repositories, research information systems and data infrastructures. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOPICS Topics include but are not limited to the following: - Metadata, knowledge representation and relevant standards in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Semantic interoperability and information integration in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Application of semantic web technologies in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Data infrastructures (e.g. scientific data, public sector information) - Contextual and provenance metadata in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Metadata interoperability for data infrastructures across disciplines - Metadata quality in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Mechanisms, tools and infrastructures for shared services in open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures - Digital preservation workflows and mechanisms and impact on metadata - Value-added services based on open access repositories, research information systems and research infrastructures IMPORTANT DATES 2013, June 20th: paper submission 2013, July 31th: acceptance/rejection notification 2013, August 20th: camera-ready papers due 2013, November 19-22: MTSR'13 in Thessaloniki. For example, I want to integrate web services like online course management system (Moodle), library databases (Ezporxy), library online catalog (KOHA), and others. Our campus provides LDAPS. I am not clear, however, how I can build up a single web interface which comprehensively manage all user access to those different services. I am looking for a simple, intuitive, and secure method to accomplish this. I will appreciate if you recommend any product, service, companies, and your personal experiences. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I concur. We've used Sharepoint 2007 and 2010 as an intranet going back to 2007. It makes a decent document management system for sharing departmental documents. Beyond that, it is more trouble than it's worth, IMHO. Trying to make it look and work like a regular website, or using it like a real CMS, is not trivial, and I do not recommend it. One thing Sharepoint generally does well is allowing you to quickly build a simple web form and data collection application that stores its data in a "list" (a data table). The time consuming aspects of custom-programming something like this--building the form and the database back end--are part of Sharepoint's built-in toolkit. Even here, though, you have to be very careful to set user access properly to maintain security and confidentiality. Sharepoint is true to its name: by default, it wants to share. Just Google for something like... sharepoint as a web cms Here's an example: http://www.cmswire.com/cms/customer-experience/3-things-to-know-before-using-sharepoint-to-build-your-website-013995.php -----Original Message----- From: Web technologies in libraries [mailto:WEB4LIB at LISTSERV.ND.EDU] On Behalf Of King, Mindy Sent: Wednesday, May 29, 2013 3:18 PM To: WEB4LIB at LISTSERV.ND.EDU Subject: Re: [WEB4LIB] Sharepoint books?
