Typically, these are the structures at the heart of content management systems, repositories, and digital libraries. Topics covered include XML fundamentals, XPath, DTDs and Schemas, standard markup languages, XSLT and Xquery, the semantic web, RDFa and RDFa Lite, RSS, ontologies and linked data, and the SPARQL semantic query language and protocol. Register for all six courses and get a 10% discount. Certificate in User Experience (UX) In this 6-course certificate program, you will learn the fundamentals of user experience (UX) and how to apply user-centered strategies to library websites and beyond. The program begins by teaching you the key concepts of UX design and how to employ them in your website projects. Next, you will learn the ins and outs of information architecture: how to structure and organize your content so that it is both discoverable and navigable in the easiest way possible. The next two courses will give you the tools to continually get feedback on your website through usability testing and other research methods. You will then learn how to better write for the web so that once your users discover your content, they can both understand it and act on it. Finally, you will learn how you can create a website content strategy, so that from that point forward all your content will be useful, usable, and findable. All together, these courses cover a breadth of topics that will equip you with the skills necessary to create, manage, and sustain library websites that provide an excellent user experience. Register for all six courses and get a 10% discount. Sponsor a Librarian Our "Sponsor a Librarian" program now has a fund that will distribute your donations to needy students, in addition to allowing you to pay the enrollment fees for entire courses for participants of your choice. This fund will let you make a donation in any amount. We will distribute the funds to a randomly-selected out-of-work librarian who has registered with the program. The "online version" (also PDF, one column, 6x9", designed and optimized for online reading) is 52 pages. Note that this is another case where the online version will offer a better display of one article (the first one) because of graphs. The issue includes: Libraries The Big Deal and the Damage Done pp. 1-6 If you're in an academic library, you need to be aware of this study, now available in three versions: A regular PDF (no DRM) for $9.99, a paperback for $16.50 and, especially suitable for library schools and any library wishing to make it broadly available, a campus license PDF version for $40 that explicitly allows mounting the book on a campus ebook or other server that allows multiple simultaneous access or downloading by authorized students and other users. This article includes Chapter 1 of the book and a segment of the concluding chapter. It includes eight graphs that will be easier to read in the one-column version, although they're all entirely readable in the two-column version. Technology pp. 6-10 A dozen little essays about a dozen specific technologies. The CD-ROM Project pp. 10-16 Moving toward the finish line: Possibly the last installment in this series, mostly a set of disappointments with two bright spots. Media 50 Movie Comedy Kings, Part 2 pp. 16-21 More old movies and more examples of the extent to which comedy flicks are context-sensitive. Indeed, twenty-six percent of the U.S. population is composed of ?digital omnivores,? those who own a minimum of three devices (laptop, smart phone, and tablet) . And today all digital ?readers? - whether omnivores or occasional - have come to expect that they will be permitted to use content in practical ways that make sense for them - re-use, sharing with colleagues, annotating passages, etc. Yet expectations and reality are not always in alignment. While providing consumers with a wide range of options from which to choose, the diversity of content formats, delivery platforms, computing devices/functionalities, and publisher policies have unintentionally raised barriers to ease of use. On Friday, June 21, 2013 NFAIS will hold a workshop, Digital Content: Fostering Usage Through Practical Functionalities and Policies, from 9:00am - 4:30pm EDST in Philadelphia, PA. This workshop will open with a look at the current consumption and use of digital content and related user reading behavior. This will be followed by a session on e-book acceptance and use from the perspective of students, faculty and librarians based upon recent studies of purchase decisions and actual usage. Issues related to mobile access and delivery will addressed as will some of the new tools, such as apps and software that enable well-established tasks such as annotating, sharing and peer review to be performed more efficiently and more effectively. The final two sessions will focus on the tensions between business sustainability and content usability and will attempt to answer the following questions: What content usages are required by students, researchers, and faculty? What are the barriers that impede such usage? What are the biggest concerns for institutions and their vendors? And how might all parties think about the issues with the objective of lessening the tensions and moving forward? If you or your staff want an update on digital content usage and the current technology and policy issues that need to be addressed in order to maximize that usage and improve the user experience, register for the workshop today. Both onsite and virtual registrations are available for individuals and for groups of three or more from the same organization. Group registrations can be a mix of onsite and virtual attendees, with a small food charge added for those attending onsite. Members of Sister Societies (CENDI, ISCTI, AAUP, NISO, ASIS&T, SSP, AAP/PSP, and LYRASIS) are eligible for discounts (see registration form link at: [http://nfais.org/event?eventID=525] http://nfais.org/event?eventID=525) For more information contact: Jill O?Neill, NFAIS Director, Communication and Planning, 215-893-1561 (phone); 215-893-1564 (fax); mailto:jilloneill at nfais.org or go to http://www.nfais.org/. It works very well. We began with PbWiki (now called PbWorks) and paid for extra security. Then our university put up their own wiki, so we switched to that. It's not as userfriendly as PbWiki, but it's free. My workgroup serves branch campus libraries and consists of 9 people in 5 widely separated locations. Having this information online in a single place has been very useful and we all rely on it now. When we added some new employees recently, they found it a great tool for getting up to speed. The wiki format makes it very easy for any of us to update the information and keep it current. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: I set up an intranet in Drupal. Pages that pull from the Drupal database are accessed by logins. Uploaded files are restricted by ip address, so it can't hold any confidential information (ie. no lists of ids and passwords for the ezproxy, nothing with bank account numbers). A separate user group and configured ezproxy to only let that group through can get access tighter, but it's clunky. I didn't put Open Atrium on the Drupal install, because it's overkill for my small library, Do look at that, though. Set up is straightforward. I don't know of a popular CMS that will restrict access to files. Xoda does this, but it's pretty much a document storage system with nothing else. Regarding the other person's comment on LibGuides, LibGuides didn't restrict file access when I was using it. I haven't used it in about 2 years, but test access to uploaded files, because I think those will be wide open even if access to the guide is restricted. It also makes everything look like boxes. -Wilhelmina Randtke On Wed, Jun 5, 2013 at 3:27 PM, Vinke, Dana wrote: > Hi,**** > > ** ** > > Does anyone make use of a Wiki style online employee manual which can be > password protected? We went live in fall 2012 and it has gone quite smoothly since then. Here is a link: http://library.pdx.edu/studyrooms The system is built using PHP and MySQL, and supports a range of authentication methods (we use Millennium's Patron API right now, and are shifting over to CAS this summer). Rooms checkout within the application, so it can be run as a standalone, self-contained system. It supports a range of room types, filtering by room amenities, and setting usage limits. It is currently screen-reader accessible, and we're in the midst of developing a mobile interface for it. We recently packaged the application to share with another department on campus, and are putting the finishing touches on a packaged version that we'll make available as an open-source application. We haven't made this available yet, but would be happy to share it at this point. There is also the link to a spreadsheet of our national findings here: http://librarywebsites.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/full-data-set.xlsx The next step in the project is to get input directly from library patrons about both their information needs, how they use your current website, and their general thoughts on its current usability and opportunities for improvement. Similar to our previous study we are reaching out to public and academic libraries across the country and would like to invite your library to participate. We will send each participating library a link to an online survey to forward out to their patron email list and post on their website. It is our goal for this project to provide valuable information on the website information needs of library patrons across the country. The results can serve as a national aggregate view of the needs of patrons. We will also provide you with your patron-specific data in comparison with the national aggregate data. If you are interested in participating, please complete this brief form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1-BH-0gOtjzUqwSGjPLL91VhP2HXgP-m_mdinsEyAPlU/viewform We will send you a followup email with the survey link to send to your library patrons in the next month. The design of Website navigation can be simple or complex, flat or deep. In all cases, website navigation should take into account information architecture (IA) best practices, common user tasks in the library domain, user research, analytics and information seeking models. In this four week, asynchronous, online course, you will gain insight into the art & science of IA, the discipline of labeling and organizing online information for optimal usability and findability. This course will introduce you to basic types of navigation, as well as classification schemes for organizing information. You will learn about best practices for labeling navigation, search engine optimiziation (SEO) and usability. Finally, you will gain hands-on experience developing a navigation scheme for a library website. This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in User Experience (UX), but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well. What communication/support/networking venues are out there for Drupal developers in libraries? *We know about/have participated in: -the drupal4lib mailing list -the ALA LITA Drupal Interest Group -the Libraries group on drupal.org: http://groups.drupal.org/libraries -the drupalib web site: http://drupalib.interoperating.info/ ...did we miss any? *2. Does anyone know of a comprehensive, up-to-date list of library-specific contributed modules?* There's this one: http://drupalib.interoperating.info/library_modules ...but it was last updated in March 2012; And this one: https://groups.drupal.org/libraries/modules ...which feels incomplete. I've made a couple for trainings I've done, but they're out of date now, too. :) Thanks in advance! *3. Does anyone know of any installation profiles and/or Drupal distributions that have been created for libraries,* AND: if you know of any, have they been officially contributed back to d.o? Also, *4: Chris and I are trying to brainstorm ideas for better communication/collaboration regarding library-specific Drupal development-any ideas?* Success stories to share, either in library/non-profit/other environments? How can we promote adoption/use/growth of Drupal in library environments? How could we better collaborate to save one another time, and what projects/products does the Drupal library community need? Rather, products provide a basic core of functionality designed to serve the general needs of libraries, with configuration options to set operational and cosmetic details for individual implementations. Many libraries, however, need to implement new functionality not delivered with the base product. Libraries might be able to press the developers of the products, developed under either proprietary or open source licenses, to create enhancements to the core system to meet these needs. A more sustainable model involves the use of application programming interfaces (API)s that allow library programmers to write code to extend the capabilities of the product, to enable interoperability with other applications, or to extract and manipulate data. Most of the major library management and discovery applications offer APIs that open up data and functionality to libraries and to third party developers. This session aims to reveal the extent to which libraries can expect to extend products through exercising the APIs provided with their key technology products. I a dynamic debate format, the moderator will explore this topic with the chief technology or strategy officers of the major library vendors and with one or more library technologists involved in projects that rely on APIs. Panel participants: * Marshall Breeding, Library Technology Guides (Moderator) * Jane Burke, Serials Solutions / ProQuest, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives * Carmit Marcus, Director of Product Management, Ex Libris * Brad Jung, VP Product Management, Innovative Interfaces * Eric Graham, Lead Software Developer for 3rd Party Integration, Polaris Library Systems * Ranny Lacanienta, Director of Product Management * Robin Murray, OCLC Vice President, Global Product Management Agenda: 8:30 - 8:40: Introductions of panelists and moderator. 8:40-9:00 (Marshall Breeding) Brief introduction to the topic to frame the panel discussion. Breeding will give a very brief definition of APIs and some of the relevant concepts, including service-oriented architecture. Other issues covered would include relying more on APIs than reprogramming application code to accomplish local customizations or functional needs; APIs to achieve interoperability among diverse systems in the library's environment, the enterprise infrastructure of its parent organization, and with peers and business partners. 9:00 - 9:345 Discussion based on questions from Moderator 9:45 - 10:00 Questions from participants ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-06-18 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was wondering if you can share your comments on the following. At job we are interested in developing the core routines that let us use Tablets (Mainly Android but Ipads are considered also) for the visualization of maps created with Google maps to follow tendencies in general robbery, crimes, safe areas, areas where people need help and more. In first instance we decided that our maps have to be able to receive coordinates, not the already located address that Google maps can locate easily but coordinates generated with a GPS device. An example could be that on a mountain a group of persons follow a route and when they found something bad or that has to be some action taken will push a button to mark the place . The actual devices already can send an SMS message or an email to any place we want with the information of the location point and will push every minute the information to create the route the person with the device follows. So in paper all the process we want works for sure . Now the nice part, what tools to use. 1) Is anyone using Python for developing Android applications in general? 2) Where to start? Do we have to subscribe and get a Google ID as developers to use their API's and what Google offers to be able to use those tools with Python? 3) Do you already use Python for developing and creating maps with Google on the desktop side? If so. It is not so complicated, I mean, it is better to use Python instead of some other programming languages? Some of the IT guys have told us that Python is not the language to use but I believe it is the correct tool for this . I am not sure what would be my tools yet but as a programming language I think is ideal for the task. I believe it is just a matter of where to start, what do you need for tools, framework of development, etc. 4) Can you share links of where to start studying about Google development with Python (besides the Google website) any forum like this or online you recommend? Training material, free if possible? 5) Are you developing application for Ipad using Python? 6) Any forum you specially recommend for developers on the above subjects? I believe it is just a matter of where to start, what do you need for tools, framework of development, etc. 4) Can you share links of where to start studying about Google development with Python (besides the Google website) any forum like this or online you recommend? Training material, free if possible? 5) Are you developing application for Ipad using Python? 6) Any forum you specially recommend for developers on the above subjects? I am sorry if some of the questions sound stupid. Thanks in advance for all your time and comments. DCMI and W3C are sponsoring a special session at the DC-2013 conference in Lisbon on 3 September about the long-term preservation and governance of RDF vocabularies [1]. This session focuses on issues related to the usability of RDF vocabularies in the long term (as defined in "decades") -- continued access to documentation, inheritance of ownership and maintenance responsibility, and the continued resolvability of domain names. What role might memory institutions play in the long-term preservation of vocabularies? It's time for a symposium on the current landscape and a look at the opportunities for research, programs, practices and experiences of pioneers in this space. Dysart & Jones Associates have assembled a stellar crew of the leading thinkers and innovators in the fields of critical making. Attendees will tour the University of Toronto iSchool Semaphore Research Lab, hear of international innovations in FabLabs and Makerspaces in libraries, explore the use of maker technology in museums and cultural institutions, and learn the connections to strategies for research, community and education. When one of Time magazine's top 100 thinkers, Chris Anderson, a famed journalist, and editor of Wired magazine and entrepreneur, writes his third book (following librarians' favorite, The Long Tail) on Makers: The New Industrial Revolution in 2012, you know the maker revolution is on the way! The book describes how entrepreneurs using open source design, and 3D printing as a platform are driving a resurgence of American manufacturing. The innovations portrayed, crowdsourcing of ideas, utilization of available lower-cost design and manufacturing tools, and reviewing options to outsource capital-intensive manufacturing were also highlighted in the February 2012 Harvard Business Review article, "From Do It Yourself to Do It Together". Many industries, libraries, and museums have embraced the maker revolution. This two-day symposium illustrates the breadth and depth of the revolution, puts it into the context of libraries and museums, shares exciting programs already being pioneered and suggests areas for future endeavours. It features leading edge thinkers and practitioners, includes a tour of the University of Toronto's Critical Making Lab and focuses on strategies for libraries, museums, K-12 and other education and academic institutions. Matt Ratto, iSchool Professor; Director, Critical Making Lab, and Director, Semaphore Research Cluster on Mobile and Pervasive Computing University of Toronto http://www.ischool.utoronto.ca/faculty/matt-ratto . Professional I have been dealing with a lot of hosting companies, setting up content management systems, and I have not had a problem with HostPapa. There have been some comments about GoDaddy. I will add that "daddy's grils" turned some of my clients off, and daddy's safari trip where he shot an elephant with a machine gun was a complete turn off for me as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO5z4HOcsDs Regards, Marek Urban www.murban.ca On Wed, Jun 26, 2013 at 12:30 PM, Ann Johnston wrote: > We are considering changing our database hosting site from Host My Site > to a less expensive alternative with more functionality. Many larger hosting companies will offer them. I have two accounts at very discounted rates- namecheap and stablehost. Each is less than 40/yr with coupons. I stopped using namecheap, memory set way too low. I am very happy with stablehost (coupons at webhostingtalk.com) Hostgator was my preferred host for years, but I did not like paying $9/mon and they have fantastico. Softalious is a much better auto installer- tons more available than fantastico. I have moved all my hosting to stablehost for the reduced cost, good support, and features. Two professional library assoc sites and my personal sites. But Hostgator never gave me any problems. After you are down to 2 or 3 companies, I recommend two things: Don't pay full price Look at auto install scripts for your preferred app and broad coverage of apps Roy Degler Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion. Submissions for participation are currently open in the areas of short papers, abstracts, and position statements. Metadata is vital to the discovery and management of scientific data. DC-SAM, RDA, and related communities advocate for access to, and shared knowledge about, metadata standards that support data life-cycle management. CAMP-4-DATA participants will explore infrastructure design, applications, and policies that can advance the support of open, collective and sustainable access to metadata standards used for managing scientific data. The intent of this workshop is to discuss and forward challenges and opportunities relating to metadata standards for the management of scientific data, and how policies, applications, and infrastructure can foster creation of and access to sustainable, open, and collective standards. The CAMP-4-DATA workshop is part of post-conference activities of DC-2013. Submissions will remain open through 12 July 2013. ============= --FULL PARTICIPATION CALL: http://dcevents.dublincore.org/IntConf/index/pages/view/camp-4-data-cfp --WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: http://dcevents.dublincore.org/IntConf/index/pages/view/camp-4-data --E X T E N D E D SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 12 JULY 2013 --DC-2013 WEBSITE: http://purl.org/dcevents/dc-2013 (registration open / day registration available) ============= ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-06-28 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Anybody experience with Amazon's AWS? We use Linode and had customized applications such as a la carte, knowbot, and many others. We haven't needed to contact for the support, so I don't know how the customer service is, but so far we are happy with it. Lately, I am working on a bento-styled search interface (Summon, ruby on rails), and thinking of switching to Amazon AWS. The scalability, speed, and traffic AWS offers sounds great. I really want to have the search results return within reasonable time frame, and AWS sounds more fit for that. The problem is their as-you-go pricing. I can handle any technical difficulties, but I am not sure how to estimate the budget for AWS. Any thought? In-Reply-To: Message-ID: We are AWS Consulting Partners, and run our hosting and dev infrastructures on AWS. Our strategy is: Create an EC2 instance that you think will cover your requirements with one box. This does not have ot be perfect, as you can change it. Point an elastic IP address at your instance. Give it three months and get the best metrics you can on resource usage. After three to six months. you can either: Move to (or keep) an instance that will cover 90 percent (or more) or your peak load, configuring your server to queue peak traffic; or Move to (or keep) an instance that will cover 90 percent or your peak load, and set up autoscaling. At that point you will want to move to a one or preferably three year reserved instance. While autoscaling is well-documented, it is not trivial to set up, more for stratigic issues than technical. Assuming that you stay with a simpler infrastructure, at least in your first year, the numbers are simple to figure. For example, a medium On-Demand instance in Oregon or Virginia runs $0.120 an hour. 730 hours per month give you $87.60/month. Moving to a three year heavy usage (24/7) reservation costs $514 (one-time) and brings your hourly to $0.023 an hour or $16.79/month net / $31.07 gross (amortized reservation cost added). There are other costs, but those are, for the kind of services you describe, nearly trivial. Your biggest costs other than EC2, will likely be storage, and that will largely depend on you you do backups. In late autumn 2012, the New York Times declared 2012 as the ?Year of the MOOC?. Earlier, theMIT Review, claimed that they were ?the most important education technology in 200 years?, and in a cover story, Time, characterized MOOCs as a major factor that was ?reinventing college?. The MOOC phenomenon has also been covered by The Guardian and the Times Educational Supplement, among numerous other educational and news media. In mid-March 2013, the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, hosted a two-day conference titled ?MOOCs and Libraries: Massive Opportunity or Overwhelming Challenge??. Co-sponsored by OCLC? Research, the event included a session on Copyright, Licensing, Open Access and one on New Opportunities for Librarians: What Happens When You Go Behind the Lines in a MOOC? Participants in the former session members discussed ?the challenges for licensing and clearing copyright for materials? used in MOOCs, and explored the potential ?opportunities for advancing the conversation on open access with faculty,? while members of the latter reported and speculated on the roles of libraries and librarians in the MOOC environment. Among those noted were: serving as an advocate for different resource licensing models, identifying and organizing public domain images, as well as encouraging Open Access publishing, and the use of institutional repository content, among other initiatives Compared to discussion of copyright and licensing negotiations and fair use of proprietary content, however, consideration of Open Educational Resources and their use in MOOCs was not as extensive and implementation strategies were not discussed in detail. To become more engaged in Massive Open Online Courses and Open Educational Resources, librarians should become more knowledgeable about each.
