using a Linux boot disk to provide Internet access to the public

Hi Hilton,

Thanks for your reply.

We have several small libraries which are a long distance from our headquarters. When a PC stops working someone must visit the library; bring the PC back to headquarters, repair it, and return it to the library. Frequently, the PC can't boot up because of damage to the boot sector or to the hard disk. A great many of our problems are solved by reinstalling the Windows operating system.

These difficulties could be avoided if we posted a Linux boot USB pen to the library. The pen would be write protected. This would seem to be a huge improvement on our current practice. I know getting this solution to work with a printer would be a challenge.

Regards
John

Hi John

What you are referring to is a "Live CD" in the Ubuntu Linux world.
It is also possible to create a "Live USB".
The best application of thin client using Linux, is Edubuntu, as far as I know.
Please see: http://ubuntu.sun.ac.za for our use of Ubuntu on campus.
And here is the main Ubuntu website: http://www.ubuntu.com

Also can you be more specific about the problem you are trying to solve.

Cheers

hg

Hi,

It is possible to purchase Linux boot disks online. Has any library ever used these to provide Internet access to the public? The disks include 'Open Office' and they seem to perform quite well on old computers. Can they be used as an alternative to a 'thin client', or do they present difficulties that I haven't considered?

Regards,

John
