One of the features included in the client software is the ability to clear out session data, as well as registry and file clearing. So when the session ends, you can, for example, clear out anything your public access user saved to the desktop (C:\USERS\{library public user login}\DESKTOP). Very handy. I am testing out just clearing out the entire public access user profile after the session ends (C:\users\{library public user login}, so that I don't have to enter in so many statements (desktop, downloads, etc.). So the library public user profile will get recreated each time they log in via the CASSIE software. Anyone have any warnings/advice about this, i.e., would this negatively impact the hardware, OS, etc., to constantly be deleting/recreating the public profile? This may be a non-issue, but I thought I'd ask around. While testing this I noticed that if the profile gets corrupted, the newly created one, with a slightly different name (includes the domain) won't clear out the session data for that profile...thus I'd have to keep going into the configuration manager of CASSIE and updating the list of files to clear, using the newly created username. Maybe we instead need to clear out files using the system variable %username%? If you've gone down this path in CASSIE (already know about DeepFreeze, etc., which is not an option for us at this time), I would appreciate your feedback/advice. I do have this question in to the vendor as well, but always like to hear from end users. One of the features included in the client software is the ability to clear out session data, as well as registry and file clearing. So when the session ends, you can, for example, clear out anything your public access user saved to the desktop (C:\USERS\{library public user login}\DESKTOP). Very handy. I am testing out just clearing out the entire public access user profile after the session ends (C:\users\{library public user login}, so that I don?t have to enter in so many statements (desktop, downloads, etc.). So the library public user profile will get recreated each time they log in via the CASSIE software. Anyone have any warnings/advice about this, i.e., would this negatively impact the hardware, OS, etc., to constantly be deleting/recreating the public profile? This may be a non-issue, but I thought I?d ask around. While testing this I noticed that if the profile gets corrupted, the newly created one, with a slightly different name (includes the domain) won?t clear out the session data for that profile?thus I?d have to keep going into the configuration manager of CASSIE and updating the list of files to clear, using the newly created username. Maybe we instead need to clear out files using the system variable %username%? If you?ve gone down this path in CASSIE (already know about DeepFreeze, etc., which is not an option for us at this time), I would appreciate your feedback/advice. I do have this question in to the vendor as well, but always like to hear from end users. Note:As many know Harnad has been one of the eaders promoting OA for many of years . I gave an invited presentation at titled "Alternative Peer Review: Quality Management for 21st Century Scholarship" at the Workshop On Peer Review, Trieste, Italy, May 23-24 2003 at which he (and other OA leaders) also presented. [Yikes, More Than 10 Years Ago] My presentation is linked at http://scholarship20.blogspot.com/2009/11/article-level-metrics-and-evolution-of.html /Gerry Beall, Jeffrey (2013) The Open-Access Movement is Not Really about Open Access. TripleC Communication, Capitalism & Critique Journal. 11(2): 589-597 http://triplec.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/525/514 This wacky article is going to be fun to review. I still think Jeff Beall is doing something useful with his naming and shaming of junk OA journals, but I now realize that he is driven by some sort of fanciful conspiracy theory! "OA is all an anti-capitlist plot." (Even on a quick skim it is evident that Jeff's article is rife with half-truths, errors and downright nonsense. Pity. It will diminish the credibility of his valid expos?s, but maybe this is a good thing, if the judgment and motivation behind Beall's list is as kooky as this article! But alas it will now also give the genuine "predatory" junk-journals some specious arguments for discrediting Jeff's work altogether. Of course it will also give the publishing lobby some good sound-bites, but they use them at their peril, because of all the other nonsense in which they are nested!) Before I do a critique later today), I want to post some tidbits to set the stage: JB: "ABSTRACT: While the open-access (OA) movement purports to be about making scholarly content open-access, its true motives are much different. The OA movement is an anti-corporatist movement that wants to deny the freedom of the press to companies it disagrees with. The movement is also actively imposing onerous mandates on researchers, mandates that restrict individual freedom. To boost the open-access movement, its leaders sacrifice the academic futures of young scholars and those from developing countries, pressuring them to publish in lower-quality open-access journals. The open-access movement has fostered the creation of numerous predatory publishers and standalone journals, increasing the amount of research misconduct in scholarly publications and the amount of pseudo-science that is published as if it were authentic science." JB: "[F]rom their high-salaried comfortable positions?OA advocates... demand that for-profit, scholarly journal publishers not be involved in scholarly publishing and devise ways (such as green open-access) to defeat and eliminate them... JB: "OA advocates use specious arguments to lobby for mandates, focusing only on the supposed economic benefits of open access and ignoring the value additions provided by professional publishers. The arguments imply that publishers are not really needed; all researchers need to do is upload their work, an action that constitutes publishing, and that this act results in a product that is somehow similar to the products that professional publishers produce?. JB: "The open-access movement isn't really about open access. Instead, it is about collectivizing production and denying the freedom of the press from those who prefer the subscription model of scholarly publishing. It is an anti-corporatist, oppressive and negative movement, one that uses young researchers and researchers from developing countries as pawns to artificially force the make-believe gold and green open-access models to work. The movement relies on unnatural mandates that take free choice away from individual researchers, mandates set and enforced by an onerous cadre of Soros-funded European autocrats... JB: "The open-access movement is a failed social movement and a false messiah, but its promoters refuse to admit this. The emergence of numerous predatory publishers ? a product of the open-access movement ? has poisoned scholarly communication, fostering research misconduct and the publishing of pseudo-science, but OA advocates refuse to recognize the growing problem. By instituting a policy of exchanging funds between researchers and publishers, the movement has fostered corruption on a grand scale. Instead of arguing for openaccess, we must determine and settle on the best model for the distribution of scholarly research, and it's clear that neither green nor gold open-access is that model... And then, my own personal favourites: JB: "Open access advocates think they know better than everyone else and want to impose their policies on others. Thus, the open access movement has the serious side-effect of taking away other's freedom from them. We observe this tendency in institutional mandates. Harnad (2013) goes so far as to propose [an]?Orwellian system of mandates? documented [in a] table of mandate strength, with the most restrictive pegged at level 12, with the designation "immediate deposit + performance evaluation (no waiver option)". This Orwellian system of mandates is documented in Table 1... JB: "A social movement that needs mandates to work is doomed to fail. A social movement that uses mandates is abusive and tantamount to academic slavery. Researchers need more freedom in their decisions not less. How can we expect and demand academic freedom from our universities when we impose oppressive mandates upon ourselves?..." Stay tuned!? This announcement is going out to a much wider community in case there are others who are interested. After about 40 years of using the MARC standard for metadata transfer, and with various activities now underway to move this data into new kinds of environments, it seems like a good time to inspect the data we have on hand. Toward this end, I have reported on the actual usage of MARC tags and subfields in WorldCat on a quarterly basis for the past year (there are now over 300 million MARC records in the database). Although the formal, and accurate, title of the project is "MARC Usage in WorldCat", I informally call it my "ground truthing" activity. "Ground truthing" is the process whereby geographic remote sensing data is verified or enhanced by on-the-ground observation and measurement. Over the past year I have performed a similar function for library cataloging. We have used the MARC standard for many decades, but how, exactly? Which elements and subfields have actually been used, and more importantly, how? The site at provides field and subfield counts as well as the specific contents of some subfields ordered by number of occurrences. There are also visualizations of this data available. Besides providing a basis of evidence for use in determining opportunities and challenges in moving our data into new encodings, this work has already helped inform our ongoing data quality work at OCLC. I also entertain requests for reports on specific subfields, just email me to request or use the link at the bottom of any page on the web site. I think the proper link for your institution is this one: http://scholar.google.com/schhp?inst=450414021512529004 That should automatically configure your library's link resolver as the one to use when the user performs a search regardless of whether they are on campus or not. Look up words to find their meanings and associations with other words and concepts. Produce diagrams reminiscent of a neural net. Learn how words associate. Enter words into the search box to look them up or double-click a node to expand the tree. Click and drag the background to pan around and use the mouse wheel to zoom. Hover over nodes to see the definition and click and drag individual nodes to move them around to help clarify connections. It's a dictionary! It's a thesaurus! Great for writers, journalists, students, teachers, and artists. The online dictionary is available wherever there?s an internet connection. No membership required. Visuwords? uses Princeton University?s WordNet, an opensource database built by University students and language researchers. Combined with a visualization tool and user interface built from a combination of modern web technologies, Visuwords? is available as a free resource to all patrons of the web. The Visuwords? Interface To use the applet you only need to type a word into the search query at the top of the page and press 'Enter'. A network of nodes or 'synsets' will spring out from the word that you entered. A synset is essentially a single concept that is represented by a number of terms or synonyms. Synonyms are words with different spellings that convey the same idea. For example when you lookup "seem", you see that the word is connected to four synsets each represented by a green circle. Green denotes verbs so all of these synsets represent verbs. Two of these synsets have the lone word "seem"; one has two terms: "appear" and "seem"; and the third has three terms: "look", "appear" and "seem". Each of the four synsets has its own definition. Hovering over a node with the mouse will reveal all of the synonyms for a given synset as well as its definition. Some synsets will also show a few examples of usage. These synsets link to each other and to other synsets according to entries in the WordNet database. You can zoom the model in and out by rolling the wheel on your mouse. You can click the gray background within the applet and drag the mouse in order to shift the whole model around so you can explore. You can grab any node and pull it away from the others to clarify connections. As far as I can tell , the new My Library feature (http://googlescholar.blogspot.com/2013/11/google-scholar-library.html) is just a method to save individual articles, associated with your Google account. It doesn't have anything to do with whether the library links show up or not - that is determined either by IP address, or by the user choosing which library links appear using Google Scholar preferences (which is then stored in a cookie). So, our hypothetical off-campus user could both be logged into our proxy server and accessing Google Scholar through the proxy, and logged into their individual Google account to use the Google Scholar My Library feature. If anyone has any conflicting information, I'd be glad to know about it, though! Since we don't have to maintain the vmware server I can only address the client side of things. To date our experience has been entirely positive. The wyze boxes have no fans or moving parts so there's been a noticeable reduction in noise. We've experienced no performance issues. We can fix configuration problems and upgrade software faster than we were able to in the past. They don't require Deepfreeze which will save us a little bit of money. We've had no hardware failures with the clients and the fears of the skeptics have proven unfounded. Our goal now is replace our remaining public pc's. -Lyman Systems Librarian University of Vermont Libraries On 12/11/2013 9:38 PM, Chadwick, John C. wrote: > During a discussion today, the subject of keeping up with demand for > desktop computing without breaking the bank came up. Along the way, it has seen battles for standards, competing platforms, and exciting innovations ? all in the name of delivering the best possible sites to users. In this presentation, Brad (the developer of possibly the first responsive library website) will give historical background that puts the shift toward responsive design in context. He will also layout some forward-thinking concepts for where web design and development are heading in the near future. Responsive sites: http://www.cantonpl.org http://www.commercialprogression.com http://www.codemichigan.com 2. *Your Library, Anywhere: A Modern, Responsive Library Catalogue at University of Toronto Libraries* Presenters: *Bilal Khalid, Gordon Belray, Lisa Gayhart* With the recent surge in the mobile device market and an ever-expanding patron base with increasingly divergent levels of technical ability, the University of Toronto Libraries embarked on the development of a new catalogue discovery layer to fit the needs of its diverse users. The result: (http://search.library.utoronto.ca) a mobile-friendly, flexible and intuitive web application that brings the full power of a faceted library catalogue to users without compromising quality or performance, employing Responsive Web Design principles. In this talk we will discuss: application development; interface design; and project communications. 3. *Maintaining multiple responsive designs with a small staff* Presenter: *Steve Cherry* The Catholic University of America libraries decided to adopt responsive design due to increasing mobile traffic. However, maintaining a unique theme for each site that needed one placed a huge burden on the small team. Steve will discuss some of the tools and techniques used to lessen that burden, allowing CUA Libraries to reuse the majority of code across systems. The SRJC library website serves as the main interface for student research and as the primary instructional tool for approximately 40 information literacy classes a semester. A discussion of the challenges faced in introducing multi-browser, multi-screen size performance while adhering to the College's visual design requirements will include strategies taken to implement consistent navigation across mobile phones, tablets and desktop interfaces as well use of media queries for presentation of text and graphics. Highlights of some of the tools used to showcase and feature library resources across multiple device and display sizes will be addressed, including use of adaptive slide shows, carousels, lightboxes and other jquery-based tools. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2013-12-13 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our router allows me to choose which day of the month the traffic counter resets, but I can't turn the resetting completely off to let it cumulate. Once it has reset, the statistics for the previous period are lost. The small window of opportunity would make it very difficult to catch the stats consistently. Even if we managed to record them, I'm not sure whether the number of megabytes uploaded and downloaded would be very meaningful, anyway. Can anyone recommend a router that is set up better for collecting statistics? Or software we could use (preferably free)? If you are able to count individual users and record the times of usage, how do you do it? Libraries are in the midst of moving away from AACR2 and MARC 21 to the new world of the semantic web, linked data, FRBR, and RDA. As noted by Ted Fons, Executive Director, Data Services & WorldCat Quality at OCLC and the guest content editor for this ISQ issue, ?the success of the web as a research tool has dramatically changed the library?s role in the exposure of library catalogs. The rise of new metadata initiatives reflects the need to respond to this change and to increase our effectiveness in the exchange and management of library metadata.? Fons has gathered together in the Winter 2013 issue of ISQ a set of thoughtful and informative articles about the work that is underway in this bibliographic data evolution. In the feature article, Are Current Bibliographic Models Suitable for Integration with the Web?, Lars Svensson from the German National Library discusses why it is important for libraries to make their metadata an integral part of the web and why libraries need (but don?t yet have) an agreed-upon model that can draw in entities across the cultural heritage sector. Paul Moss (OCLC) in his opinion piece, Replacing MARC: Where to Start, further emphasizes the need to step away from thinking solely about a single library interchange format and instead consider that ?each function MARC serves should be examined independently and may be replaced by a different technology.? The Library of Congress initiated a Bibliographic Framework project (BIBFRAME) in 2011 to define a replacement for MARC 21. The George Washington University is one of the early experimenters for BIBFRAME and Jackie Shieh in the first in-practice article reviews how their participation was a ?transformative opportunity? for their staff ?to contribute and establish a new standard that would benefit researchers navigating the information sphere.? Another national library, the Biblioth?que nationale de France (BnF), is also a leader in defining and implementing this new bibliographic model. Ted Fons interviews Gildas Illien, Director of BnF?s Bibliographic and Digital Information Department, who discusses the need for a new framework for bibliographic data exchange, what the BnF has already done to transform the way they express their bibliographic data, what European libraries have been focusing their efforts on in the past five years related to metadata management, and what the focus should be in the next two years. As an example of how the bibliographic community is addressing these issues, in the context of the wider web, Richard Wallis (OCLC) reviews the work of Schema Bib Extend, a W3C Community Group focused on establishing a consensus within the bibliographic community around proposals for extending the Schema.org vocabulary to enhance its capabilities in describing bibliographic resources. Todd Carpenter (NISO) reviews how the NISO Bibliographic Roadmap project is Charting a Course through a New Exchange Environment in an effort to ensure that the needs of a variety of affected stakeholders?not just libraries?will be fully integrated into the new bibliographic ecosystem. ?It is my hope,? states Fons, ?that this set of thoughtful essays provides you with some insight into the landscape of new metadata initiatives and is a useful continuation of the dialog on how we can improve data exchange.? ISQ is available in open access in electronic format on the NISO website. Both the entire Winter 2013 Evolution of Bibliographic Data Exchange issue and the individual articles may be freely downloaded. Print copies are available by subscription and as print on demand. During October and November 2013, I conducted a web-based survey on makerspaces in libraries. The questions used in the survey are available here. Respondents were solicited from 12 electronic discussion lists, some tweets, and one Facebook group: Makerspaces and the Participatory Library . I greatly appreciate the time that participants took to complete the survey. 143 librarians responded to the survey. 41% of the respondents currently provide makerspaces in their libraries (or provide maker activities through their libraries). 36% of the respondents are planning to start makerspaces in the near future. 24% of respondents are not currently providing makerspaces nor are planning to do so. The following responses all come from the 109 librarians who currently provide makerspaces or who plan to soon start a makerspace. Makerspaces appear in most types of libraries. 51% of respondents are in public libraries, 36% are in academic libraries,a and 9% are in school libraries. The remaining 4% chose "other" for their type of library (0% selected special libraries) -- entering combined school and public libraries (2), a community college library, and an iSchool. Librarians from 30 U.S. states, from Alabama to Wisconsin, responded to the survey along with librarians from seven other countries (Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom). Makerspaces tend to be a new addition to most respondents' libraries. 46% of respondents started their makerspace in the last year, 13% in the last 1-2 years, and 11% two or more years ago. The remaining responses came from libraries that had not yet started to offer a makerspace. Funding for the makerspaces came from a variety of sources. Respondents chose one or more of the following ways that their makerspaces could be funded: - 36% found funding in the library budgets - 29% received grants - 14% received donations - 11% requested additional funding from their parent organizations - 11% noted "other" ways to fund the makerspace, including "local investors" 52 librarians reported that their makerspaces charge (or will be charging) for the following items (respondents chose one or more of the following options): - 40% for supplies used in making - 38% responded with "other" responses, mainly noting that they had not decided whether to charge, or were definitely not going to charge - 13% for classes for workshops - 4% for equipment use - 4% for membership fees I asked respondents to choose the technologies or forms of making they included in their makerspaces from a list of 55 items. All but six of the items were selected by at least one makerspace (those six were welding, stained glass, metal shop activities, letterpress, glass shop activities, and blacksmithing). The top 15 technologies or forms of making, each of which were chosen by 25% or more of the 109 respondents, were: - Computer workstations 67% - 3D printing 46% - Photo editing 45% - Video editing 43% - Computer programming/software 39% - Art and crafts 37% - Scanning photos to digital 36% - Creating a website or online portfolio 34% - Digital music recording 33% - 3D modeling 31% - Arduino/Raspberry Pi 30% - Other 30% (included knitting, Legos, etc.) - Animation 28% - High quality scanner 28% - Tinkering 26% Librarians reported that training sessions, workshops, or classes in their makerspaces were taught by library staff (49%), volunteers (27%), paid instructors from beyond the library (13%), or "other" (12%), which includes IT staff, maker group members, "Student Geek Force," and "center for teaching and learning." Respondents also listed their most popular making activities and technologies, their go-to resources for keeping track of making developments, and what they expect to add to their makerspaces in the next year. More details from the survey will be available in the forthcoming book *Makerspaces: A Practical Guide for Librarians* by John Burke (to be published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers in 2014 -- more information is available on other titles in the Practical Guide for Librariansseries). I hope these results are of interest and advance our collective understanding of makerspaces and how they are being implemented in libraries. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have on the survey. John John J. I'm wondering what methods other libraries use to collect statistics for the use of their public wifi hotspots. We know some people sit outside our building to use the wifi signal when we're closed, but it would be interesting to know how much this is going on. Thanks for any tips you can send my way. Are you thinking about ways that libraries can improve services to users? The American Library Association (ALA) gives an annual grant for those conducting research that will lead to the improvement of services to users. The Carroll Preston Baber Research Grant is given to one or more librarians or library educators who will conduct innovative research that could lead to an improvement in services to any specified group of people. The grant, up to $3,000, will be given to a proposed project that aims to answer a question of vital importance to the library community that is national in scope. Among the review panel criteria are: * The research problem is clearly defined, with a specific question or questions that can be answered by collecting data. The applicant(s) clearly describe a strategy for data collection whose methods are appropriate to the research question(s). A review of the literature, methodologies, etc. is not considered research (e.g., methodology review rather than application of a methodology) for purposes of the award, except where the literature review is the primary method of collecting data. * The research question focuses on benefits to library users and should be applied and have practical value as opposed to theoretical. * The applicant(s) demonstrate ability to undertake and successfully complete the project. The application provides evidence that sufficient time and resources have been allocated to the effort. Appropriate institutional commitment to the project has been secured. Any ALA member may apply, and the Jury would welcome projects that involve both a practicing librarian and a researcher. Deadline is January 8, 2014. In-Reply-To: <19C21EA2CEDA2147B16CA362FB140ABF17029BB4@Aquarius.cliu.org> Message-ID: I've recently started using Ubiquiti UniFi access points in our libraries. The UniFi APs connect to a central controller server (a vm I'm hosting at our main library) and one of the bonuses is that the controller server collects stats. I can also manage & monitor all our access points through the controller, and I get an email if one of them goes down. The APs don't have all the capabilities that wifi routers usually do, for example they don't do DHCP, so you have to have a DHCP server on the network they're connected to, but so far I am very impressed. ----------------------------------------------------------- Cindy Murdock Ames IT Services Director Meadville Public Library | CCFLS http://meadvillelibrary.org | http://ccfls.org On Tue, Dec 17, 2013 at 8:49 AM, Jim Gilbert(WTPL) < gilbert.j at whitehallpl.org> wrote: > Google Analytics tied to a ?log-in? page through our pfSense portal. > > Analytics handles everything periodically. > > > > Currently the login page requests Card# / E-mail Address / PIN. > > Doesn?t really do anything till we can develop the authentication into > pfSense. > > > > It does give us a page to capture the stats through! > > > > James Gilbert, BS, MLIS > > Systems Librarian > > Whitehall Township Public Library > > 3700 Mechanicsville Road > > Whitehall, PA 18052 > > 610-432-4339 ext: 203 > > > > *From:* Web technologies in libraries [mailto:WEB4LIB at LISTSERV.ND.EDU] *On > Behalf Of *Chadwick, John C. > *Sent:* Monday, December 16, 2013 4:08 PM > *To:* WEB4LIB at LISTSERV.ND.EDU > *Subject:* Re: [WEB4LIB] Collecting Wifi usage statistics? > > > > In my last job we used the Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) and it was > very easy to get usage statistics. But recent breakthroughs have begun to make inroads in solving this ongoing problem. On March 15, 2012, the ISO certified International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) was released to uniquely identify ?Public Identities of parties? ? ?parties? being natural persons, legal entities, and fictional characters. This was followed byORCID (originally the ?Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative?) which on October 16th of that same year began issuing persistent, unique user identifiers that marked the launch of a registry for author identification in science and related academic publishing. On January 14, 2014, NFAIS will hold a 90-minute webinar (11:00am - 12:30pm EST) that will provide an overview of ISNI (an overview of ORCID was given in October 2013). Our featured speaker will be Laura Dawson, Product Manager, Identifiers at Bowker, an affiliated business of ProQuest, who will discuss the following: ? The mission and objectives of ISNI ? The differences between ISNI and ORCID and their interoperability ? The ISNI business model ? What ISNI does and who should use it ? Its benefits to the research and publishing communities ? Current acceptance - who is actually getting and using ISNIs ? The current size of the ISNI database ? ISNI Links and linked data applications ? Issues related to identity presentation and cross-domain linking ? Process of assigning ISNIs and the quality control efforts ? The relationship with the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) ? Future directions If you or your staff want to learn more about this initiative and how it can benefit your organization, register for the NFAIS webinar today. Read ahead if you're interested in some highlights. This was our first full year of offering online classes for librarians' professional development, having started the first classes in October of 2012. In 2013, we passed the 1000 mark in the number of people served, and they registered from a total of 20 countries. There are currently over 80 classes on the books. Our instructors are getting a raise in 2014, to show our appreciation for their work. We have a lot of repeat customers, and as these testimonials show, people have been happy with their educational experiences: http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/testimonials.php 2013 saw the first round of two successful certificate programs: the Certificate in User-Experience and the Certificate in XML and RDF-based Technologies. In 2014 they will be running again, and we will also be introducing two new programs: a Certificate in Library Management, with Deborah Schmidle as the course designer and instructor, and a Certificate in Cataloging, with Scott Piepenburg at the helm. We are excited about these programs and encourage you to read about them on the website. As a spin-off of the certificate program in UX, the instructors for those courses had a small unconference at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, where they all gave presentations on the topics that they each cover. Their presentations were recorded and are publicly available. This conference was useful in making adjustments to the certificate program for next year. Here is a link to the presentations: http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/news/?p=461 In early 2013 we experimented with webinars as an alternative to our usual asynchronous mode of course delivery, and decided not to continue offering webinars. Webinars are inconvenient in their requirement that everybody attend at the same time, and unappealing to many people. It was a useful experiment in that it gave us confidence in continuing to focus on Moodle as our platform for course delivery. 2013 also saw the beginning of successful partnerships with the Metropolitan Library Council of NYC (METRO), the Solo Division of SLA, and the MOBIUS consortium of Missouri. On the publishing side, with Library Juice Press and Litwin Books, 2013 was also a busy year. We attended ALA in Chicago in the summer, and ASIS&T in Montreal in November, and enjoyed talking to many people about our publications. We will be at ALA in Philadelphia in January and in Las Vegas this summer, and look forward to seeing you there. 2013 saw our first book award victory. Our book Greening Libraries, edited by Monika Antonelli and Mark McCullough, won top honors in the Business category of the Green Book Awards. Library Juice Press and Litwin Books debuted our own awards in 2013 as well. This past summer saw the first annual Litwin Books Award for Ongoing Doctoral Dissertation Research in the Philosophy of Information, which went to Steve McKinlay, of Charles Sturt University, New South Wales, Australia. Information about this award is at http://litwinbooks.com/award.php . In the Fall, we gave the first award in the annual Library Juice Paper Contest, which went to Ryan Shaw, for ?Information Organization and the Philosophy of History?, published in JASIST in June 2013. For more information about this award, go to http://libraryjuicepress.com/contest.php . It was a fairly busy year for book publishing as well, in terms of the number of titles published. Library Juice Press released four new titles, and Litwin Books released three. They are as follows: >From Library Juice Press: Information Literacy and Social Justice: Radical Professional Praxis, edited by Shana Higgins and Lua Gregory http://libraryjuicepress.com/ILSJ.php Feminist Pedagogy for Library Instruction, by Maria Accardi http://libraryjuicepress.com/feminist-pedagogy.php Jesse Shera, Librarianship, and Information Science, by H. Curtis Wright http://libraryjuicepress.com/shera.php Lenny and Nina are Buried in Books, by Linda Cooper http://libraryjuicepress.com/lenny-nina.php >From Litwin Books: Feminist and Queer Information Studies Reader, edited by Patrick Keilty and Rebecca Dean http://litwinbooks.com/fqis-reader.php Voltaire's Fanaticism, or Mahomet the Prophet: A New Translation, translated by Hanna Burton http://litwinbooks.com/mahomet.php Import of the Archive: U.S. Colonial Rule of the Philippines and the Making of American Archival History, by Cheryl Beredo http://litwinbooks.com/import-beredo.php We also tried something unprecedented in 2013, which was to make it possible to "join Library Juice" as a member. Membership in Library Juice comes with benefits such as a discount on online classes, DRM-free downloads of titles in our backlist, and participation in an online community. For information on joining Library Juice, go to http://libraryjuice.com/membership.html Finally I want to mention a pet project that is not technically a Library Juice project, but something that I have been working on on the side with an old friend. It is an experiment in community information that allows people to post messages on an electronic sign inside a local business, using their smart phones or computers. The project is described at http://this-sign.net/. Our first digital sign is set up at a local hip, gourmet donut shop called Doughbot, in Sacramento. You can actually access the sign to post your friendly hellos and donut-related messages at http://doughbot.this-sign.net/. We are excited about this experiment and open to ideas about how to develop it for library spaces, among other things. Feel free to contact me if this idea interests you. Thank you for being with us for 2013, and we look forward to working with you in 2014. Best regards, Rory Litwin Library Juice P.O. Previous library mobile usability research has examined tasks users predict they might be likely to perform, but little is known about what users actually do on a mobile-optimized library site. This research used a combination of survey method and web analytics to examine what tasks users actually carry out on a library mobile site. The results indicate that users perform an array of passive and active tasks and do not want content choices to be limited on mobile devices. For decades, the PDF document format has been the fallback for digital content display, despite its shortcomings. But new developments and standards from file formats to improved cascading style sheets, adaptive layouts, graphics scaling, and device recognition are encouraging the move away from PDF, but many challenges remain. When is reflowable text or fixed layout the best approach? Can a user have a common experience regardless of device being used or should the goal be to provide the best experience for the particular device? How can authors and publishers ensure that specialized content such as graphics and tables are not lost or garbled when presented to a smaller screen? Is there an efficient way to produce and distribute content without re-creating it for every different potential device and format? Is it possible to create device-agnostic content? Understanding these issues is critical both for publishers who need to efficiently distribute content and for libraries who will be purchasing this content and ensuring their patrons, with their variety of devices, can access the electronic content they need. This webinar will describe some advances in adaptive publication design and provide a basis for what you can expect for making content device agnostic.
