why does a browser not know the results of a DNS lookup?

Hi,

If a person types an incorrect domain name in an address bar, the browser will prompt him or her to check the network connection.  (It also prompts him or her to check the domain name.) For example, Mozilla Firefox will respond with

*****************************************

 Check the address for typing errors such as
   ww.example.com instead of
   www.example.com

   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
   connection.

   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
   that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Why does the browser not know that the network connection is fine, and simply prompt the person to re-examine the domain name? Does DNS not communicate with HTTP?

Any help with satisfying my curiosity would be much appreciated.
