[snip]. As part of ACRL?s Value of Academic Libraries Initiative, a multiyear project designed to assist academic librarians in demonstrating library value, ACRL joined with three partners ? the Association for Institutional Research, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and the Council of Independent Colleges ? to sponsor two national summits held November 29 ? December 1, 2011. [snip]. The report ? co-authored by Karen Brown, associate professor at Dominican University, and ACRL Senior Strategist for Special Initiatives Kara Malenfant ? summarizes broad themes about the dynamic nature of higher education assessment that emerged from the summits. From these themes, the report presents five recommendations for the library profession: * Increase librarians? understanding of library value and impact in relation to various dimensions of student learning and success. * Articulate and promote the importance of assessment competencies necessary for documenting and communicating library impact on student learning and success. * Create professional development opportunities for librarians to learn how to initiate and design assessment that demonstrates the library?s contributions to advancing institutional mission and strategic goals. * Expand partnerships for assessment activities with higher education constituent groups and related stakeholders. * Integrate the use of existing ACRL resources with library value initiatives. In the three years since the publication of the best-selling ?Information Literacy Meets Library 2.0,? the information environment has changed dramatically, becoming increasingly dominated by the social and the mobile. The new book ?Information Literacy Beyond Library 2.0? picks up the conversation, asking the big questions facing those who teach information literacy: where have we come from, where are we now, and where are we going. Presenting answers from a range of contributors, editors Peter Godwin and Jo Parker divide their book into three distinct sections. Part 1 explores the most recent trends in technology, consumption and literacy, while Part 2 is a resource bank of international case studies that demonstrate the key trends and their effect on information literacy, offering numerous innovative ideas that can be put into practice. Part 3 assesses the impact of these changes on librarians and what skills and knowledge they must acquire to evolve alongside their users. Among the key topics explored are: * The evolution of ?online? into the social Web as mainstream; * How social media tools are used in information literacy; * The impact of mobile devices on information literacy delivery; * Shifting literacies, such as metaliteracy, transliteracy and media literacy, and their effect on information literacy. Anyone charged with developing and delivering information literacy programs, as well as library professionals concerned with library instruction and digital technologies, will find the information in this book stimulating and useful. Godwin is academic liaison librarian at the University of Bedfordshire, UK and Parker is the head of information literacy at the Open University Library, UK. The game sends teams of students in search of answers to clues that orient them to the library?s spaces, collections, and technologies. The activity provides a fun, low-stakes means to promote resources and services critical to academic success and invites students to explore the building and interact with staff, drawing connections between the virtual and physical library. Since Fall 2011, librarians have facilitated over almost 100 scavenger hunts, reaching over 1,700 (primarily ENG 101) students. Feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive, with the most common comment being: ?We want more time to do this!? The project was awarded the 2012 CLS ProQuest Innovation in College Librarianship Award. My short talk will outline our rationale for developing this activity, the way scavenger hunt works, and feedback we have received from faculty and students. - *Before the first Connection: A marketing Campaign for a Law Library?s Mobile Application* Terry Ballard - Assistant Director of Technical Services for Library Systems/ New York Law School, Mendik Library Ballard will detail the activities of a law school library to develop a marketing campaign for their mobile application while waiting for the technology to be completed. This included a URL that automatically detected incoming mobile connections and rerouted them to the correct store, posters that included the URL and QR codes to lead users to the web page, postings in the library blog, bookmarks at the reserve desk emphasizing the renewal function, and a group shot of librarians holding up their cell phones on release day. Ballard will also discuss the multi-dimensional tracking of usage. - *Gimme! The mobile app development project at Scotsdale Public Library* Aimee Fifarek, Library Technologies & Content Sr. Manager and Ann Porter, Community Relations Coordinator, Scottsdale Public Library "Oh good we got the grant! Oh no we got the grant!" That was pretty much our reaction when the LSTA funding came in for our mobile app development project. We knew that we wanted to develop a mobile app for our customers but that's where our knowledge ended. I'll be talking about how we used our consultants (a market research firm and programmer) to develop the Gimme Engine, a book recommendation app. During the process we learned a lot about project management, working with non-library professionals, and integrating existing technologies to make our funding dollar go father. The lessons we learned may be vaulable to those of you who are looking to hired guns to make your mobile dreams come true. - *It Is Time to Look at Your Library's Mobile Website Again* Bohyun Kim, Digital Access Librarian, Florida International University Medical Library A few years ago, creating a mobile web site for your library was one of the top priorities. Now it is time to see if your Mobile Website is keeping up with the rapidly growing and changing Mobile Web. The presentation will discuss the matter of the discoverability of your Mobile Website, note the changes that have been taking place in library mobile web sites slowly but surely, and talk about how library mobile websites may need a few changes in the direction that is in keeping with the changes in the Mobile Web which is outpacing and competing with the Desktop Web. The LITA MCIG is also seeking the suggestions for discussion topics, things you have been working on, plan to work, or want to work on in terms of mobile computing. All suggestions and presentation topics are welcome and will be given consideration for presentation and discussion. -- Bohyun Kim http://bohyunkim.net ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2012-06-08 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Publishers, specifically reference publishers, have needed to meet these demands and have striven to exceed them ? delivering new and innovative ways to access authoritative facts quickly, easily, and accurately. Some now deliver the next step in the research experience ? providing effortless pathways beyond the facts and figures of free resources or standard reference, making the user?s journey into encyclopedias, scholarly works, and journal articles effortless and seamless. These publisher initiatives have the potential to revolutionize the role of reference in the library, and the way reference is used by researchers at every level. Why are traditionally-published reference resources still necessary? What are publishers doing to make them accessible, usable, and discoverable in the library and on the free Web? The three conferences making up the Tech Trifecta week include: * VuFind Summit 2012 (Oct 15th and 16th) -- The follow-up to 2010's 2.0 planning meeting will include detailed discussion of the new release and opportunities to network with other VuFind users. * Code4Lib Mid-Atlantic 2012 (Oct 17th)-- Code4Lib is a volunteer-driven collective of hackers, designers, architects, curators, catalogers, artists and instigators from around the world, who largely work for and with libraries, archives and museums on technology "stuff." The Mid-Atlantic conference is a kick-off for a Philadelphia Area/Tri-State chapter of the organization. * VuStuff III (Oct 18th) -- VuStuff is an annual conference on the intersections between technology and scholarly communication. It takes place every Fall at Villanova University's Falvey Memorial Library. This year's conference, VuStuff III, will seek presentations from regional librarians on technology and scholarly communication in their respective libraries. We hope to foster an ongoing conversation among regional libraries, in order to further the development of technology in service of scholarly communication. If you haven't already signed up for this year's event, I encourage you to do so ASAP as space is once again limited (VuStuff has hit capacity every year it has been held). For details or to register for this year's events, follow the links above or head to: http://vustuff.org/vustuff/tech-trifecta As well, we're still accepting proposals for talks at all three conferences. Those who are interested in presenting can sign up for a speaker's slot at: http://vustuff.org/vustuff/tech-trifecta/submit-a-proposal/ Thank you for your time and we hope to see you the week of October 15th. - Demian ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2012-06-12 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Libraries for Sustainability ? Webinar #3 - Tues. 6/12 2pm-3pm (EST) In this third webinar, we will discuss and share opportunities for engagement in professional library organizations and other groups which might provide a forum for sustainability issues such as discussion groups, task forces, committees and social activities. Share your experiences with tools such as LinkedIn and listservs, organizations such as AASHE, ARL, ACRL, as well as state and regional associations. How can we initiate contact with such groups? Where shall we focus? How do we address the diverse needs of libraries in all sectors: public, academic, school, special and other? Come prepared to discuss and offer ideas for specific recommendations for successful sustainability activities within professional library organizations. There will be the option for a group to convene in another virtual room for an ALA-focused discussion -- in particular, the future of Task Force on the Environment (TFOE). Plans are already underway for a face-to-face social gathering at the upcoming ALA Annual conference to consider how to best advance the sustainability message within our libraries and associations. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced a $9 million package of grants that aim to significantly boost the number of students who attain a high-quality and affordable postsecondary credential. These grants support a range of innovators from within and outside the postsecondary education system who are creating options that fit with the busy lives of today?s students, enabling them to earn a credential with value in the labor market without incurring significant debt. ?We have to challenge ourselves to rethink our longstanding assumptions about postsecondary education in the United States,? said Josh Jarrett, deputy director of Postsecondary Success, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. ?Postsecondary education faces very real challenges in helping more students, particularly low-income students and students of color. Seat capacity is tight, tuition is skyrocketing, completion rates are low, and millions are unqualified for highly skilled jobs. We have to do something differently, and that?s what these investments in breakthrough learning models are about.? The Gates Foundation is announcing grants to several postsecondary initiatives that are fundamentally redesigning how students learn, how they are supported in that process, and how the postsecondary business model works to support affordable student success. [Summary] Learning was transformed at the Boise State University campus when faculty and students began acquiring mobile devices. The library responded to this transformation by being a leader on campus, developing mobile websites for both the library and the university, expanding wireless connectivity within the library, providing instruction using mobile devices, acting as embedded librarians within mobile learning courses, and through the addition of collections that focused on user-driven acquisitions. You will learn about our best practices, lessons learned, and ideas for the future. Those are the most troublesome. What version of Chrome are you using? What version of Windows or other OS? On my Windows 7, with Chrome 19.0.1084.56 m, it displays OK. I believe it comes down to what font ends up being used to display the text. If the browser uses a font that doesn't contain those characters, you get a rectangle or other placeholder. My Chrome displays the surname Slutskaia (diacritics removed for readability) in Calibri. I learned that by highlighting some of the text in the browser, and pasting it (as RTF) into Wordpad. I can use the Charmap utility in Windows to confirm that Calibri contains the character Unicode 0361, Combining Double Inverted Breve. The same thing in IE 9 reveals that it's displaying in Times New Roman, which also works. Note that in the sample shots you posted, the fonts are different between the Chrome and the IE samples. I can't tell what fonts they are, but they're different. Finally, note that the number of included diacritics in Calibri and Times New Roman has increased with later versions of Windows. Bottom line, it's a matter of choosing the right fonts in your style sheets. Almost all Windows fonts use Unicode. Those with "Unicode" in the name tend to have more coverage than others. None that I know of has coverage for all of the latest version of Unicode (see www.unicode.org). This is not a character coding problem. The 0361 is coded correctly. Not that it is also possible to code this as its two halves, FE20 and FE21. These have more font coverage, although both approaches are sanctioned in MARC. Further to my previous post, I looked at XP, and installed the latest Chrome there. It shows boxes where it should show diacritics. Further analysis reveals that: 1) Chrome on XP (mine, at least) is displaying the sample in Arial. I don't know if this is configurable. 2) Charmap on XP reveals that 0361 is missing from Arial, Times New Roman, and Calibri. 3) A search for this character on my XP box (Anzio, our terminal emulator, does this) found the character in the font "DejaVu Sans Mono" at least. Finally, note that even when this diacritic is displayed, it may not be positioned right horizontally. This issue may not be reasonably resolvable on XP. But then I haven't looked at website-served embedded fonts for a while... But what about what they mean for learners? Who is currently succeeding in open learning contexts? What are the missing pieces of the ecosystem ? from discovery, to peer support, to mentoring, to assessment ? that will allow the most severely underserved learners to succeed in this new learning environment? Anya Kamenetz ? senior writer at Fast Company Magazine, and author of two books and two ebooks about the future of education ? discusses who online learning serves, and how. The Electronic Resources and Libraries Conference is soliciting workshops spanning the core areas of ER&L?s focus: ER&L Tracks. The committee will evaluate each proposal on the basis of subject matter, clarity, and timeliness. Proposals should be for original work on topics of potential interest to the ER&L community. More details at the Call for Workshop Proposals page. http://www.electroniclibrarian.com/presenters/call-for-proposals Elizabeth L. We adopted Drupal as our key development platform for exactly that reason. Drupal has great community support, both at the general level and in the library community. You can find library Drupal resources at http://groups.drupal.org/libraries, including links to Leo Robert Klein's very active Drupal4lib mailing list and lists of library-specific modules. Should you need more help, our Los Angeles based company provides Drupal services to the library and non-profit worlds. These free classes are only offered online and they?re wide open to anyone who wants to sign up. Some of the biggest brands in academia have announced impressive MOOC plans, and a few superstar instructors have jumped in with both feet. Skeptics call MOOCs outliers, but most people agree that whatever happens, MOOCs will make an impact on the way we teach both students and adult learners in the future. So what does this trend mean for you, your faculty and your campus? Join our live webinar, hosted by Casey Green of The Campus Computing Project, to participate in a lively discussion on how to take advantage of the MOOC buzz to get your own courses online, right now. Our panel will discuss: * Where do MOOCs fit in the larger online learning ecosystem? * What impact will MOOCs, flipped and hybrid classes have on traditional, synchronous face to face education? * Can the MOOC model help unlock the online teaching potential for every instructor on your campus right now? * How does online instruction and video knowledge fit into the personal learning environment of your existing students? And how will it be captured, distributed and delivered in a post-MOOC world. If you have PHP and MySQL programming experience, Drupal is a very powerful and extensible platform. If you or the person signing off on the project does not have at minimum a good understanding web applications and Linux servers, I would think twice. With poor coding that can lead to out of control memory usage, which will lead to stability issues. Do extensive due diligence when selecting a vendor and make sure your agreement includes some type of SLA otherwise they'll nickel and dime you at any hint of ignorance. If you are looking for a free and open source Intranet, I'd rather look at Alfresco Community Edition. It has a LGPL license, seems more mature and feature rich Intranet solution out of the box which can also integrate AD. As a LLP I'm guessing you're a Law Firm or Accountancy, so you may have regulatory data retention or tracking requirements. You might also need to take that into your consideration. I love it as a Meebo replacement...BUT, there are a couple of issues preventing me from recommending it as a solution (right now): 1. online/offline status updates Currently, users have to refresh their browser screen in order to determine the online/offline status of the person logged into chat. This can be problematic. Users don't really know if librarians are available for chat. 2. changing the background window of the chat widget when user not connected Currently, when users visit our site and see the chat widget, the window has a gray background with a smiley face asking for the user to enter their name. I've asked Zoho folks if it will be possible to 1) customize the background of this window to our liking, and 2) not require users to enter their name in order to chat (especially since it's already anonymous). 3. Zoho chat in beta! I would like to know the future plans for Zoho chat. It's currently in beta and I'm wondering if the service will remain free. Other than this, I think Zoho Chat is a great tool. The desktop and file sharing functionality is very easy to do for both the admin and the patron. I hope they address the first two issues listed above. Ronnie Fields User Services Technology Mgr. In this way, I am asking for tips on tools (software) to keep them in a log/database, which allow us to generate access reports later (eg: monthly), showing, mainly, how many times each resource is being accessed on each period of time. If it also can allow us to know what resource is accessed by each category, it would be better. EZ Proxy can be a valid choice to meet this demand? Thanks in advance for your help. You can resolve one part of the second issue you mentioned, regarding the gray background with a smiley face. If you add the parameter -Title&smiley=false to the end of the iframe src of the code snippet, then the smiley face thankfully disappears. The grayed-out box/name entry field still appear, but at least the face is gone. Found this info here: https://forums.zoho.com/topic/chat-gadget-image If you hear back from the Zoho folks, I'd be interested in what they say. After a quick review, I found that the Raptor is simpler. It is intended only to gather and count authentications (logons) and only report: the total number of authentications, and the number of unique authenticated users. It seems to me that MetricDocs (*) is the choice. Its purpose is to collect access data from different access log files (Voyager, EZ Proxy, COUNTER), and then create consolidated access reports. According to the developers say, it is used to answer "who did / used x?" * http://metridoc.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/documentation/presentations/code4libPresentation.ppt Best regards, Michelangelo Michelangelo Mazzardo Marques Viana | Support and Development Central Library Systems Coordinator. Message-ID: **Please excuse any cross posting.** I wanted to share with you all a blog post I've done concerning a topic I addressed at the NISO update at ALA Annual in Anaheim; "Why and how librarians have to shape the new cloud computing platforms." If you heard the talk at NISO, you can skip this, but if not, I addressed some topics that deeply concern me about the future of librarianship and these new technology platforms and that I strongly feel need to be thought about and discussed by all of you. I hope you'll find the post informative and provocative and of course, would be delighted to hear your thoughts/responses on the lists, by email or on the blog.
