sample social media policies or plans?

The last person who insisted that our organization needed to have social media policy was a trainer from our city's insurance company during a 2-day employment law training earlier this summer. After that training, I was pretty much afraid to do anything. Talk about DIRE. Our city's social media policy is that they don't allow it. When the city HR person who was also at the training expressed surprise that we allowed staff to participate in social media, I said not only did we allow, but sort of expected it. Basic rules: check your spelling, have a voice, and don't be a jerk.

Bill,

While I understand your desire to promote good and effective social media practices, I question the impulse to behind an institution's desire to codify or frame social media practice which is, by definition, grassroots and individualistic. To quote a colleague, "if you want to tell people how to do social media, you're doing it wrong." That said, I am in favor of promoting ideas for effective, novel or creative uses of social media. There seems to be a growing industry emerging around this: http://bit.ly/SXmwoK
