In fact, libraries, in my opinion, have let their concerns about creating access gateways run amok?to the point that our web sites become so bogged down with gateways, they become obstacles to access. Dan Brown did an excellent job of wedding 5 basic principles of design to information architecture which I use as a checklist to evaluate any change to our web design (please don't look at our current site. I'm not sure what you follow or are familiar with, so here are some recent random resources: I just read the book "User Experience (UX) Design for Libraries" which, published this year, is relatively up to date. It's a good jumping-off point for a library redesign project. It's a quick read and it focuses on responsive design. Here's the GoodReads Link (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14905971-user-experience-ux-design-for-l ibraries). IMHO, for your library website to live without major subsequent redesigns for a couple years, your team should really focus on making it future-friendly and responsive - unless you have another strategy for serving-up optimized content to multiple devices (maybe you have an app or a separate mobile site, I don't know). When I told the Alumni Office the cost of access to that one database, I got told "Never Mind". Sue Susan M. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission announced a blueprint to get all schools using digital textbooks in five years. While not mandated, the initiative encouraged schools to make the switch from print to digital materials based on estimated cost-savings and academic improvement?because print textbooks are expensive and digital content can be more personalized. But there are questions as to whether digital textbooks are actually cheaper, especially when factoring in the cost of the devices needed to deliver them, and whether digital content too closely resembles its print counterpart. Given the various devices, publishers, and content formats that have emerged in the education market, school districts are moving toward their digital goals in many different ways. Our guests will discuss their approaches to using digital content and the benefits, challenges, costs, and savings driving their strategy. Presenters: Jay McPhail, director of instructional technology, Riverside Unified school district, Calif. James Ponce, superintendent, McAllen Independent school district, Texas Moderator: Jason Tomassini, staff writer, Education Week An archived version of the event will be available within 24 hours after the original presentation. El profesional de la informaci?n, 2012, July-August, v. 21, n. 4, pp. 419-427. http://dx.doi.org/10.3145/epi.2012.jul.15 Pdf freely downloadable from: http://www.elprofesionaldelainformacion.com/contenidos/2012/julio/15_eng.pdf Abstract We introduce Google Scholar Metrics (GSM), a new bibliometric product of Google that aims at providing the H-index for scientific journals and other information sources. We conduct a critical review of GSM showing its main characteristics and possibilities as a tool for scientific evaluation. We discuss its coverage along with the inclusion of repositories, bibliographic control, and its options for browsing and searching. We conclude that, despite Google Scholar?s value as a source for scientific assessment, GSM is an immature product with many shortcomings, and therefore we advise against its use for evaluation purposes. However, the improvement of these shortcomings would place GSM as a serious competitor to the other existing products for evaluating scientific journals. Keywords Google, Google Scholar, Google Scholar Metrics, Scientific Journals, Repositories, H-Index, Bibliometric Indicators, Scientific Assessment. Please complete the poster proposal abstract template (MSWord template or Adobe PDF template) and submit to ismith at sun.ac.za. What is an Electronic Poster or ePoster? An electronic poster utilises a large monitor and computer to display multimedia versions of a poster. It gives an opportunity for a computer savvy presenter in the poster session to more effectively convey information that would not necessarily be possible with a traditional printed poster. It also enhances visualisation to attract interest of attendees. Electronic posters are intended to provide a display of information that is not possible with a traditional printed poster. Embedding multimedia content, along with static elements, such as titles, logos, and summaries, would be a good way to convey information. Examples of dynamic visual elements include videos, slide shows, animated charts or graphs, scrolling text, or 3D rotation of a model. The intention of an electronic poster does not include attracting visitors to stay for a long oral, video, or slideshow presentation. Display elements can either loop for a minute or less, or be activated and controlled by the poster presenter on command. Remember, you are to interact with those who are interested in your electronic poster, not give a presentation to an audience. Guidelines 1. Please create your electronic poster using MSPowerPoint or OpenOffice presentation software. 2. The electronic poster can consist of 1 to 5 slides. 3. Use animation and multimedia content to enhance your electronic poster. 4. Set the electronic poster up as a slide show, with slide transitions included. 5. It will be your own responsibility to ensure that the electronic poster displays correctly on the day prior to the start of the Conference. All slide shows will be pre-uploaded by the 6th of November 2012. 6. The poster title and your name should be clearly displayed on each slide. 7. No audio speakers will be available. 8. The electronic poster stations will have no connection to the Internet. Therefore please do not embed any items that require Internet connection. 9. After being set up, the electronic poster should be able to loop without any human intervention (e.g. avoid clickable hyperlinks). 10. The final electronic poster will be subject to quality control. Please submit your completed ePoster by 15 October 2012 by e-mailing it to: ismith at sun.ac.za. ePosters are to be displayed throughout each day of the Conference. Chief motivators include the proliferation of digital data and a growing interest in research data and supplemental information as a part of the framework for scholarly communication. Key objectives include not only preservation of scientific research data, but making data accessible to verify research findings and support the reuse and repurposing of data. Metadata figures prominently in these undertakings, and is critical for the success of any data repositories or archiving initiative, hence increased attention to metadata for scientific data -- specifically for metadata standards development and interoperability, data curation and metadata generation processes, data identifiers, name authority control (for scientists), Linked Data, ontology and vocabulary work, and data citation standards. This NISO/DCMI webinar will provide a historical perspective and an overview of current metadata practices for managing scientific data, with examples drawn from operational repositories and community-driven data science initiatives. It will discuss challenges and potential solutions for metadata generation, identifiers, name authority control, Linked Data, and data citation. SPEAKERS Jane Greenberg, professor at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of the SILS Metadata Research Center, is well known for research and writing on topics ranging from automatic metadata creation to metadata best practices, ontology research, Semantic Web, data repositories, thesauri, and scientific data curation. She has served as Principal Investigator or partner on a number of grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Health, and actively participates in organizations such as the American Library Association, American Society for Information Science and Technology, and the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. Jane is the recipient of the 2012 Margaret Mann Citation from the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). Thomas Baker, Chief Information Officer of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, has recently co-chaired the W3C Semantic Web Deployment Working Group and the W3C Incubator Group on Library Linked Data. REGISTRATION Registration is per site (access for one computer) and closes at 12:00 pm Eastern on August 22, 2012. Discounts are available for NISO and DCMI members and students. Furthermore, and especially during the last two years, Linked Open Data has received a lot more attention from the library world. Examples ranging from the Library of Congress' initiative "A Bibliographic Framework for the Digital Age", the Conference of European National Librarians and their vote to support the open licensing of their data, groups like LODLAM, IFLA'S Semantic Web Special Interest Group, to the point of library system vendors and providers discussing and experimenting with Linked Data technology - all these clearly reflect that LOD has gained a lot of momentum in library land. The question today is about how to ensure that LOD won't be a temporary hype but that it will gain ground in the scenery of future infrastructures. SWIB12 will focus on the adaption of Semantic Web approaches in applications for libraries and science. In the last years major efforts have been put into generating LOD datasets from legacy systems and into promoting the LOD approach towards a global and open information space. Upcoming challenges will involve the strategic and technical alignment of catalogues and legacy systems in libraries and the authoring environments for scholarly communication - both in a data and service infrastructure based on the principles of the Semantic Web. De-lurking to ask a question about performance indicators and statistics for research guides and pathfinders. What sort of benchmarks do you use to determine whether a research guide should be weeded from your collection? A couple of years ago, we did a mass cull of the research guides on our website in preparation for a move to LibGuides. While we love the LibGuides platform, our usage stats haven't rebounded the way we thought they would, and we've discovered that the benchmarks we used prior to the conversion don't really work for the guides we migrated to the new platform. A recent report on some of those pilot projects, however, shows that many students find the e-textbooks ?clumsy? and prefer print. The report is based on a survey conducted this spring of students and faculty at five universities where e-textbook projects were coordinated by Internet2, the high-speed networking group. Students praised the e-books for helping them save money but didn?t like reading on electronic devices. Many of them complained that the e-book platform was hard to navigate. In addition, most professors who responded said that they didn?t use the e-books? collaborative features, which include the ability to share notes or create links within the text. The participating universities were Cornell, Indiana University at Bloomington, and the Universities of Minnesota, Virginia, and Wisconsin at Madison. The pilot is the result of a partnership between the institutions, Internet2, McGraw-Hill, and Courseload, an e-book broker. After paying $20,000 each, the participating institutions were provided with the Courseload platform and e-textbooks for up to 1,000 students to use. Each university was individually responsible for training professors and distributing the e-textbooks. The pilot projects are based on a model pioneered at Indiana University in 2009 by Bradley C. Wheeler, the university?s vice president for information technology. The university buys bulk e-textbooks to distribute to students, who pay a mandatory course-materials fee to cover the costs, with the idea that the university can get a much better rate per book by buying in bulk. Do you need new creative art project ideas for your Summer Reading Program or other events? Tired of the same ole, same ole. This is your opportunity to develop a portfolio of ideas that you can use with your Preschool through Teen visitors. This 4 week online workshop is taught by an art professor who has first hand experience developing library art programs. Interact with other Youth Librarians and a real art professor. The online class is open 24/7. Access the online workshop at your convenience. Instructor Valerie Colston, M.A. is an art professor and author with many years of experience developing and teaching art programs as an Art Performer at several San Diego local libraries. She teaches 100 Art Ideas for Teachers at the University of California, Extension in San Diego, California and a variety of Art history courses online through colleges and universities. Her book 200 Projects to Strengthen Your Art Skills published by Barrons Educational Series has received outstanding reviews appearing in School Library Journal, National Art Education Association newsletter, and more. Her "It's Easy to be a Green Teen" appeared in the youth librarian publication Voices of Youth Advocates October 09 issue. Teens Go Green! Tips, Techniques, Tools and Themes for YA Programming. Libraries Unlimited Professional guides for Young Adult Librarians Series 2011 will be released this year. Here's what youth librarians who have taken the class are saying about the workshop: In working on this workshop I have worked also on my Summer Reading Program for our library. Week 3 gave so many ideas to use that it was fun to do them and discover which ones would work well for our young patrons. I now have crafts for at least 2 of the 4 books we will read in my Youth Discussion Group. I am well ahead of the game. I really enjoyed answering the questions about the piece of art in the museum. I want to use some of the questions I learned this summer when we read "Chasing Vermeer" because the book deals with a piece of art. Thanks for all the help with one of my books for the Summer Reading Program. Well, I had not thought about bonding art and books together in one reading hour before, so I got new and interesting views of what to do. Thank you for the wonderful ideas. I had a great time brainstorming ideas and reading the suggestions everyone had! I feel I learned how to study a painting in more depth. That a painting is made up of many facets. The lines, colors and textures all blend together to make one painting. I gained lots of great ideas from everyone. The ideas were great and I will incorporate some of them into my programs. I will keep a copy of the different things I have learned in this session of the class to apply it to painting I encounter. It is exciting. I bookmarked several of the sites presented in the lessons which will come in handy when I get stuck for ideas. It also helps reading the other's experiences in working with library patrons in crafts events. Finding ideas are hard to find and this is a wealth of information for myself and the library. Thank you very much for the wonderful and interesting web-sites, you mentioned. There are so great ideas. I was delighted to find some new web sites for inspiration - many of my students love to draw and I hope to integrate some of the cartoon drawing lessons in to our weekly book club meetings, possibly in the creation of bookmarks, etc. It has been great having so much information all in one place. I enjoyed browsing through the many websites & links. Many are new to me. I appreciate all of your suggestions for organization, supplies, storage, recycling, and art tips & resources. Where do I begin! I have learned about so many resources. I really liked the online scavenger hunt, what a great idea. I also really loved the letter writing with beads. This week gave me a great many resources to use in our library. I really had to think for the scavenger hunt but I love the idea and did work our a hunt. I also thought the "wanted" poster was fun as well . . . There really are a wealth of information and ideas to explore. I would recommend this class to others. After all I took this class because my supervisor recommended it to me. Message-ID: **Please forgive cross-posting** Hi Folks! As you crank to get those last things done before the long holiday weekend (and props to those of you actually working most of this weekend - that's me too :0), I'd like to invite you to do something *fun*. There's an energetic group of smart and talented library, museum and archive evangelists (called #sxswLAM - check us out on the Facebook and the Twitter) who are ready to take the annual South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) Conference by storm to engage the creators of our digital present and future -- and invite them into the overall greatness and awesomeness of libraries. A SXSW talk can really make a difference. I did a library advocacy talk there last year (highlighting our struggles with eBooks and calling the community to action) and it was covered by Time magazine online! The author didn't realize that libraries were in trouble, but now that he knows, he took action (including sharing his story to a huge audience). Score! To help get the library message into this extremely important community, please take a look at the sessions proposed by librarians - (they are gathered here: http://www.sxswlam.info/ ) and vote for the ones you think should make it into the conference! Heck -- just vote for all of them. They are all great! Deadline to vote is this Friday (Aug 31) so as you're doing your own bit to make libraries awesome, you might enjoy taking a minute to support those who want to spread the good news of libraries far and wide. Thanks! Carson PS - My proposed talk this year is targeted at bringing library issues into the mainstream at SXSW - although libraries are not in the title or program description, libraries are a prominent part of my talk. After all, they are places of great convergence *and* great specialization -- and ultimately offer choice to all. Sneaky, eh!? I have no idea if this approach will work or not, but you have to go for broke at SXSW. I've received an interesting question that I'm hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on. Looking at what we do from an ADA compliance point of view, we are required to provide the same information to patrons with disabilities as we are to patrons without disabilities. Specifically, I was asked what libraries do to make QR codes ADA-compliant, i.e. how does a visually impaired or totally blind patron access the same information that a sighted person, using a QR code, can access with their smartphone? I must admit, I am having a hard time figuring out what the issues really are, and I haven't found anything very specific on the web either. I think there are a couple of issues (at least!) with this, and I'm wondering if any libraries out there have addressed this in any way? Presumably if someone has a phone with an app that can read print (i.e. hard copy print such as posters, fliers, handouts), we could put the URL next to the QR code, so that the phone could read it. We should be doing that anyway, in order to provide access for people without smartphones. I don't know if phones are able to detect that there is a QR code nearby and direct a visually impaired patron towards it (?), or if phones that can read physical print items can also detect a QR code within that print page, and decode it and direct the user to a website. If anyone has any thoughts or insights on this, or any experience to share on what their library does, I would be very grateful for your feedback.
