Freak Out, Geek Out, or Seek Out:
Trends, Transformations, and Change in Libraries
We have a choice with technology change - we can freak out about it,
jump in unprepared, or seek out the best tools and trends for our
libraries... and plan for those!
David describes the current social media transformation taking place,
and applies those changes to a library setting. Then David also
discusses the changes a library needs to make to meet and participate in
our new online, participatory world, and provides pointers to plan for
these changes.
David Lee King is the Digital Branch & Services Manager at the Topeka &
Shawnee County Public Library, where he plans, implements, and
experiments with emerging technology trends. He speaks internationally
about emerging trends, website management, digital experience, and
social media, and has been published in many library-related journals.
David was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker for 2008, and
published his first book, Designing the Digital Experience, in 2009. His
second book will be published in 2011. David writes the Wired Library
column in Public Libraries Magazine with Michael Porter, and maintains a
blog at http://www.davidleeking.com
Putting IT back in Reality
Some have likened libraries as museums for information handling in the
industrial age. If only they knew what you were really up to, right?
If technology is shaping learning and literacy, then the evolution of
social media, video games, and an app-for-everything is a sure sign
libraries better get on board the information freight train, onsite and
online. Re-thinking the way we partner and deliver library programs is
the first step.
This presentation will highlight the strong correlation between library
services in the web world and the real world, and how ‘merging’ them
onsite and ‘mirroring’ them online can stimulate new networks and new
audiences for libraries.
Hamish Curry is the Education and Onsite Learning Manager at the State
Library of Victoria. As a teacher with 14 years experience, in the UK,
Japan, and six years coordinating a city campus in Melbourne, he
understands the importance of engagement and creativity in stimulating
learning. In his work at the State Library, information and technology
go hand-in-hand with amazing collections and exhibitions, and an array
of education workshops, online resources and innovative public programs.
Cost: $33 incl GST.
