Bill,

We just completed a review of filtering solutions on behalf of libraries
in our cooperative. There are a lot of solutions out on the market but
the best fit depends on how you need to handle content filtering.

1. Do you want the ability to filter based on a patron profile so that
the filtering level is specific to the patron using the computer? This
would be tied to a computer access management system like SAM or
Envisionware.

2. What level of technical support do you have in-house to support a
solution?

3. Are you willing to look at cloud-based solutions?

4. How limited are your budget resources to invest in a new solution?

I'm attaching the report that was created for the cooperative libraries.
A couple of notes about this report:

A. Our focus was on systems that we know work with SAM and Envisionware
since those are widely used in our libraries.

B. There are a lot of cloud and appliance-based solutions in addition to
the ones that we reviewed. Almost every content filtering and systems
security vendor has or is in the process of rolling out a cloud-based
solution for content filtering. Our report was intended to provide a
framework for decisionmakers to evaluate different solutions and find
the one that best fits the needs of their library. Just because a
particular product isn't on our list doesn't mean it couldn't meet your
needs. We simply couldn't review all the solutions on the market. But
there should be enough information in the report for you to be able to
review other content filtering solutions and see how they match up to
the solutions we recommended.

If you have any questions about the report or content filtering
solutions in general, let me know.

Subject: [Web4lib] Internet Filtering solutions

I have been using Content protect for the last couple of years and it is
now getting to where I have to uninstall the program to update any of my
public computers.

1. Is there anyone having the same problem? Any solutions?

2. What other solutions do you have that I can look into to
replace this software?

Thanks.
