Digital Exhibits vs Collections (was Open Source Digital Archives Displays)

While we're on the topic of digital exhibits:
Is anyone else grappling with finding a graceful unified way to showcase
and manage online exhibits and digital collections?
For us,
Exhibits = curated items representing a larger physical collection, lots
of text, sometimes in tandem with a physical exhibit (think Omeka)
Digital collections = entire collections as-is, usually lots of items,
little to no accompanying text (think CONTENTdm)
We've got two separate special collections and archives departments in two
libraries, a digital collections website, a digital exhibits page and our
ETDs, all in separate silos. We've been trying to envision a single portal
into all of our unique offerings. If y'all have seen good examples of
this, please send along.
Thanks!

Lauren,
Thank you for sharing! It looks like Omeka offers a nice way to display
photographs.
Sincerely,

The State of Nevada’s digital project uses an open source software call
Omeka. UNLV set it up and maintains it on their server. You can view it
at http://omeka.library.unlv.edu/omeka/ The state committee looked at
several alternatives but we like this one the best.

I am in the process of creating a digital display of old photographs for
the archives where I work, and I was wondering if anyone can share some
good experiences with open source software for digital photograph
displays.
